Coach Marc Trestman confirmed Jordan Palmer will enter camp as the Bears' No. 2 quarterback.
The Bears' backup quarterback position is more notable than other backup QB jobs because of Chicago's weaponry, Jay Cutler's injury history, and Trestman's history of maximizing signal-caller play. Palmer will open camp as the No. 2, but will be pushed hard by Jimmy Clausen. The loser of that battle will likely lose his roster spot, with rookie David Fales sticking around as the No. 3. Bears GM Phil Emery reiterated that he believes Jordan Palmer can be the team's No. 2 quarterback.

"Absolutely," Emery said. "I told him that the other day -- looking forward to your contributions and we're counting on you." Emery added that he doesn't expect to use a late-round pick on a developmental quarterback. Palmer only has to hold off Jerrod Johnson for backup duties behind Jay Cutler. He hasn't appeared in a regular season game since 2010, but spent last year in Chicago and knows Marc Trestman's system. Even if the Bears don't draft a QB, a free-agent signing can't be ruled out. Cutler has missed 12 games the last three seasons.

Bears GM Phil Emery said he was comfortable with QB Jordan Palmer as Jay Cutler's backup but would seriously look at adding a quarterback in the draft.

Palmer spent all of last season in quarterback whisperer Marc Trestman's system, but the Bears could afford to improve. They have already brought in several veteran quarterbacks for workouts this offseason and are likely to bring in more. A late-round pick on a developmental quarterback could also make sense.

Bears re-signed QB Jordan Palmer to a one-year contract.

Carson's younger brother hasn't appeared in a regular season NFL game since 2010 with the Bengals. The 30-year-old did spend all of last year in Marc Trestman's system, and will be a candidate to be Jay Cutler's primary 2014 backup if Josh McCown bolts in free agency. Palmer has a strong but erratic arm.
Mar 9 - 9:54 PM

Free agent QB Jordan Palmer is the quarterback coach at EXOS, a pre-draft training center, and has been working with UCF's Blake Bortles and others six days a week.

Bortles is the most notable name, but also in attendance are Wyoming's Brett Smith and Washington's Keith Price. Palmer has also worked with San Jose State's David Fales. Palmer, who was with the Bears the final two months of last season, designed a playbook and is putting in six-hour days with the prospects. It sounds like the soon-to-be 30-year-old may have a future in coaching.

Bears agreed to terms with QB Jordan Palmer.

Carson's younger, wilder brother was with the Bears in training camp. Chicago is signing him up to back up Josh McCown with Jay Cutler (groin) potentially staring at an extended absence. Cutler will have an MRI on Monday.

Bears released QB Jordan Palmer and S Tom Nelson, waived WR Josh Lenz.

A camp body, Palmer made it two weeks on the roster. He isn't practice-squad eligible. Already 29, time is running out for Carson's little brother. Lenz is an undrafted free agent out of Iowa State. He has 4.37 wheels.

Bears signed QB Jordan Palmer, formerly of the Jaguars.

29-year-old Jordan is the younger brother of Carson Palmer. A 2007 sixth-round pick out of UTEP, Palmer has plenty of arm strength but has always thrown with extremely erratic accuracy. He'll be a camp arm until September cuts.

Jaguars signed QB Jordan Palmer.

Palmer has been on the street since getting waived at final cuts by the Jags. Carson's brother is back now thanks to Blaine Gabbert's season-ending forearm and shoulder injuries. He'll caddy for Chad Henne.

Jaguars waived or released QB Jordan Palmer, TE Colin Cloherty, RB Richard Murphy, CB Trumaine McBride, DE Odrick Ray, OT Will Robinson, OT Lee Barbiasz, DB Rod Issac and LB J.K. Schaffer.

Palmer's release leaves the Jags with only Chad Henne behind second-year starter Blaine Gabbert. Carson's brother, Palmer has attempted just 15 career passes since entering the league as a sixth-round pick in 2007.

Jaguars signed QB Jordan Palmer, formerly of the Bengals.

Palmer — Carson's brother — was invited to the Jaguars' rookie minicamp on a tryout basis, but showed enough to earn a contract. A 2007 sixth-round pick, Palmer has attempted only 15 career passes, 12 of which came in 2008. He'll compete for the Jaguars' third-string job.

The Jaguars invited free agent QB Jordan Palmer to their upcoming minicamp on a tryout basis.

A Florida Times-Union story claims Palmer was signed, but he's only trying out. Also at the minicamp on a tryout basis is former West Virginia QB Jarrett Brown.

Bengals waived QB Jordan Palmer.

The writing was on the wall after Carson's little brother failed to appear in Cincinnati's past two preseason games. A sixth-round pick of the Redskins in 2007, Palmer has attempted just 15 career passes, two of which were intercepted and zero of which have gone for scores. Dan LeFevour will serve as the Bengals' third-string quarterback behind Andy Dalton and Bruce Gradkowski.

Bengals QB Jordan Palmer hasn't played in either of the team's last two preseason games.

Carson's little brother has been idle since completing just 1-of-4 passes for seven yards and an interception against Lions backups in the exhibition opener. He won't beat out Dan LeFevour for Cincinnati's third-string QB job.

According to WCPO-TV's Dennis Janson, Carson Palmer has told a friend that he thinks the Bengals are toying with his brother, Jordan.

Carson believes the Bengals are giving Jordan hardly any reps now and will cut him when it's too late to latch on elsewhere. What Carson really needs to realize is that his brother isn't anywhere near a starting-caliber NFL quarterback. He's No. 3 on the Bengals' depth chart and this is how third-string quarterbacks are often treated.
