Ex-49ers LB Jeff Ulbrich has been named the defensive coordinator/assistant head coach at UCLA.
Ulbrich, 37 next week, was a third-round pick of the 49ers in 2000 and spent 10 seasons with the team before retiring in 2009. He immediately got into coaching, joining the Seahawks as a special teams assistant in 2010. Ulbrich then joined Jim Mora's staff at UCLA in 2012 as linebackers coach, where he coached first-round prospect Anthony Barr. Ulbrich is quickly rising up the ranks. Feb 9 - 11:42 AM

Former 49ers LB Jeff Ulbrich has retired from football.

The trusty linebacker/special teamer spent all 10 of his seasons with San Francisco after being drafted in the third round out of Hawaii in 2000. Ulbrich, 32, now plans to pursue a career in coaching. He played his last game on October 11, and his season had already ended on I.R. with a concussion.

49ers placed ILB Jeff Ulbrich on injured reserve with a concussion, ending his season.

Ulbrich, who doesn't have a contract for 2010 and will be 33 next season, is considering retirement. He was mostly playing special teams this year.

Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rose Press Democrat reports Niners LB Jeff Ulbrich took a pay reduction from $2.23M to $950,000 for upcoming season.

That deal likely ensures Ulbrich sticks this season as a reserve even after the Niners drafted fellow inside backer Scott McKillop.

Jeff Ulbrich reportedly has the edge to start at the 49ers "Ted" linebacker spot over Takeo Spikes in Week 1.

Beat writer Matt Barrows expects Spikes to ultimately take over once he grows more familiar with the Niners defense. Newly signed Ahmad Brooks is more of a "Mike" linebacker behind Manny Lawson.

Coach Mike Nolan says Jeff Ulbrich is the clear favorite to be the 49ers' starting "Ted" inside linebacker this season.

Dontarrious Thomas has moved behind "Mike" 'backer Patrick Willis. A Ted in Nolan's scheme can get about 80 tackles a year, but it isn't a big-play position. Brandon Moore will be Ulbrich's main competition in camp.

49ers LB Jeff Ulbrich suffered a high-ankle sprain on Sunday.

DE Ronald Fields suffered a sprained shoulder, and T Adam Snyder sprained his neck. Snyder was able to return, but it's unknown how much time, if any, the others will miss.

Jeff Ulbrich left Sunday's game in the third quarter with an apparent leg injury.

Ulbrich was able to make his way off the field under his own power, but was limping noticeably and seems unlikely to return.

49ers LB Jeff Ulbrich will need offseason surgery for a torn labrum.

He should be ready for camp. Ulbrich is slated to be San Francisco's top backup at inside linebacker, behind Brandon Moore and Derek Smith.

LB Jeff Ulbrich (foot) is questionable for Week 15.

Ulbrich has been banged up all year, but started at middle linebacker in place of LB Derek Smith last week. With Smith and Ulbrich potentially out for Week 15, the 49ers may turn to recently signed LB Jay Foreman.

San Francisco linebacker Jeff Ulbrich will start in the middle in Week 14.

The seventh-year pro could be a nice source of tackles as long as Derek Smith (hamstring) is out.

The 49ers are expected to stay in a 4-3 defensive alignment with Derek Smith (strained hamstring) sidelined indefinitely.

Jeff Ulbrich, who lost his weak-side job near mid-season to Brandon Moore, is expected to step into Smith's spot at middle linebacker. Coach Mike Nolan will likely pursue players via the draft and free agency who better fit the 3-4 during the upcoming offseason. Adalius Thomas would present an interesting complement to Manny Lawson on the outside.

LB Jeff Ulbrich suffered a torn thumb ligament Sunday.

"I looked down and my thumb was up by my wrist," Ulbrich said. Then, like only a football player would, Ulbrich popped the thumb back into place and kept playing. He's scheduled for surgery this week, but isn't expected to miss any time.

49ers LB Jeff Ulbrich has been bumped from the starting lineup.

He's been replaced by Brandon Moore and is now a nickel linebacker.
Mon, Nov 6, 2006 09:33:00 PM

The 49ers signed LB Jeff Ulbrich (biceps) to a five-year contract extension.

Ulbrich is currently on injured reserve and his deal didn't expire until after next season, so it's an odd move. Still, the linebackers are the strength of the 49ers and Ulbrich played very well before getting hurt. Signing Julian Peterson will be tougher.
