Former Bucs OG Arron Sears was released Tuesday after 62 days in jail on a charge of battery on a law enforcement officer.
The officer involved opted not to pursue charges, recognizing that Sears would be best served by entering an 18-month mental health pretrial intervention program. If Sears successfully completes the much-needed program, the charges will be dropped. Tue, Apr 5, 2011 05:27:00 PM

Former Bucs OG Arron Sears, in jail for the past 34 days, has a hearing Thursday to determine if he will receive psychiatric help after assaulting a law enforcement officer.

He needs it, and the assistant state attorney acknowledges that it's "not always about sending people prison" if they're mentally unstable. Police have made 11 visits to Sears' home in the past nine months, including once when Sears referred to himself as "God." In a short stay at a mental hospital Sears "demanded a beer and a black and mild (cigar)," threatening that the "place is going to blow" when he was denied. Sears is now indigent, and his NFL career is over at age 26.

A former top-35 overall pick and 31-game starter for the Bucs in 2007 and 2008, Sears' career is in doubt after he sat out all of last year due to a mental disorder. He has a place in the league if he wants to keep playing.

Bucs GM Mark Dominik is optimistic that OG Arron Sears (personal issues) can be a contributor going forward.

"Aaron has been here, he's been in camp, showing up here working out," Dominik said. "The hope is he can continue to work out and get himself into shape. He's got an entire offseason to see what he can do." When in shape and his head's on straight, Sears can be a dominating interior run blocker.

Bucs GM Mark Domenik said it's "wishful thinking" to say OG Aaron Sears will contribute this season.

Sears has been medically cleared to practice, but he's out of shape. Still, Sears' return gives the team something to look forward to in 2010, even if it's just their mauling offensive guard's likely return to the lineup.
