Seahawks DT Brandon Mebane (calf) is listed as probable for Week 5.
Mebane was back on the practice field Friday after sitting out on Thursday. "Mebane made it back," Carroll said. "He's in good shape." There was concern because Mebane had missed four games in 2010 because of a calf injury and one game in 2009. Sat, Oct 6, 2012 12:24:00 PM

Brandon Mebane has moved over to nose tackle for this season.

NFL teams have been moving away from mammoth nose tackles toward quicker penetrators over the past couple of seasons. Mebane's position switch and Alan Branch's positive play factored into the decision to release Colin Cole, who wasn't close to returning from ankle surgery.

Seahawks re-signed DT Brandon Mebane.

The Seahawks held off a late pursuit from the Rams and reported interest from the Broncos to keep their top run-stuffer. With NT Colin Cole coming off ankle surgery, it was even more of a priority to retain Mebane. In Pete Carroll's system, Mebane won't be asked to rush the passer, but he's still a highly effective player.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch confirms the Rams have made an offer to free agent DT Brandon Mebane.

Beat writer Jim Thomas concedes the Rams are not considered the front-runner, though. Seahawks receiver Mike Williams hinted earlier in the day via Twitter that Mebane was returning to Seattle, though we've seen nothing official.

ESPN's John Clayton thinks the Seahawks will retain free agent DT Brandon Mebane.

Mebane surprisingly hasn't generated much buzz this week despite being one of the best run-stuffers out there. The Seahawks' only competition appears to the Broncos. Perhaps the defensive tackle market has just been slow to develop as we haven't heard a peep about top free agent Aubrayo Franklin yet.

According to Danny O'Neil of the Seattle Times, the Seahawks have now made re-signing DT Brandon Mebane their "No. 1 priority" in free agency.

We haven't heard much movement on the Mebane front since a number of reports on interested teams trickled out late last night. Mebane was a top-notch run stuffer in Pete Carroll's defense last year, even if his sack numbers were down. The Broncos are believed to be Seattle's main competition. The Rams have sniffed around the situation, but don't seem willing to pay up.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch concedes that it "doesn't appear likely" free agent DT Brandon Mebane will sign with the Rams.

The Rams are said to be concentrating on defense, but the Broncos and Seahawks have been more aggressive on Mebane. The 26-year-old is expected to get "expensive" before deciding on a team.

The Rams have reportedly joined the hunt for free agent DT Brandon Mebane.

They have competition from the Broncos, Seahawks, and perhaps the Saints. The Denver Post confirms the talks are serious, and Mebane is expected to get expensive by the end of the day. The Broncos lost out on Tony McDaniels to the Dolphins.

The Seahawks reportedly have competition from the Broncos and Saints for free agent DT Brandon Mebane.

ESPN's John Clayton says the Broncos are "trying to get Mebane out of Seattle," so they appear to be the more aggressive of the two suitors. The Seahawks are fighting hard to keep Mebane.

The Seahawks are turning their attention to re-signing free agent DT Brandon Mebane now that the quarterback situation has been addressed.

Mebane's agent indicated that his "most in-depth conversations" Tuesday have been with the Seahawks. Mebane lives in the area, and he's expected to return as long as he receives a competitive offer.

Eric Williams of the Tacoma News Tribune now believes the Seahawks will re-sign DT Brandon Mebane.

Danny O'Neil of the Seattle Times also believes Mebane will be a priority with Colin Cole and Red Bryant both coming off surgeries. Mebane is expected to draw a ton of interested around the league, so the Seahawks will have to come strong with their initial offer.

ESPN NFC North blogger Kevin Seifert considers free agent DT Brandon Mebane a legitimate target for the Bears in free agency.

After the drafting of Stephen Paea and the position switch for Henry Melton, Mebane would seem to be a fallback option if a deal can't be reached with Anthony Armstrong. Bears VP of player personnel Tim Ruskell drafted Mebane in Seattle, and new DL coach Mike Phair has spent the past six years with the Seahawks. Mebane is expected to draw plenty of interest on the market.

After failing to reach a long-term deal prior to the lockout, free agent DT Brandon Mebane no longer believes he'll be back in Seattle for the 2011 season.

"I feel like I wasn't in their plans," said Mebane. "And I feel like I have the right to think that because I got a third-round tender. If they really wanted me, they had plenty of time to do what they had to do." Mebane has a good point, and he's likely to draw plenty of interest at the third-round level. Potential landing spots include Denver, Tennessee, Cleveland, Chicago, and Carolina.

Seahawks GM John Schneider conceded that there is more "urgency" to re-sign free agent DT Brandon Mebane after missing out on an impact defensive lineman in the draft.

"We'd like to have Brandon back anyway," Schneider said. "So, it probably does (add urgency) ... I'd be lying if I told you any different." It's hard to like Seattle's chances of bringing back Mebane if he makes to the open market. They have to be hoping his free agency is restricted instead.

The Tacoma News Tribune's Eric Williams believes that the Seahawks do not view free agent DT Brandon Mebane as a "cornerstone player."

That's exactly what their "original pick" tender indicates. Mebane, 26, will be a hot commodity if the NFL reaches a new Collective Bargaining Agreement. He's shown the ability to both push the pocket and consistently stuff the run.
