Free agent TE Matt Spaeth visited the Bengals on Friday.

Spaeth was just released by the Bears on Wednesday. The blocking tight end has 49 career catches in six seasons.
Mar 15 - 4:25 PM

Bears released TE Matt Spaeth.

It's a move that could be seen coming from a mile away after the Bears signed Martellus Bennett. Spaeth had a $500,000 roster bonus due on Thursday. A pure blocker with just 49 catches in six years, Spaeth's market will be slow developing.
Mar 13 - 1:06 PM

Bears TE Matt Spaeth will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery Friday.

Spaeth said the clean-up is "no big deal" and that he would "be good to go in no time" for offseason workouts. The Bears will look to upgrade at the position this offseason. Spaeth's roster spot is in jeopardy with a new coaching staff coming in.
Jan 11 - 8:56 AM

Bears TE Matt Spaeth's roster spot is in question this offseason.

A blocking specialist likely brought in at former OC Mike Martz's behest, Spaeth no longer fits the offense. His $1.875 million salary can be used to re-sign Kellen Davis or make a push for a free agent such as Martellus Bennett.

Matt Spaeth had two receptions for 13 yards and a touchdown in the Bears' Week 9 win.

This marks just his second touchdown on the year, so no he's not auditioning for a Scott Chandler-type role in Chicago. He has just five catches and 28 yards on the year.

The Bears plan to use new TE Matt Spaeth as a sixth lineman in jumbo packages.

They'll expect zero receiving production at tight end this year. "Now we can block defensive ends with tight ends," said position coach Mike DeBord. "We can pass protect. It helps all the way around, short yardage, goal line." Spaeth is drawing comparisons to ex-Bear Jim Covert, who was an offensive tackle.

Bears agreed to terms with TE Matt Spaeth, formerly of the Steelers.

A decent blocker with no after-the-catch ability, Spaeth never developed as the Steelers had hoped. He'll likely be limited to a blocking duties under coordinator Mike Martz. The Bears now have Greg Olsen, Brandon Manumaleuna, Kellen Davis, and Spaeth on the roster. This signing does nothing to quiet the Olsen trade talk.

Steelers reserve TE Matt Spaeth caught three passes for 27 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's loss to the Jets.

With Heath Miller (concussion) sidelined, Speath played every snap. He even was targeted in the back of the end zone on the game's second-to-last play, but the ball was batted down at the last second. Spaeth is mainly a blocker, so leave him on waivers even if Miller sits out next week.

Steelers TE Matt Spaeth (concussion) has been cleared to return to action.

It's good timing with Heath Miller now out. Spaeth will start in Miller's place this weekend against a Bengals defense that's allowed the 20th-most fantasy points to tight ends. Look elsewhere for your fantasy needs.

Coach Mike Tomlin revealed that backup TE Matt Spaeth sustained a concussion in Week 11.

Along with rookie WR/KR Antonio Brown (knee), Heath Miller's backup will be questionable for Sunday's game at Buffalo.

Steelers re-signed restricted free agent TE Matt Spaeth to a one-year, $1.101 million contract.

Spaeth hasn't quite developed as the Steelers had hoped when they drafted him in the third round in 2007. He's not on Heath Miller's level as a blocker, and his after-the-catch skills are practically non-existent. He'll back up Miller again in 2010.

The Steelers have assigned an original pick tender to restricted free agent TE Matt Spaeth.

He's available for a third-round pick. Spaeth has been buried behind every-down TE Heath Miller for three seasons, but has flashed soft hands, red-zone ability, and adequate blocking skills. His career YPC is an ugly 7.2, though.

Steelers TE Matt Spaeth (wrist) is listed as questionable for Week 12.

Spaeth will likely be a game-time decision on Thursday night. But his fantasy outlook is back in the gutter with Heath Miller (ankle) set to return.
Wed, Nov 19, 2008 02:57:00 PM

Matt Spaeth caught six balls for 55 yards in the Steelers' Week 11 win.

Spaeth started slow with just one first-half target, but was force fed by Ben Roethlisberger underneath and over the middle in the third and fourth quarters. He finished with seven passes directed his way, but Spaeth will return to the bench with Heath Miller (ankle) due back in Week 12.
