Rams declined tender offers to RB Kenneth Darby, CB Quincy Butler, and LB Curtis Johnson, making them unrestricted free agents.
They'll be able to sign elsewhere once a CBA is established. The Rams are smartly moving on from Darby after pushing him as Steven Jackson's backup for the past 2-3 seasons. He averaged 3.15 yards per carry last season. Thu, Mar 3, 2011 09:34:00 AM

Date:

The Rams are expected to pursue an upgrade at No. 2 running back this offseason.

We've seemingly been saying this for years, but the time has come with Kenneth Darby scheduled for free agency. While the Rams may like to retain Darby at a cheap salary, he's severely stretched as a spot starter and has proven no better than a No. 3-caliber runner with some special teams value. Darby averaged 3.15 YPC in 2010. St. Louis is expected to pursue a "speedy change-of-pace back who can get to the perimeter and catch passes."

Rams RB Kenneth Darby (ribs) is expected back in the lineup this week.

We don't like the news for Steven Jackson. S-Jax had seen a significant spike in receiving numbers with Darby out over the past few weeks, operating as an every-down back. Darby steals playing time in passing situations.

Rams RB Kenneth Darby (ribs) was limited in practice Wednesday.

Darby's availability is still uncertain for a Week 16 matchup with San Francisco. A passing-down back, Darby's absence from the last three games has led directly to a large spike in Steven Jackson's receiving stats.

Rams RB Kenneth Darby (ribs, questionable) was limited in practice Friday.

Trying to return from cracked ribs, Darby was limited in practice all week. His absence led to increased passing-game involvement for Steven Jackson last Sunday. S-Jax caught four balls for 38 yards -- highs since Week 10.

Rams RB Kenneth Darby revealed that he's dealing with a cracked rib.

After sitting out in Week 14, he returned to practice on a limited basis Wednesday, but it's possible he still won't be ready to play this weekend. It would be good for Steven Jackson's value if Darby sits out, because S-Jax played on third downs, something often reserved for Darby, against the Saints. Keith Toston will back up S-Jax again if Darby can't go.

Rams RB Kenneth Darby (ribs) returned to practice on Wednesday.

He should be healthy enough to back up Steven Jackson against the Chiefs.

Rams RB Kenneth Darby (ribs) is listed as questionable for Week 14 after missing Friday's practice.

Darby plays on passing downs and in some short-yardage situations, so his absence could get Steven Jackson even more work in Sunday's matchup with the Saints. We rank Jackson as the No. 12 overall running back this week.

Rams RB Kenneth Darby (ribs) was held out again on Thursday.

Rookie Keith Toston will get the call as Steven Jackson's backup if Darby can't go this week. Toston has just 32 yards on 14 carries (2.3 YPC) this season.

Rams RB Kenneth Darby (ribs) missed Wednesday's practice.

Darby also missed some practice time in October with a rib injury, so he may have aggravated it slightly. Undrafted rookie Keith Toston is behind Darby on the depth chart. Darby is averaging four touches a game this year.

Rams RB Kenneth Darby (rib) was limited again on Thursday.

The Rams' No. 2 should be dropped in all leagues with Steven Jackson declaring his groin back to 100 percent.
Thu, Oct 14, 2010 06:08:00 PM

Rams RB Kenneth Darby was limited in Wednesday's practice with a rib injury.

The injury was initially called a shoulder, but it's to Darby's side. Steven Jackson's backup is averaging just 3.0 YPC on 22 carries this season.

Rams backup RB Kenneth Darby came out of Sunday's loss with a sore shoulder.

The extent of Darby's injury is unknown, but it's a moot point with Steven Jackson now healthy.

RB Kenneth Darby only received four touches, but scored on a 21-yard touchdown catch in the Rams' Week 4 victory over the Seahawks.

Before the game, Darby was projected to split the workload with Steven Jackson, but S-Jax ended up dominating carries without incident. Speculative owners who took a chance on Darby should be happy they got a score out of the backup, but he shouldn't be on fantasy rosters with Jackson finishing the game healthy.

Rams RB Kenneth Darby is expected to share time, at best, with Steven Jackson in Sunday's game against Seattle.

Darby is no longer a fantasy option. He's already a below-average talent going against a stout Seahawks run defense, and needed volume (15-20 touches) to be a serious consideration in the matchup. Keep an eye on Jackson's official status -- to be posted in the next 30-40 minutes -- but if S-Jax is in the lineup, Darby must be placed on fantasy benches.
