Former 49ers DT Bryant Young has been announced as the University of Florida's co-defensive line coach.
It's that slow of a news day. Young spent 2009 as an assistant on Charlie Weis' Notre Dame staff before becoming San Jose State's defensive line coach in 2010. He's slowly working his way up the coaching ladder. Sat, Jan 15, 2011 12:18:00 PM

49ers DT Bryant Young announced his retirement from football.

He finishes playing at a high level, with 89.5 career sacks, and his body mostly intact. Young smoothly transitioned from being a pass rushing tackle to a 3-4 defensive end late in his career. The four-time All Pro probably isn't a Hall of Famer, but will be a shoo-in for the 49ers' ring of honor.

49ers DL Bryant Young confirmed Wednesday that Sunday will "more than likely" mark his final home game in a San Francisco uniform.

The 14-year vet and Notre Dame alum wanted to get his intentions out of the way for the sake of the fans. He's likely to officially retire this offseason.

49ers DE Bryant Young indicated after Sunday's game that he's close to calling it a career.

"My days are numbered," Young said. "Let's be real about it." The 35-year-old has 6.5 sacks this year and is still playing at a relatively high level, but Young isn't signed through 2008 and could retire at season's end.

The 49ers have chosen to let veterans DE Bryant Young, CB Walt Harris and G Larry Allen skip Wednesday practices throughout the season.

All three players are 35 years old and stars sitting out mid-week practices is relatively common throughout the league.

49ers DE Bryant Young received an epidural injection for a bulging disk on Thursday.

Young, 35, hasn't practiced since the first day of training camp in July. He expects to make it back in time for the final exhibition game.

49ers agreed to a one-year contract with DL Bryant Young.

He'll earn roughly $4 million in 2007. Young is 35 but hasn't slowed down much and even though San Francisco will try to keep him in a rotation, we suspect he'll be starting again at defensive end this season.

Team officials are "pretty confident that a deal will be worked out" between the Niners and free agent DL Bryant Young.

The sides are discussing a one-year deal, which will likely be the last for the 35-year-old Young. We'd guess the deal will be worth $3-3.5 million.

The 49ers have begun contract talks with free agent DL Bryant Young.

The Niners want Young, 35, to take a pay cut from his $4.25 million base salary in 2007 and be a situational player, which could be difficult considering their in-house alternatives to play 3-4 end are quite limited.

Bryant Young will have a reduced role if he returns to the 49ers in 2007.

Coach Mike Nolan thinks Young, 35, will come back, but "his role would have to change and he understands that." The Niners aren't willing to pay Young the $4.25 million he earned last year to be a role player.

49ers DL Bryant Young is expected to return to the team in 2007.

Young, 35 in January, has reached playing-time incentives that voided the final years of his contract and can be a free agent after the season, but has said that he will only play for San Francisco. The Niners could offer Young a one-year deal in the $5-million range and start him at end as they revamp their personnel to fit a full-fledged 3-4 defense.

Coach Mike Nolan denied a report that defensive coordinator Billy Davis is on the verge of being replaced by Mike Singletary.

"That's incorrect," Nolan said. The 49ers' defense ranks dead last in points allowed per game after giving up 41 to the Chiefs Sunday.

The 49ers are reportedly discussing a new contract for DE Bryant Young.

Despite being 34-years-old, Young has continued to play at a high level late in his career. Young's original contract expires after the 2006 season.

Bryant Young was able to practice Thursday and Friday for the first times since tearing his ACL.

Young is tied for seventh in the NFC with eight sacks. "We've got three games left and there's still a lot out there to be done," Young said. "It's probably the easiest route to take, to just bow out and say I'm not going to come back. But this is an injury I felt I could come back from, so I'm going to be there as best I can for my teammates."

Bryant Young (knee) was upgraded from out to doubtful Friday.

The defensive lineman is not expected to play this week, but could return in week 15 against Jacksonville. "He's trying to get back on the field in the worst way, which is very evident -- he's out here working all the time," coach Mike Nolan said. "B.Y. is B.Y. He's the kind of guy you think you're going to get back every week because he puts forth so much effort."
