NFL suspended Redskins FS Brandon Meriweather two games for violating the league's player-safety policy.
One of the league's dirtiest players, Meriweather laid an illegal hit on Torrey Smith in Saturday's preseason game. The league notes that it was his "sixth violation of player-safety rules." Meriweather drew a one-game ban in 2013. The Redskins have one of the league's thinnest safety corps, so it's a major concern. That being said, Meriweather rarely makes an impact beyond his reckless hits. He was Pro Football Focus' No. 77 safety in 2013. Aug 25 - 5:56 PM

Redskins re-signed FS Brandon Meriweather to a one-year contract.

Meriweather, 30, made 13 starts for the Skins last year, recording 69 tackles, two interceptions, and a forced fumble. He graded out 77th among 86 qualifiers in Pro Football Focus' safety ratings. New Redskins nickel back Tracy Porter came in 105th among 110 corners, per PFF. PFF had LCB DeAngelo Hall as its No. 84 corner, and RCB David Amerson tied with Hall for 84th. The Redskins had better hope Pro Football Focus' 2013 ratings aren't predictive.

ESPN.com's John Keim "wouldn’t be surprised" if the Redskins re-signed SS Brandon Meriweather.

Per Keim, the Redskins don't view any of the current free-agent safeties as better than Meriweather and could bring him back as a veteran to compete with second-year SS Phillip Thomas. Washington also hasn't ruled out re-signing Reed Doughty to provide depth.

ESPN Redskins reporter John Keim reports the team hasn't shown much interest in re-signing free agent SS Brandon Meriweather.

It's hard to imagine the Redskins wanting Meriweather back after he continuously was flagged for illegal hits. In addition to breaking the rules, Meriweather isn't a very good safety. Washington is potentially in the market for two starting safeties, depending on how it feels about second-year S Phillip Thomas. Meriweather shouldn't find more than one-year deals on the open market.

In a radio interview, free agent SS Brandon Meriweather said he "really would love to be back" in Washington.

Meriweather better hope the Redskins feel the same way. Meriweather showed zero remorse after being suspended one game in 2013 for repeatedly hitting opposing players with the crown of his helmet. In fact, his solution to the problem was, "I just got to take people's knees out." To top it off, Meriweather is not even a good NFL safety. He should find a soft market this offseason. Meriweather is our No. 25 free agent safety.

NFL reduced Redskins SS Brandon Meriweather's two-game suspension to one game for illegal hits.

The NFL is never going to teach these players lessons if they keep reducing suspensions. Meriweather is simply lucky he hasn't been suspended indefinitely at this point. He's constantly hitting opposing offensive players with the crown of his helmet. Meriweather will be eligible to return in Week 9. Some combination of Bacarri Rambo, Trenton Robinson, Jose Gumbs, and Jordan Pugh will handle safety duties for the Redskins against the Broncos this weekend. Peyton Manning is locked in as the top quarterback for Week 8.

Redskins SS Brandon Meriweather has appealed his two-game suspension.

Meriweather was suspended two games for "repeated violations" of the league's on-field policy, which is the stiffest suspension handed down by the NFL this season against a player for an illegal hit. The Washington Post reports that there will be an expedited hearing for his appeal, with a decision likely coming before Sunday’s game.

NFL suspended Redskins SS Brandon Meriweather two games for illegal hits.

One of the dirtiest players in football -- and not a very good safety, at that -- Meriweather has racked up seemingly countless fines over the years for violating on-field policy. The NFL had enough when Meriweather drew two more penalties for personal fouls in Week 7 against the Bears. Meriweather is eligible to return in Week 10. The Skins are extremely thin at safety again with Reed Doughty nursing a concussion and Phillip Thomas out for the year.

The NFL will suspend Redskins SS Brandon Meriweather for one or two games.

Meriweather was flagged for two clear-cut personal fouls in Sunday's win over the Bears, adding to his well-deserved reputation as a head-hunter. The NFL is still mulling the length of the ban, but this one should stick on appeal. Meriweather's long history of fines has obviously done nothing to change his playing style. With Reed Doughty battling a concussion, the Redskins are getting thin at safety.

Redskins SS Brandon Meriweather was flagged for two more personal fouls in Sunday's Week 7 win over the Bears.

Meriweather's reputation as a head-hunter is only going to be enhanced. He was fined $50,000 for a 2010 hit, got $45,000 in fines in 2011 and was slapped for $42,000 in Week 2 of this season. Brandon Marshall is calling for Meriweather to be suspended this time. "I feel every hit I took was a legal hit," he said. "I wasn't trying to be dirty. I wasn't trying to hurt nobody. I didn't lead with, lunge with my head. I used my shoulders like they told me to do." Expect a suspension.

Redskins SS Brandon Meriweather (concussion) is practicing this week.

Meriweather knocked Eddie Lacy out of the game with a helmet-to-helmet hit before dishing out another one to James Starks. Meriweather took the worst of the second one. It's pretty surprising he's out on the practice field so quickly after lying motionless on the field for several moments Sunday afternoon.

Redskins SS Brandon Meriweather was forced from Sunday's game against the Packers with a concussion, and will not return.

Meriweather lay motionless for several moments before walking to the locker room under his own power. Reed Doughty is in the game at strong safety after E.J. Biggers got destroyed in Meriweather's absence in Week 1. Meriweather will likely be facing a hefty fine.

Redskins SS Brandon Meriweather (knee, groin) is probable for Week 2.

Meriweather missed Monday night’s season-opening loss with a groin injury. He'll immediately regain his starting role from converted CB E.J. Biggers and won't be limited after returning to a full week of practice.

Redskins SS Brandon Meriweather (knee, groin) is practicing in full for Week 2.

Barring a setback, he'll start on Sunday against the Packers. Converted CB E.J. Biggers filled in for Meriweather in Week 1, grading out near the bottom of Pro Football Focus' safety ratings.
