Free agent QB John Beck will participate in Saints rookie minicamp.

Beck, a former second-round pick of the Dolphins, spent part of last season with the Texans. The 31-year-old hasn't appeared in a game since starting three games for the Redskins in 2011. He has seven career starts, "leading" his team to an 0-7 record in those contests. Beck has a 3-to-7 TD:INT ratio.

Texans released QB John Beck.

The Texans needed Beck's roster spot so they could secure some secondary depth in the form of Troy Nolan. They'll roll with only T.J. Yates behind starter Matt Schaub for now. They also have rookie Case Keenum on the practice squad.

Texans declared QB John Beck, WR DeVier Posey, CB Roc Carmichael, CB Brandon Harris, ILB Tim Dobbins, OT Andrew Gardner and OG Brandon Brooks inactive for Week 3 against the Broncos.

There are no surprise inactives for the Texans, who remain one of the healthiest teams in the league heading into Week 3. A core special teamer, Dobbins is dealing with a hamstring injury. A third-round pick, Posey has been a healthy scratch three straight weeks.

Texans agreed to terms with QB John Beck, formerly of the Redskins.

It's an obvious fit because Gary Kubiak's offense is so similar to the Shanahans', but the Texans had better be wary of Beck's cunning. He's an excellent practice player who goes deer-in-the-headlights when the bullets become live. A (nearly) 31-year-old checkdown machine, Beck appeared in four games last season (three starts), and completed 60.6 percent of his passes with a 6.5 YPA, two touchdowns, and four interceptions. Beck shouldn't be a realistic candidate to unseat T.J. Yates for Matt Schaub's primary backup role.

Redskins released QB John Beck.

A Mike Shanahan favorite, Beck became expendable when the Redskins drafted Robert Griffin III on Thursday and Kurt Cousins this morning. Now 30 years old, he's probably seen his last NFL start, but could garner some attention as a backup. In four appearances last season, Beck completed 60-of-132 passes for 858 yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions. He continues to be hampered by poor pocket presence and check-down tendencies.

John Beck believes he'll get another opportunity to be a starting quarterback.

"I feel without a doubt I can be a better quarterback," Beck said in a recent radio interview. "And (coach Mike Shanahan said after the season), 'I know you can too, but right now we're in this situation. There'll be another opportunity down the road and you just got to make sure you're ready for it.' So, there's where my mindset is at. I believe there will be another opportunity." We don't share Beck's optimism heading into his age-31 campaign. If Beck gets into a game next season, something will have gone wrong for the Redskins.

SI's Peter King believes "someone not on the roster now" will be the Redskins' starting quarterback in 2012.

Rex Grossman is a free agent, while John Beck is under contract for $1 million in 2012. Facing what is likely a do-or-die season, coach Mike Shanahan will almost certainly take a quarterback with Washington's first-round pick, or make a play for someone like Green Bay's Matt Flynn. Washington has been flimsily connected to both Flynn and Texas A&M QB Ryan Tannehill in recent days.

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan confirmed Wednesday that John Beck would play in Week 17 only if Rex Grossman got injured.

"We play to win," said Shanahan. Once the Shanahans' pet project, Beck failed miserably in four appearances (three starts) this year, throwing two touchdown passes compared to five turnovers. Due a $1 million salary in 2012, Beck will likely return as no better than the Redskins' No. 2 quarterback next season.

"Three people with knowledge of the situation" tell the Washington Post that John Beck and Rex Grossman split first-team snaps in Redskins practice this week.

Beck has not played well since replacing Grossman, taking a team-record 10 sacks in Week 8 before failing to complete a pass longer than 17 yards in Week 9. It would still be surprising if he was given the hook this quickly. Beck is averaging "just" 1.3 turnovers per appearance compared to 2.2 for Grossman, and has posted similar passing numbers. The situation is clearly one to avoid in two-QB leagues, but barring implosion, it's unlikely Beck is benched against the Dolphins.

None of John Beck's 47 pass attempts traveled farther than 16 yards in the air in Sunday's loss.

Of Beck's 30 completions, just 11 went for 10 yards or longer. Beck simply isn't capable of challenging downfield, and though coach Mike Shanahan has endorsed him as his starter for at least one more week, it would not be surprising if Rex Grossman finds himself back under center before season's end. Beck is barely even worth stashing as a reserve in two-QB leagues.

Following Sunday's ugly loss to the 49ers, Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said he will stick with John Beck as his starting quarterback.

In Beck's two starts, the Redskins have scored a total of 11 points. Today, he completed 30-of-47 passes for 254 yards with one touchdown and one interception. However, just like last week, the majority of those yards and completions came when the game was already decided. Beck looks remarkably uncomfortable in the pocket and consistently fails to find the open man. He simply checks down to his backs whenever he can. As a third-string talent, we have no hope that Beck will turn this brutal offense around. If the Redskins had anyone other than Rex Grossman in reserve, Beck's job would be in jeopardy.

Redskins OC Kyle Shanahan has put a lot of the blame for John Beck's nine Week 8 sacks on the quarterback.

"We did have quick throws, we just didn't get rid of them," Shanahan said. "John's got to recognize that and get rid of the ball. He can't hold onto it when we're outnumbered ... He's got to learn to get rid of the ball." It's worth noting because Beck had the same problem in five rookie-year starts with the Dolphins.

John Beck completed 20-of-33 passes for 208 yards, no touchdowns, and two interceptions in the Redskins' Week 8 loss to the Bills.

He took an unthinkable nine sacks to lose 56 yards, and all told was hit on 14 occasions. Needless to say, Beck is going to be quite sore on Monday, and a lot of it is on him. Beck's happy feet have returned, and he often looks like a deer in the headlights in the pocket. Someone needs to tell him to get rid of the football when no one is open and the pass rush is closing in. An even uglier performance may be ahead against a far, far better 49ers defense in Week 9.
Sun, Oct 30, 2011 07:29:00 PM

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said Monday that he was "really proud" of John Beck's performance against the Panthers in Week 7.

Beck went 22-of-37 for 217 yards, one touchdown, and an interception, complemented by a short rushing score. "That’s what he’s got to do," Shanahan said. "He made some plays with his feet, threw on the run, thought he handled himself well in the drop-back situation. Our goal now is to get a supporting cast around him that can play at a very high level." The "goal" just got a lot tougher with Santana Moss (hand) out for the next 5-7 games.
