Vikings signed DE Jeff Charleston and waived DT Terrell Resonno.

A fringe roster type as a situational pass rusher, Charleston has posted seven sacks in 52 games with the Saints over the past four seasons. Resonno went undrafted out of Mizzou in April.

ESPN's Stacey Dales reports that Jeff Charleston is expected to start at right defensive end until Will Smith returns from suspension.

First-round pick Cameron Jordan and Junior Galette will open the season on the bench. Charleston racked up three sacks and two forced fumbles in limited action last year, but he's an obvious downgrade from Smith in terms of pass rush ability. The Saints will likely struggle to push the pocket with their base personnel against the Packers Thursday night. They host the Bears in Week 2.

Saints re-signed DE Jeff Charleston.

A pass-rushing specialist, Charleston appeared in all 16 games a season ago, notching 26 tackles and three sacks. He could have a hard time equaling those numbers in 2011 with the Saints sporting an improved defensive line.

Saints re-signed restricted free agent DE Jeff Charleston to a one-year, $1.101 million contract.

A former undrafted free agent from Idaho State, Charles finished last year with 10 tackles and zero sacks in 16 appearances. He also contributes on special teams, but will be low on the depth chart if he makes the 2010 roster.

Updating a previous item, the Saints did extend a low qualifying offer to restricted free agent DE Jeff Charleston.

The one-year, $1.101 million offer flew under the radar because the Saints never announced it. The Saints can match all offers for Charleston, but they won't receive compensation if he leaves.

The Saints did not extend a qualifying restricted free agent offer to DE Jeff Charleston.

With Charleston gone and LE Charles Grant released, the team has just two defensive ends under contract for 2010: RE Will Smith and nickel end Bobby McCray. The Saints seem likely to use their first-round pick at the position.
