Panthers agreed to terms with S Kevin Payne, formerly of the Rams.
Payne spent last year out of football while rehabbing a preseason knee injury. The 27-year-old strong safety offers some special teams value and was highly thought of by small-school scouting services coming out of Louisiana-Monroe. He'll push for the third safety role behind Sherrod Martin and Charles Godfrey. Tue, Jul 26, 2011 11:25:00 AM

Rams placed S Kevin Payne (knee) on injured reserve, ending his season.

Payne is eligible for free agency in 2011, so he may wind up never playing a snap for St. Louis. Acquired in April for a conditional seventh-round pick, the Bears won't get the selection now that Payne failed to make the roster.

Rams S Kevin Payne is out 4-6 weeks with a knee injury.

It's likely an MCL sprain, or perhaps a PCL tear. Either way, Payne and James Butler's injuries have locked in Craig Dahl as the club's starting strong safety.

Rams acquired S Kevin Payne from the Bears in exchange for a conditional seventh-round pick in 2011.

Chicago gets the seventh-rounder if Payne makes the Rams' 2010 roster. Payne, 26, racked up 88 tackles, four picks, and seven pass breakups as a 16-game starter in 2008, but fell out of favor last year for unknown reasons. When on the field, he was a liability in 2009. Payne has experience at both strong and free safety, though his strong suit is "in the box." He'll compete for playing time with James Butler, David Roach, and Craig Dahl. The move may also indicate that the Rams don't plan to retain unsigned RFA O.J. Atogwe.

Kevin Payne is expected to be "the odd man out" at safety after the Bears' trade for Chris Harris.

Beat writer Brad Biggs suspects Payne may ask for his release. The Bears now have seven safeties on the roster, and they won't carry all of them. Al Afalava, Danieal Manning, and Craig Steltz are expected to move into reserve roles. Josh Bullocks will be on the roster bubble.

Bears starting SS Kevin Payne (ankle) will miss Monday night's game against the Vikings.

With Payne out of the lineup and fellow starting safety Al Afalava (knee) listed as questionable, the Bears may be forced to start Craig Steltz and Josh Bullocks against Brett Favre and Co. The Bears rank 7th in the league against the pass, but with both safeties in doubt, Favre is a solid play.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Kevin Payne will probably keep his job as the Bears' starting strong safety.

Payne has battled injuries throughout his career and needs to prove he can stay on the field. Veteran Josh Bullocks and a couple others are also in the mix, but assuming Payne wins the strong safety job he's a nice IDP play.

Bears SS Kevin Payne has been medically cleared for OTAs after undergoing winter shoulder surgery.

He recovered ahead of schedule. Payne is entering his second year as a starter and emerging as a serious IDP contributor. He finished second among Bears DBs in tackles (88) and led them in picks (4) last season.

As expected, SS Kevin Payne started the Bears' opener.

Brandon McGowan is basically a slot corner now as the new nickel back. It's uncertain if Payne will be a three-down safety, but he is a starter.

Kevin Payne has a chance to be the Bears' starting strong safety this year.

Danieal Manning has lost his nickel back job and Chicago could move usual SS Brandon McGowan there. More will be known in the exhibition finale, but the Bears may lean towards a rotation at both positions to start the year.

Bears S Kevin Payne is fully healed from a broken arm and working out at the team's training facility.

Payne broke his arm on a tackle in Week 4 of his rookie season. He probably won't be more than a reserve safety, but could have a significant role on special teams.

Bears S Kevin Payne suffered a fractured arm in the team's Week 4 loss to the Lions. He will be placed on injured reserve, ending his season.

Payne, a fifth-round pick from Louisiana-Monroe, started the game with Danieal Manning moving to cornerback. The Bears will now likely consider signing rookie Josh Gattis from the practice squad to add depth.

Bears DB Kevin Payne left Sunday's game with an arm injury. His return is questionable.

Another blow for a secondary that had already lost its four starters.

Bears signed fifth-round safety Kevin Payne to a four-year, $1.185 million contract. The deal includes a $150,000 signing bonus.

No team is better at getting its picks locked up than Chicago. A Louisiana-Monroe product, Payne is highly versatile (he was the Warhawks' starting punter as a senior) and figures to be a reliable force on special teams.
