Chargers claimed RB Marcus Mason off waivers from the Redskins.
Mason, 26, appeared in nine games for Washington last year and averaged 4.0 yards per carry on 32 totes. He doesn't do anything particularly well, but San Diego just needs warm bodies at tailback after cutting LaDainian Tomlinson and Michael Bennett. Mason will battle for a spot this summer. The 'Skins released three running backs Thursday, leaving Clinton Portis and Anthony Alridge as the only backs on the roster. Mason will be in another camp this summer, threatening to lead the preseason in rushing yards.

Redskins re-signed RB Marcus Mason.

Mason was on Washington's roster for the first six weeks or so of the season, but they chose Quinton Ganther over him in October. He doesn't do anything particularly well and is now No. 3 behind Rock Cartwright and Ganther.

Redskins offensive coordinator Sherman Smith says the Redskins will pick up a running back this week and mentioned Marcus Mason as a possibility.

Mason was with the team until he was cut on Oct. 20. He knows the offense and will probably be asked to step in as the No. 3 RB with Ladell Betts and Clinton Portis both out.

The Patriots will work out free agent running backs Marcus Mason and Maurice Hicks Monday.

This doesn't speak well to Sammy Morris' (knee) availability for this week. The Patriots have three healthy running backs in Laurence Maroney, BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Kevin Faulk but could be looking for some practice bodies. Mason would be a candidate for the practice squad.

Redskins released RB Marcus Mason.

Mason was essentially limited to special teams duty, and the Redskins seem to prefer Quinton Ganther in that role.

Redskins declared RB Marcus Mason, CB Kevin Barnes, C Edwin Williams, LB Robert Henson, OL Chad Rinehart, OL D'Anthony Batiste, DT Anthony Montgomery and DE Renaldo Wynn inactive.

Mason was a camp darling that is simply insurance for Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts.

Redskins coach Jim Zorn dispelled the notion that RB Marcus Mason could be a goal-line option this season.

As expected. Zorn envisions Mason as a special teamer with no assurances of being active on a weekly basis. His main offensive role is to be ready for action should both Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts suffer injuries at the same time.

Beat writer Ryan O'Halloran thinks Marcus Mason could be used in short-yardage situations.

Not sure if we're buying this or the Washington Post's claim that Mason will be Clinton Portis' backup before the season is over. Mason was a camp darling and deserved to make the team but we highly doubt he'd ever take carries away from Ladell Betts or Portis.

According to Jason Reid of the Washington Post, RB Marcus Mason has made the roster.

It's a little bit of an upset. Mason struggles in pass protection but obviously showed enough this year. He'll be the fourth running back behing Clinton Portis, Ladell Betts and Rock Cartwright. The Redskins cut Mason at this time a year ago.

Redskins claimed RB Marcus Mason off waivers from the Jets.

Mason was with Washington in preseason last year and has an idea about coach Jim Zorn's offense, but fellow waiver grab Anthony Alridge has a better chance to fill the team's need for a "speed" complement to Clinton Portis.

Jets waived RB Marcus Mason.

Mason always looks good against third-stringers in preseason, but lacks the speed and moves to be more than a fourth tailback option/special teamer.

Jets waived RB Marcus Mason.

The pre-season rushing champ had been inactive for five straight games since being signed off the Ravens practice squad in late October.

Jets signed RB Marcus Mason off the Ravens' practice squad.

He replaces Jesse Chatman as the Jets' third back. Mason was in camp with the Redskins this summer and led the NFL in preseason rushing. He won't get the ball in New York barring injury to Thomas Jones or Leon Washington.

Ravens signed RB Marcus Mason to their practice squad.

Mason led the NFL in preseason rushing. He has a shot to join the active roster early if Willis McGahee's recovery from knee surgery continues slowly.
