Panthers OLB/DE Jyles Tucker has left training camp and is not expected back.
Tucker quit for "personal reasons," and coach Ron Rivera does not anticipate him returning to the squad. It sounds like 29-year-old Tucker is calling it a career. Once considered a promising UDFA out of Wake Forest, Tucker tallied 5.5 sacks in 2008 with San Diego. He was never able to recapture that form. Mon, Jul 30, 2012 11:48:00 AM

Panthers signed OLB/DE Jyles Tucker, formerly of the Chargers.

Released by San Diego three years into a five-year contract, Tucker was out of the league last season. Although he has a history with Ron Rivera, Tucker will have to make the switch to defensive end in the Panthers' 4-3 defense.

Chargers released OLB Jyles Tucker.

The move saves $1 million in base salary. Tucker was once billed as an in-house heir apparent to Shawne Merriman, but his playing time petered out in a weak Chargers outside linebacker corps last season. The 28-year-old (in September) could latch on elsewhere as a camp-body type for the veteran minimum.

Chargers placed OLB Jyles Tucker on injured reserve with a torn pectoral muscle, ending his season.

Tucker, 27, appeared in three of San Diego's first four games off the bench, notching just three tackles and a sack. The Chargers are thin at outside 'backer, but Tucker's loss won't have a visible impact on the stat sheets.

Chargers OLB Jyles Tucker suffered a chest injury in the third quarter Sunday and did not return.

Tucker was injured while rushing a punt and his arm was in a sling after the game. The special teamer was forced into a major defensive role with Shawne Merriman and Larry English sidelined by injuries.

Chargers OLB Jyles Tucker practiced fully Tuesday after missing much of last season with an ankle injury.

Tucker could be in a roster fight with Antwan Applewhite, who is also fully recovered after missing much of last season with a hamstring injury. Neither will have a significant role unless Shawne Merriman is traded.

Chargers placed OLB Jyles Tucker (ankle) on injured reserve, ending his season.

Tucker had just four tackles in seven games. Viewed as a potential long-term in-house replacement for Shawne Merriman as recently as the start of the 2008 season, Tucker's stock tumbled when the Bolts used their 2009 first-round pick on Larry English. Tucker will return at his $570K salary for 2010.

Chargers LB Jyles Tucker injured his ankle against the Giants and left the stadium on crutches.

Tucker's status for this week's game against the Eagles is unknown. He has just four tackles in seven games this season.

Chargers LB Jyles Tucker and Shaun Phillips were both shaken up late in the fourth quarter of Saturday's game.

It's uncertain what Tucker hurt, but it appears his bell was rung. Phillips returned after a play and Tucker looked well enough to return in overtime.

Chargers OLB Jyles Tucker has recorded only four sacks this season and just one since Week 4.

So much for "replacing" Shawne Merriman. No matter the coordinator, San Diego's defense has played on its heels all season and brought minimal pressure. Shaun Phillips also only has four sacks. While Merriman won't get new deal after the year, his value to the team has never been more obvious.

Chargers OLB Jyles Tucker (hamstring) said he felt "great" after doing side work Thursday, but he's yet to practice this week.

Tucker is hoping to play Sunday, but it's no sure bet. Marques Harris is playing well in place of Shawne Merriman's fill-in. General manager A.J. Smith has provided the Chargers with enviable depth.

Chargers OLB Jyles Tucker (hamstring) will not play in Week 6.

He may also miss Week 7 because of his strained hammy. Marques Harris filled in for Tucker last Sunday and registered four tackles and a half sack.

Chargers OLB Jyles Tucker (hamstring) is listed as doubtful for Week 5.

Look for Marques Harris to start opposite Shaun Phillips at Miami.

Chargers OLB Jyles Tucker (hamstring) has yet to participate in practice this week.

Shawne Merriman's replacement at strong outside linebacker is in danger of missing Sunday's game against the Dolphins. Marques Harris would start if Tucker can't go. Tucker has three sacks in his last two games.

Chargers OLB Jyles Tucker left in the first half Sunday with a hamstring injury and did not return.

Tucker had two sacks in Week 3 and another in Week 4 before he was forced to leave. His absence opened the gates for Marques Harris, who strip-sacked JaMarcus Russell and recovered the ball on the same play in the fourth quarter. The Chargers scored on the next play to take the lead.
