Free agent C Jake Grove worked out for the Lions Wednesday.

It's a bit puzzling as to why Grove, who was released by the Dolphins just before the season, hasn't been signed yet. He's injury-prone but has been a good run blocker in his career. The Lions are happy with starter Dominic Raiola and backup Dylan Gandy at center, so it's possible they're looking at Grove as a guard.

Dolphins released C Jake Grove.

Grove, who was signed to a five-year, $29.5 million contract before last season, lost out to Joe Berger for the starting center gig. Nagging injuries sapped his effectiveness and Berger provides a younger, cheaper alternative. It remains to be seen if Berger will be as effective as Grove was in run blocking. Grove, who collected $14 million guaranteed from the Dolphins, played in just 10 games for them. He'll draw significant interest at a reduced cost on the open market.

Dolphins C Jake Grove missed the team's preseason finale Thursday night due to an AC joint injury in his shoulder.

Beat writer Jeff Darlington's report doesn't state whether Grove's injury is serious, but his proneness to such maladies is the reason he's lost his starting job to Joe Berger. Grove is in danger of not making the final cut.

The Dolphins have opened C Jake Grove's starting job to competition.

The idea is surprising, as the Fins were a much better rushing offense when Grove was in the lineup last year. He was also given a $30 million contract last offseason. Joe Berger and Grove are sharing first-team reps during OTAs. Berger did play well in spot duty last season, and is two years younger.

The Dolphins averaged 44.2 more rushing yards per game when C Jake Grove was in the lineup.

Grove missed the majority of six games in 2009 thanks to an ankle injury. The former second-round pick remains a one of the best run-blocking centers in the game.

Dolphins C Jake Grove (ankle) is expected to miss Sunday's game against the Patriots, a source tells the Miami Herald.

The Herald also reports that it's possible Grove could miss extended time beyond this week, saying there's a chance he is done for the season. Joe Berger will start and it's a blow to the running game as Grove was signed to deal with nose tackles like the Patriots' Vince Wilfork.

It's a pretty big blow to the Dolphins' run game. Grove is one of the team's best offensive linemen and he'll be replaced in the starting lineup by Joe Berger.

Dolphins C Jake Grove limped off the field with a left ankle injury early in the third quarter of Thursday's game.

He's getting treatment on the Miami bench, and his return is questionable. One of the NFL's best centers this season, Grove has been a key cog in the improved rushing attack. Veteran Joe Berger has come on to replace him.

ESPN's K.C. Joyner noted that Dolphins C Jake Grove had a 90.6 win percentage at the point of attack on running plays last season.

The stat measures whether the opposing defender stuffs the hole or makes contact with the runner. Grove's rate, a significant improvement over Samson Satele's 79.5 percent, should help open holes for Ronnie Brown this season.

Dolphins signed C Jake Grove to a five-year, $29.5 million contract with $14 million guaranteed.

Grove, 29, battled injuries throughout his Raiders career, starting over 12 games just once in five years. But the former No. 45 overall pick was always known as a top talent and Miami was set on replacing undersized Samson Satele. Satele, a Cam Cameron holdover, will now be a backup. The Fins have $154M in deals invested at center, left guard, and both tackle positions.

The Dolphins are reportedly poised to offer free agent C Jake Grove a five-year contract offer.

Not that it's a bad decision, but Miami might be the only team willing to go this long on Grove. A contract is expected to be finalized Tuesday.
