The Boston Herald believes free agent DE Andre Carter could re-sign with the Patriots.

Carter hasn't generated any interest in free agency and would be strictly a depth signing. The Patriots also haven't ruled out bringing back free agents Austin Collie, Matt Mulligan, and Will Svitek.

Carter, 34, will add to a veteran presence to a Patriots defense that lost Vince Wilfork and Jerod Mayo to season-ending injuries. He should see playing time as a rotational pass rusher in sub-packages if active this week. Carter appeared washed up after he was cut by the Raiders during the preseason. He had 10 sacks in 14 games with New England in 2011.

The Patriots are likely just updating their emergency list, as Carter appeared washed up last season, and couldn't make the lowly Raiders out of camp even though he was only due $1 million. It's Carter's first known workout since he was released.

That might just about do it for Carter, who was due only $1 million. The 12-year veteran appeared used up last season, making just 2.5 sacks in 12 games after tallying 10 in 2011 for the Patriots. The fact that he couldn't make the worst team in the league — and perhaps the worst group of pass-rushers this side of New Orleans — bodes extremely poorly for Carter's future. Perhaps Carter would be rejuvenated by landing back in a winning situation, but there's a chance he's simply done.

Raiders agreed to terms with DE Andre Carter to a one-year contract.

Carter appeared in 12 games as a rotational pass-rushing specialist for the Raiders last year, recording just 19 tackles and 2.5 sacks. Now entering his age-34 season, there's little reason to expect a bounce-back campaign even if he ends up starting at right end. The Raiders badly need to add more to a pitiful pass rush that ranked 31st in the league in sacks a year ago.

Head coach Dennis Allen confirmed that Andre Carter will be active for Week 6 against the Falcons.

Carter was inactive in Week 4 after signing with Oakland, but he will be part of the rotation with Lamarr Houston and Matt Shaughnessy against Atlanta. The Raiders rank dead last in the league with just three sacks this season, so they badly need Carter to put some pressure on the quarterback.

Carter was inactive for his Raiders debut Sunday, but apparently healthy enough to play. "He hasn't been in camp with anybody, so we just felt like the right thing to do was to give him this week (off)," coach Dennis Allen said. Updating a previous item, DE Andre Carter signed injury waivers on his quad and back upon his signing with the Raiders on Wednesday.

Carter's quad is reportedly not quite back to 100 percent after tearing the muscle off of the bone in Week 14 last year. He hasn't dealt with any known back issues since the 2004 season, though. He'll likely be a part-time pass-rushing specialist as he starts out his Oakland tenure.

Provided he's finally 100 percent recovered from the torn quad that prematurely ended his 2011 and limited him all offseason, Carter should help goose a pass rush that's generated only three sacks in three games. He'll likely start off in a part-time role. Carter notched 10 sacks in 14 games for the Patriots last season before going down.

Carter is "not close to being ready to play," according to Howe. The Raiders and Rams have shown interest in Carter in recent days, but neither team has signed him. At age 33, it's fair to wonder if Carter will regain his early-2011 form.
