Selvin Young was reportedly waived Thursday because he has a herniated disc in his back.

Young is out until "September at the earliest," so no one is going to claim him off waivers. The Texans would've been an interesting fit, although they heed a short-yardage back and that's not one of Young's strengths.

Broncos waived RB Selvin Young.

Young was a favorite of Mike Shanahan, but he hasn't been able to stay healthy since high school. With Knowshon Moreno already added to a crowded backfield, he was deemed extraneous after failing a recent physical. Young's best bet is to catch on with a team needing a change-of-pace back, but even then his chances of fantasy value are slim. It wouldn't surprise us if Ryan Torain is the next to go.

The Broncos are reportedly asking around to see if teams are interested in acquiring one of their running backs.

They recently signed Correll Buckhalter, LaMont Jordan, and J.J. Arrington, with Selvin Young, Ryan Torain, and Peyton Hillis already on the roster. Neither Young nor Torain would bring much, if anything, in return.

Selvin Young appears unlikely to be on the Broncos' opening-day roster following the additions of J.J. Arrington and Correll Buckhalter.

Young was a product of Mike Shanahan's zone-blocking system and battled injuries all last season. He could be released shortly if the Broncos can't get a late-round pick for him via trade. Young is currently recovering from a ruptured disk in his neck. It's uncertain if he needed surgery.

The Broncos will know in about a month if the ruptured disk in Selvin Young's neck will require surgery.

"Hopefully, the disk will go back into position where he won't have to have an operation," coach Mike Shanahan said. Young has certainly earned himself the "injury prone" label this season, and the Broncos could be reluctant to rely on him next year, even as a backup.

Broncos placed RBs Selvin Young (ruptured disc in neck) and P.J. Pope (torn hamstring) on injured reserve, ending their seasons.

They're the sixth and seventh backs to be placed on Denver's I.R. list in 2008. Young couldn't beat out Michael Pittman at the beginning of the year and was injured almost all season. He is under contract for the minimum in 2009, but the Broncos are sure to upgrade their backfield and Young isn't guaranteed a spot on the roster. He's injury prone and not all that talented.

Selvin Young left Sunday's loss to Buffalo with a pinched nerve in his neck.

Young's long-term stock decreases with every little injury he suffers. Clearly, the Broncos never could have trusted him to be a 20-touch per game back. Young had only seven carries for 16 yards Sunday and is probably out of the ball-carrying mix as long as P.J. Pope (hamstring) is healthy.

The Denver Post suggests that Selvin Young's playing time in the final two games could be affected after he fumbled in Week 15.

Coach Mike Shanahan can't stand fumbling, and while Young was rusty after missing seven of the previous eight games, he wasn't very productive either. He barely managed 3.0 yards per carry. Tatum Bell started against Carolina and the Broncos used a three-headed monster with P.J. Pope also involved.

Selvin Young was held to 19 yards on six carries against the Panthers in his Week 15 return.

Young was splitting snaps evenly with Tatum Bell and P.J. Pope until an awful fumble just before halftime gave the Panthers a gift-wrapped field goal. With P.J. Pope favored in the passing game, Young may not have a significant role going forward.

Other Broncos inactives: WR Chad Jackson, S Marlon McCree, FB Andrew Pinnock, FB/LB Spencer Larsen, G Pat Murray, and DE Tim Crowder.

Young was listed as probable last week too and didn't play, so he's no lock to face Carolina. He'll be worked out in warmups before the Broncos decide his status. If Young is active, he might see 8-10 touches.

If he puts in another full practice on Friday, expect Young to be out there against the Panthers. However, the Broncos say he isn't in full football shape yet after missing over eight weeks. He's not a fantasy option.

According to the Denver Post, Selvin Young "is expected back" from his groin injury Sunday against the Panthers.

We've heard this before, and coach Mike Shanahan sounded less sure in his post-practice presser Wednesday. The Post expects a rotation of Young, Cory Boyd, and Tatum Bell against Carolina's below-average run defense.

Selvin Young (groin) was limited in Broncos practice Wednesday.

He's questionable again this week, but coach Mike Shanahan is optimistic. "He feels like he can go," Shanny said. "He got some reps today (in practice). Limited reps." Young has not received a carry in a game since Week 10.
