Drew Stanton will be Carson Palmer's backup this season.
Stanton was poised to finally get his shot as an NFL starter until the Cardinals swung the trade for Palmer. Now he'll revert back to his familiar clipboard-holding role. Stanton has started just four games in his six-year career. Wed, Apr 3, 2013 10:16:00 AM

According to the Associated Press, there's "no doubt" the Cardinals are leaning toward Drew Stanton as their 2013 starting quarterback.

On Wednesday, coach Bruce Arians insisted his team doesn't need to hunt for a quarterback. "We already found one," he said. Arians' faith in Stanton appears real and not a smokescreen. Stanton knows the system after spending last year as Andrew Luck's backup, and has good arm strength and athleticism. "I have all the confidence in the world with him being our starter," Arians said. Stanton remains unlikely to be viewed as Arizona's long-term quarterback solution. We do expect him to open the 2013 season as the starter.

Coach Bruce Arians said he intends to name a starting quarterback early in the offseason.

Arians said he wants competition throughout his roster, but not at the quarterback position. That's good news for Drew Stanton, who already knows Arians' scheme and is considered the leader in the clubhouse. His main competition will come from Brian Hoyer and a possible draft pick, although Arians claims he won't be drafting for need in April.

When asked if he thinks his starting quarterback is currently on the roster, coach Bruce Arians said the Cardinals have a "very capable one" in Drew Stanton.

"Drew knows the offense, he is more than capable of doing it," said Arians. "If he is our guy, I am comfortable." Arians stopped well short of guaranteeing Stanton the job, but he's the heavy favorite to lead Arizona's offense onto the field in Week 1. We still fully expect a camp battle between Stanton, Brian Hoyer, and a high- to mid-round pick. John Skelton and/or Ryan Lindley may be on the outs.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on Total Access Friday that the Cardinals are unlikely to draft a quarterback at No. 7 overall.

Arizona at No. 7 is the popular landing spot for West Virginia's Geno Smith in mock drafts. "What I do hear from the Cardinals, it's unlikely that they would draft a quarterback in the first round," Rapoport reported. "So it looks like going into the 2013 season, it's gonna be (Brian) Hoyer versus (Drew) Stanton." The Cards also have John Skelton and Ryan Lindley on the roster, and they could both be placed on the trade block. If Arizona is going to move the ball on offense in 2013, they'll need some serious Bruce Arians magic.

New Cardinals QB Drew Stanton was promised a chance to compete for the starting job.

Stanton went to the right place to play. Kevin Kolb will be released if he can't work out a contract renegotiation, John Skelton/Ryan Lindley have repeatedly faceplanted and Brian Hoyer is just as unproven. Stanton knows Bruce Arians' offense well after watching Andrew Luck operate it all last season.

Cardinals signed QB Drew Stanton to a three-year contract.

29-year-old Stanton immediately becomes the favorite to start at quarterback in Arizona, although that'll be subject to change. Stanton learned Bruce Arians' offense in Indianapolis last season, holding the clipboard for Andrew Luck. Stanton is 2-2 in his career as a starter with a 5:9 TD-to-INT ratio. He possesses plenty of arm strength and plus-yardage scrambling ability, but has scattershot accuracy and is not a long-term solution.

Free agent Drew Stanton will visit the Cardinals.

He's "en route" to Phoenix. Stanton would be joining a quarterback stew in Arizona, and would have to win a camp battle to earn the starting job. For free agent QBs looking for a legit path to playing time, Arizona is by far the best bet.

The Bucs have reportedly reached out to free agent quarterbacks Drew Stanton and Chase Daniel.

The Bucs are in the market for an upgrade on current backup Dan Orlovsky. Stanton and Daniel are two buzzworthy prospects, but could be looking for a better shot at a starting gig. Neither would truly push Josh Freeman.

Citing a league source, the Palm Beach Post echoes a Tony Pauline report that the Cardinals may pursue Drew Stanton in free agency.

Stanton knows new coach Bruce Arians' offense after backing up Andrew Luck in 2012, and could be an adequate backup with a decent combination of arm strength and athleticism. We don't think he'd be a realistic candidate to start.

NFL draft insider Tony Pauline says free agent QB Drew Stanton could be a "hot commodity" on the open market.

Pauline says the Colts will try to re-sign Stanton as Andrew Luck's backup, but if it doesn't happen, "keep an eye on" the Vikings and Cardinals. The National Football Post's Dan Pompei said earlier in the month that there were "some rumblings" Stanton, 28, could follow Bruce Arians to Arizona in hopes of competing for the starting job.

The National Football Post's Dan Pompei says there are "some rumblings" that impending free agent QB Drew Stanton could follow Bruce Arians to Arizona.

Pompei says Arians was impressed with Stanton's practice habits and preseason work as Andrew Luck's backup. Stanton's knowledge of Arians' offense is another big plus as the Cardinals attempt to solve their passing woes. Stanton is still only 28, but he'd likely be no better than Arizona's No. 2 quarterback.

Drew Stanton revealed that he signed with the Jets in March because he was given assurance that he would receive playing time if Mark Sanchez played poorly.

Following the Jets' trade for Tim Tebow, Stanton was dealt to the Colts five days later. The team's promise to Stanton is further reason to believe that Sanchez will be pulled in favor of Tim Tebow if his play doesn't pick up in a lost season.

Colts acquired QB Drew Stanton and a 2012 seventh-round pick from the Jets in exchange for a 2012 sixth-round pick.

Stanton joins Trevor Vittatoe as the lone two quarterbacks on the Colts' offseason roster. That will change in five weeks, of course. The Jets were lucky to get anything for Stanton after it became clear he'd be elsewhere following the addition of Tim Tebow. Stanton, 28 in May, is an athletic signal caller lacking accuracy and passing technique. He's not a natural thrower of the football. He is a competitive quarterback with a strong arm, however, and went 2-1 as a spot starter for the Lions in 2010. He'll likely be Andrew Luck's backup in Indianapolis.

The Associated Press reports the Jets are now trying to trade QB Drew Stanton after acquiring Tim Tebow from the Broncos.

Stanton just a signed a reasonable one-year, $1.25 million deal. The Jets have to hope that a team in need of a quality backup, such as the Rams, Raiders or Packers prefers Stanton to the mediocre veteran options still available. The best they can hope for is a late-round pick. Stanton chose the Jets over the Bucs and Chiefs, who went on to sign Dan Orlovsky and Brady Quinn respectively.
