Free agent WR Matt Willis worked out for the Patriots Monday.
Willis has caught just 28 balls over the last two seasons for the Broncos, but has chipped in as a solid special teamer. He likely got a look in New England because of the Josh McDaniels connection. May 8 - 8:38 AM

There's a "wide gap" between the Broncos' top four receivers and the rest, including Matt Willis.

Andre Caldwell and Brandon Stokley are competing for the third receiver role behind Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker. Willis will have to hold off Gerell Robinson and former Arena Football League star Greg Orton for the final spot.

Broncos re-signed restricted free agent WR Matt Willis to a one-year, $1.26 million contract.

Willis, who turned 28 a few days ago, set career highs in receptions (18) and yards (267) last season, but is setup for a diminished role in Denver this season. Broncos tendered restricted free agent WR Matt Willis at the original-pick level.

Willis was originally signed as an undrafted free agent. At a salary of $1.26 million, though, the Broncos shouldn't have to worry about utilizing their right of first refusal. Willis caught just 18 passes for 267 yards in 2011.

Matt Willis caught four passes for 75 yards in Denver's Week 14 win over the Bears.

With just 12 catches on the season coming into this afternoon, Willis was targeted eight times with Eddie Royal sidelined with a concussion. Even if Royal misses another game in Week 15, Willis will remain well off the radar in all formats.

Broncos WR Matt Willis has been a standout in training camp thus far.

The former undrafted free agent has made several tough catches and has impressed teammates. "He's been great," Brandon Stokley said. Willis has just one catch on his three-year resume and is a long shot for more than a practice squad spot, but he's certainly off to a nice start.
