Packers waived DL Justin Harrell.
Now 27, Harrell is coming off a torn ACL after missing the majority of the 2007-2009 seasons with back injuries. He's played just 14 of a possible 64 games since GM Ted Thompson selected him at No. 16 overall out of Tennessee. Harrell is a poor bet to land guaranteed money on the open market. Packers DL Justin Harrell received no indications from the team that Green Bay wants him back for this season.

Entering his fifth season, Harrell has racked up more year-ending injuries than big plays in the NFL. "It's up to them. I don't know," he said. "I didn't have any talks at the end of the year like, 'You'll be back.'" Now 27, Harrell is coming off a torn left ACL. He'd have little market value if released.

The Green Bay Press-Gazette doesn't expect DE Justin Harrell back with the Packers this season.

One of GM Ted Thompson's few draft misses, the injury-plagued 2007 first-rounder is due a $575,000 roster bonus this offseason. He spent all of last season on I.R. with a torn ACL, allowing C.J. Wilson, Howard Green and Jarius Wynn to emerge as capable rotational ends.

Packers placed DE Justin Harrell (torn ACL) on injured reserve, ending his season.

As expected, Jarius Wynn took his spot. Harrell, who has now missed 35 of 48 games since being drafted with the 16th overall pick in 2007, is under contract through 2012. He's no lock to start next season on the active roster.

Packers DE Justin Harrell is out for the season with a torn ACL.

It's a tough break for Harrell, but no one should be surprised. He played in just 13 of 48 possible games coming into this year due to a laundry list of injuries. The Packers will place Harrell on I.R. by Tuesday, and probably bring in a free agent defensive end. Jarius Wynn is a good bet to return.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy confirmed Sunday that DE Justin Harrell's knee injury is "significant."

Beat writer Greg Bedard takes this to mean it's a season-threatening injury, and the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports it's "believed" to be a torn ACL. Harrell, Green Bay's No. 4 defensive end, is one of the most injury-prone players in the game. The Packers may explore re-signing Jarius Wynn.

Justin Harrell left Sunday's game against the Eagles with a serious left knee injury.

The injury looked pretty serious as coach Mike McCarthy came out on the field to check on Harrell. The talented defensive end can't seem to stay healthy after dealing with back issues for much of his career.
Sun, Sep 12, 2010 05:03:00 PM

Coach Mike McCarthy said that Justin Harrell was excused for personal reasons Thursday and not because of his troublesome back.

The Packers failed to mention that Harrell's wife had a baby yesterday when they noted he had back tightness. McCarthy said Harrell is fine and would have been able to practice today.

Packers DE Justin Harrell sat out both practices Tuesday due to tightness in his back.

We don't normally worry about guys taking a day off, but Harrell has a long history of back issues. It's a major red flag if the former first-round pick's back is acting up again. Harrell has had a healthy -- albeit mediocre -- camp until now.

Packers DE Justin Harrell has reportedly shown poor effort on the practice field in camp.

Either that, or he's out of shape. "The contrast in intensity between Harrell and rookie Mike Neal is startling," writes the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel's Bob McGinn. "By now, (Harrell's) routine has become commonplace. Take a rep, slow jog or walk behind the line, remove helmet, take a knee."

Packers DL Justin Harrell had to leave Monday's practice early for unspecified reasons.

Surprise. A teammate said Harrell was suffering from fatigue and heat-related symptoms. He still wasn't in the locker room an hour after practice, and later one of the team's equipment attendants gathered Harrell's clothes from his locker and left. An injury wouldn't be new for Harrell. He's in a fight to win a roster spot, so this comes at a bad time for him.

Packers DL Justin Harrell is expected to be on the roster bubble even if he stays healthy.

His never-ending back injuries have frustrated the Packers, and the recent switch of B.J. Raji to nose tackle has created more depth at defensive end. Harrell currently appears to be sixth on the depth chart at end, behind Cullen Jenkins, Ryan Pickett, rookie Mike Neal, Johnny Jolly, and Jairus Wynn. Harrell may have to show versatility at nose tackle to make the club.

Justin Harrell (back) returned to practice for the start of Tuesday's OTAs.

Harrell missed the entire 2009 season with back injuries that derailed his career. Coach Mike McCarthy believes that Harrell has finally "turned the corner," however. If so, he'll contribute as a rotational lineman this year.
Tue, May 18, 2010 04:14:00 PM

Packers DE Justin Harrell did not have further back surgery this offseason and is "feeling really good."

Chronic back issues have decimated Harrell's career. He's played in just 13 of a possible 48 games, and the fact that he feels good now doesn't mean too much. If he's healthy in the fall, he'll be a rotational lineman.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy says the team feels DE Justin Harrell has "turned the corner" with regard to his chronic back injuries.

Harrell, the No. 16 overall pick in 2007, has appeared in just 13 games over the last three seasons. If healthy, he could contribute as a rotational run stopper off the bench. Harrell has never offered penetration skills.
