Chargers released LT Jared Gaither.
Signed to a four-year, $24.6M contract a year ago, Gaither essentially quit on the Chargers. "Big Lazy" appeared in just four games, milking back and groin injuries that the medical staff never deemed serious before landing on injured reserve. The Chargers are so down on Gaither that they're willing to take a $6M cap hit this season. The 6'9/340 behemoth immediately becomes the best talent available on the left tackle market, but that's only if he wants to play. Meanwhile, the Chargers currently have King Dunlap penciled in on Philip Rivers' blind side, making Oklahoma LT Lane Johnson a strong possibility at No. 11 overall in April's draft. Chargers GM Tom Telesco says there are no "imminent" roster moves regarding troubled LT Jared Gaither.

Telesco spoke to Gaither on the phone a week ago. "I wasn't here last year, so kind of get his side of what happened," Telesco said of Gaither's troubles. "Nothing new with him right now. Nothing imminent." The Chargers would take a $6 million cap hit to cut Gaither. Telesco is clearly keeping all his options open.

Chargers GM Tom Telesco recently had a phone conversation with LT Jared Gaither, but says a decision about his future with the team isn't "imminent."

Telesco had been hoping for a face-to-face meeting, but said the phone conversation was "better than nothing." Telesco isn't rushing into releasing a player that will count $6 million against the cap either way, but it's hard to see Gaither having a Chargers future after he essentially quit on the team in 2012.

Chargers GM Tom Telesco is hoping for a sit-down meeting with LT Jared Gaither before deciding Gaither's future.

Gaither is a gifted player with major concerns about his toughness and passion for football. "I want to talk to him," Telesco said. "I can’t make any decisions based on what people have told me. It’s a new regime." If released, Gaither would still account for $6 million in dead money on the Chargers' cap.

Chargers GM Tom Telesco says a decision has yet to be made on LT Jared Gaither.

Telesco said the team is "still evaluating" Gaither, and "the past is the past." The past may be the past in the front office and with the new coaching staff, but the players in the locker room may not feel that way after Gaither refused to play hurt in 2012. San Diego would take on a $6 million cap hit by releasing Gaither.

CBS' Jason La Canfora says he would be "shocked" if the Chargers don't release LT Jared Gaither.

The Bolts would absorb a $6 million cap hit to release Gaither, but he has been a bad teammate and refused to play through pain. The Union-Tribune San Diego's Kevin Acee said shortly after the season that Gaither would not be back because "he can't be." One Chargers veteran later said, "I can't even look [Gaither] in the eye."

Kevin Acee of the Union-Tribune San Diego believes LT Jared Gaither will not return to the Chargers in 2013.

Acee's column is an opinion piece, but he's also very plugged in after many years on the Chargers beat. Per Acee, Gaither "will not be back" because "he can't be," and "it has been hinted at strongly" by club brass. "I can't even look him in the eye," one veteran Charger said of Gaither, who is believed to have milked injuries in 2012. Said another, "F---ing Gaither. He ----ing cost us big-time." The Chargers would absorb a $6 million cap hit to cut him.

Speaking about LT Jared Gaither's season-ending groin injury, Chargers coach Norv Turner said, "We gave Jared every opportunity to be a part of this team, and it just hasn't worked out."

It's a not so subtle shot from Norval at his would-be left tackle, whose "Big Lazy" ways reared their ugly head from the word "go" this season. Gaither missed nearly all of camp with a mysterious "back injury," and appeared in just four of 10 contests before his year was ended on Friday. Gaither's $4.5 million 2013 salary is guaranteed, however, so he'll be back in a Bolts uniform next season. They can only hope he works harder this offseason. We wouldn't hold our breath.

Chargers placed LT Jared Gaither (groin) on injured reserve, ending his season.

It's a huge blow to the rest-of-season outlook for San Diego's offense. Philip Rivers has sensed pressure when it isn't there with UDFA Mike Harris at left tackle this season, and the offense has often had trouble picking up first downs, let alone keeping pass rushers off Rivers' backside. Aside from perhaps Danario Alexander, expect a slow finish for the Chargers' skill-position players. Gaither is likely to return in 2013 at his affordable $4.5 million base salary, but his health has proven much too unreliable for the Chargers to count on Gaither as a starter. Per beat writer Michael Gehlken, Gaither wound up earning $2.25 million for every game played in 2012.

Chargers LT Jared Gaither (groin) missed practice on Wednesday.

Gaither hasn't practiced since two Wednesdays ago and hasn't played since Week 9. Although Baltimore ranks in the bottom half of the league in sacks, a San Diego squad without their top tackle would be welcome news. UDFA Mike Harris has started in place of Gaither six times this season and has been destroyed in pass protection. The Chargers are already going to be without LG Tyronne Green (hamstring).

Chargers LT Jared Gaither (groin) missed practice all week and is listed as doubtful for Week 11.

He's not going to play against the Broncos. It's a huge concern for San Diego's passing game against a Denver team that leads the league in sacks. Turnstile UDFA rookie Mike Harris will "protect" Philip Rivers' blindside again.

Chargers LT Jared Gaither (groin) remained out of practice Thursday.

It's looking like Gaither will miss his second straight game, which is bad news for the Chargers' entire offense. Fill-in UDFA Mike Harris nearly torpedoed the Bolts' entire game-plan against the Bucs. In the first season of a four-year, $24.6 million deal, Gaither is proving as unreliable as ever.

Chargers LT Jared Gaither (groin) did not practice on Wednesday.

Gaither has missed five of nine games this season, and last week's game wasn't pretty for his fill-in Mike Harris. Pro Football Focus gave the undrafted rookie Harris his second-worst grade of the season. He allowed one sack, two quarterback hits, and six hurries against the Bucs. Having a healthy Gaither on the left side of the line makes us a whole lot more comfortable with Ryan Mathews and Philip Rivers. Unfortunately, his Week 11 status is in doubt.

Chargers LT Jared Gaither (groin) is inactive for Sunday's Week 10 game against the Bucs.

It's a significant blow to the Chargers' offense as a whole -- and especially Philip Rivers. Backup Mike Harris is an undrafted rookie that's been a turnstile when asked to fill in. Gaither has now missed five of nine regular-season games after signing a four-year, $24.6 million contract in March.

Chargers LT Jared Gaither (groin) is not expected to start in Week 10 against the Buccaneers.

Beat writer Michael Gehlken calls Gaither "very iffy," and undrafted rookie LT Mike Harris "more likely" to get the starting nod at Tampa. Gaither will have a chance to test the groin in pre-game warmups Sunday, but it sounds like the Chargers are not optimistic. Harris has been a turnstile on the blind side.
