Raiders released/failed physical S Hiram Eugene.
Eugene, 31, was due a $2.25 million base salary. The Raiders are slashing costs, and Eugene still wasn't fully recovered after missing all of last season with a dislocated hip. Eugene is primarily a special teamer, so he'd been vastly overpaid by the old Oakland regime. The Raiders still have to make a decision on the future of Kamerion Wimbley's $11 million base salary. Raiders placed S Hiram Eugene on injured reserve with a dislocated hip, ending his season.

Eugene, who suffered the injury in the preseason opener, needed surgery in mid-August. A staple on special teams, Eugene racked up a whopping 18 tackles in kickoff and punt coverage in just 12 appearances last season.

Raiders S Hiram Eugene has undergone surgery on his dislocated hip.

That should close the book on his season, though Eugene has yet to be placed on I.R. Eugene's loss is a blow to Oakland's special teams. They'll be fine at safety with Stevie Brown and Mike Mitchell behind Tyvon Branch and Michael Huff.

Raiders backup S Hiram Eugene suffered a dislocated hip in Thursday's preseason opener.

According to beat writer Jerry McDonald, it sounds like a season-ending injury. Eugene became a strict backup when Michael Huff was re-signed in free agency.

Raiders S Hiram Eugene was carted off the field with a undisclosed leg injury in Thursday's preseason opener.

Eugene needed assistance to get onto the cart, so this could be a serious injury. The 30-year-old had been pushed back into a reserve role behind Stevie Brown and Michael Huff.

Raiders signed S Hiram Eugene to a four-year, $10.25 million contract before last week's transaction deadline.

To nobody's surprise, the Raiders are overpaying for another defensive player. Eugene's deal suggests the team is prepared to move him into the starting lineup at free safety with Michael Huff set to cash in on the open market, possibly with the Cowboys. Eugene does have starting experience, but he's major downgrade from the level that Huff played at last season.

Raiders re-signed restricted free agent S Hiram Eugene to a one-year, $1.759 million contract.

The Raiders will overpay Eugene to back up at safety and contribute on special teams after he lost his starting job to Michael Huff last season.

The Raiders have extended a second-round tender to restricted free agent S Hiram Eugene.

Chalk up another surprise during an already head-scratching offseason for Oakland. While Eugene could be a useful special teamer for many clubs, he started just four games last year, losing his job to Michael Huff. Eugene won't be pursued on the RFA market, but he's not a $1.75 million player.

Raiders FS Hiram Eugene will miss Sunday's game with an unspecified leg injury.

Michael Huff, who has already intercepted three passes as the deep safety in the nickel package, will fill in as the full-time free safety.

Beat writer Jerry McDonald says incumbent FS Hiram Eugene will have to hold off rookie Mike Mitchell to keep a starting job.

Mitchell is apparently viewed as a free safety, despite playing the strong side in college. The Raiders consider their safeties' "interchangeable," though, and Mitchell would likely play closer to the line of scrimmage if he beats out Eugene, with the speedier Tyvon Branch mostly covering center field.

Raiders restricted free agent S Hiram Eugene signed his one-year, $1.01 million tender.

Eugene won the free safety job from 2006 first-round bust Michael Huff last season and is slated to start again in 2009.

Raiders re-signed exclusive rights free agent S Hiram Eugene.

Eugene picked up starts after Stu Schweigert was benched late in 2007 and finished with 31 tackles. With Gibril Wilson in town to play strong safety and Michael Huff at free, Eugene will battle Schweigert for third safety duties.

Hiram Eugene has overtaken Stuart Schweigert as the Raiders' starting free safety.

It's not been a good year for Schweigert, who may not be back with Oakland next season. Eugene has only 12 tackles in the Raiders' last three games and won't be much of a shallow IDP league option playing center field.
