NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Drew Stanton (knee) underwent surgery to clear an infection and may miss the remainder of the season.
The infection was discovered Wednesday, and Stanton immediately underwent surgery. Prior to that, he had been recovering well from his sprained MCL and ACL with an eye on returning for the Wild Card Round of the playoffs. The Cardinals will be forced to ride Ryan Lindley as a far as he can take them, which will likely be one-and-done in the postseason. It's a shame for an 11-4 team. Dec 26 - 11:06 AM

Drew Stanton (knee) did not practice Wednesday.

The Cardinals are hoping Stanton can get in some limited work later in the week. Coach Bruce Arians said there's an 85 percent chance he'll be back for the playoffs. Logan Thomas will start in the regular-season finale.

Coach Bruce Arians said there's a 85 percent chance Drew Stanton (knee) is back for the playoffs.

It's gotten so bad in Arizona that they're on Stanton Watch, desperate for the sub-average backup to heal up. Logan Thomas will start in Week 17 at San Francisco, with Ryan Lindley ready to come in if things go awry. Even if the Cardinals beat the Niners, they'll be playing in a Wild Card game the following week unless the Seahawks lose to the Rams at home.
Dec 24 - 9:18 AM

Drew Stanton (knee) is expected to practice "some" in Week 17, but won't start against the 49ers.

The Cardinals have already announced they'll be going with rookie Logan Thomas for the regular-season finale. Their aim with Stanton is getting him ready for the Wild Card round. The early signs suggest he will be able to go.
Dec 22 - 3:23 PM

Drew Stanton (knee) is inactive for Sunday night's Week 16 game against Seattle.

Ryan Lindley will start, with Logan Thomas backing him up. The rest of the Cardinals inactives are WR Brittan Golden, S Chris Clemons, OG Jonathan Cooper, NT Alameda Ta'amu, OL Anthony Steen, and DE Kareem Martin.
Dec 21 - 7:03 PM

Cardinals coach Bruce Arians suggested Friday that Drew Stanton (knee, doubtful) could be active for Sunday's game versus Seattle to serve as Ryan Lindley's backup.

Arians confirmed Lindley will start. Stanton is dealing with ACL and MCL sprains in his knee, but the Cardinals obviously have very little confidence in rookie Logan Thomas. We still don't see any scenario where Stanton plays.
Dec 19 - 2:39 PM

Drew Stanton (sprained ACL, MCL) "did nothing" during the portion of practice that is open to the media Friday.

The Cardinals listed Stanton as "limited" in Thursday's practice, but there's no way he's playing on Sunday Night Football. Perhaps the Cards were trying to create the illusion he might start ahead of a division game versus Seattle.
Dec 19 - 1:32 PM

Cardinals QB Drew Stanton (sprained ACL, MCL) returned to practice Thursday, getting in a limited session.

It's an eye-brow raiser, but there's still little reason to believe Stanton will be ready to return just 10 days after spraining his knee. The Cardinals are likely just trying to confuse the situation for the Seahawks. It is a sign, however, that Week 17 could be a realistic possibility. Stanton's status will be updated on Friday, but we fully expect Ryan Lindley to be under center for Week 16.
Dec 18 - 7:19 PM

Appearing on Sunday NFL Countdown, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported Drew Stanton (knee) is likely to miss four weeks.

Stanton has sprained ACL and MCLs, which means they're partially torn. The four-week timetable would put Stanton back for the Divisional Round of the playoffs. Arizona desperately needs to win the NFC West and clinch a first-round bye, though we don't believe the talent gap between Stanton and Ryan Lindley is as great as some are making it out to be. Both players are very mediocre.
Dec 14 - 12:42 PM

The Cardinals are calling Drew Stanton "week to week" with sprains of his ACL and MCL.

He's essentially out indefinitely, and perhaps could return in the playoffs, though we wouldn't count on Arizona making it far enough for Stanton to play in January. The Cardinals' quarterback situation will remain murky entering a Week 16 date with Seattle. Ryan Lindley is the tentative favorite to start.
Dec 12 - 1:08 PM

Mike Jurecki of FOX Sports 910 reports Drew Stanton suffered a sprained ACL and Grade 2 MCL sprain in Thursday night's Week 15 game against the Rams.

It could be worse, but it sounds to us like Stanton's season is over, though that could change depending on how far Arizona advances in the playoffs. Heck, Philip Rivers played with a torn ACL a few years ago. Ryan Lindley sits atop the depth chart for the Cardinals, with Logan Thomas No. 2. Expect the Cardinals to add another quarterback to the roster by Monday. Thomas isn't ready for the NFL.
Dec 12 - 12:39 PM

Drew Stanton (knee) will undergo an MRI on Friday.

Whereas it was immediately apparent that Carson Palmer's knee injury was serious, the Cardinals apparently aren't sure what they've got in Stanton's. They also aren't sure if they'll be going with third-year pro Ryan Lindley or fourth-round rookie Logan Thomas if Stanton is out for Week 16. Coach Bruce Arians said Lindley's "experience" was the deciding factor in going with him on Thursday evening. Whoever starts will be getting thrown to the wolves vs. Seattle.
Dec 12 - 12:54 AM

Drew Stanton was forced from Arizona's Week 15 game against the Rams with a right-knee injury, and will not return.

Stanton could put no weight on his leg before being carted to the locker room. It's possible his season is in doubt. Stanton was replaced by recent practice-squad signee Ryan Lindley, and not fourth-round rookie Logan Thomas. Stanton was struggling mightily before departing, completing just 12-of-20 passes for 109 yards. Stanton was routinely throwing behind his pass catchers, often hanging them out to dry against the Rams' ferocious defense.
Dec 11 - 10:29 PM

Drew Stanton completed 15-of-30 passes for 239 yards and a touchdown Week 14 against the Chiefs.

It was not pretty, but Stanton did enough to get the job done against the Chiefs. He was helped by a surprisingly strong run game led by Kerwynn Williams. Stanton at least looked composed against the Chiefs, and he may have enough to limp the Cardinals into the playoffs. He is not worth a look as a fantasy quarterback.
Dec 7 - 7:15 PM

Coach Bruce Arians remains committed to Drew Stanton as his starting quarterback.

Arians doesn't really have a choice, as rookie Logan Thomas isn't ready and Ryan Lindley isn't any better than Stanton. The Cardinals have managed just 27 points in three games with Stanton since Carson Palmer tore his ACL. They've lost two straight and host Kansas City in Week 14. It's hard not to feel bad for the Cardinals, as they're in danger of blowing the division and potentially missing the playoffs altogether after a 9-1 start to the season.
