Chiefs signed S Sabby Piscitelli, formerly of the Browns.
Piscitelli struggles in coverage and as a tackler in run support, but he did have eight special teams stops last year. That should be his role on the Chiefs. Thu, Aug 4, 2011 04:18:00 PM

Free agent SS Sabby Piscitelli received a restricted tender from the Browns before the lockout began.

However, Piscitelli says his plan is to "definitely (go) the free agent route" and test the market. A former second-round pick, the 28-year-old to be has long struggled in both coverage and as a tackler, and couldn't get on the field defensively in Cleveland after being claimed off waivers from Tampa Bay last December. He did finish the year with eight special teams stops.

The agent for Sabby Piscitelli revealed that the Bucs had tried to trade the safety before the October trade deadline.

It wasn't just because the Bucs were disappointment in Piscitelli's attitude and his level of play. Piscitelli had "grown disgruntled" in Tampa and requested a new start elsewhere. In addition to the Browns, the Jaguars also put in a waiver request on Piscitelli this week.

Browns claimed S Sabby Piscitelli off waivers from the Bucs.

The 64th overall pick in the '07 draft, Piscitelli flamed out in Tampa Bay after struggling mightily in both pass defense and run support. The Browns will apparently give him a look on special teams in the last five games.

Buccaneers waived S Sabby Piscitelli.

It speaks to how far the 2007 second-rounder had fallen that he was released just one day after the team discovered that FS Cody Grimm's season is over. Piscitelli showed poor ball skills and even worse intangibles in his 2+ seasons. Safety Vince Anderson was promoted from the practice squad to back up new starter Corey Lynch. Piscitelli will have to earn another shot as a special teamer in another locale.

The Bucs are expected to choose between Sabby Piscitelli, Corey Lynch and Cody Grimm for their now vacant free safety job.

Tanard Jackson is suspended for at least one year after repeatedly violating the league's Substance Abuse Policy. The sad part is that Piscitelli, who lost his job in training camp and was almost cut, may be their best option. Grimm, a seventh-round pick, has also shown promise.

Bucs S Sabby Piscitelli sustained a concussion in Saturday's game against the Jaguars.

Piscitelli was beaten out for the starting strong safety job by Sean Jones, and he may now be fighting for a roster spot. The concussion won't help matters.

Bucs coach Raheem Morris went off on Sabby Piscitelli one day after the safety suggested he wasn't given a fair shake in his competition with Sean Jones.

"I don't have to [justify the move], and that's unfortunate for him," Morris said. "That's probably why he didn't get it." Asked about Piscitelli being unhappy, Morris replied, "His job is to make us happy ... that's how the NFL works." Piscitelli was among the NFL leaders in missed tackles last year while also struggling mightily in coverage.

A day after losing his starting job to Sean Jones, SS Sabby Piscitelli is now in danger of not making the Bucs' 53-man roster.

"Guy's seats are all always on fire. There is always somebody ready to play and replace you," said DBs coach Jimmy Lake. The Bucs are definitely going to keep rookie Cody Grimm, so Piscitelli will have to beat out Corey Lynch.
Tue, Aug 24, 2010 05:17:00 PM

The Bucs are convinced that Sabby Piscitelli is best suited as a No. 3 safety -- not a starter.

All it took was one year of blown coverage assignments, missed tackles, and no big plays for this to become obvious. Piscitelli has surrendered his first-team status to Sean Jones. Jones will be a big upgrade in run defense.

Bucs GM Mark Dominik indicated Sabby Piscitelli is not out of the running for the starting strong safety spot.

Dominik is pushing hard, though, to acquire a veteran to compete with or push Piscitelli after a disappointing season. If the Bucs succeed in signing Sean Jones, Piscitelli would likely be pushed into a reserve role, which is a better fit.

The Bucs are expected to find a replacement for SS Sabby Piscitelli this offseason.

And no, bringing back Jermaine Phillips again isn't a solution. Piscitelli didn't approach expectations as a playmaker or run stuffer and was exploited in coverage. He figures to resume focusing on special teams next season.
Wed, Jan 6, 2010 10:19:00 AM

New starting SS Sabby Piscitelli says coordinator Jim Bates' scheme will allow the Bucs' safeties to be more aggressive and make more big plays.

"This is a playmaking scheme," he said. "I think we're going to have a lot more interceptions." Moving away from Cover 2, Piscitelli and FS Tanard Jackson will roam more instead of having to cover opposite sides of the field.
Thu, May 28, 2009 11:15:00 AM

The Bucs are committed to starting Sabby Piscitelli at strong safety this season.

He offers more coverage ability than incumbent Jermaine Phillips, who's moved to linebacker. Piscitelli will be a high-upside but risky IDP pick. The Bucs could always put Phillips back at safety if Piscitelli struggles early on.

Buccaneers S Sabby Piscitelli (elbow) returned to full participation in Thursday's practice.

Piscitelli missed the Week 5 game against the Broncos, but he'll play this week.
