Davone Bess is expected to open the season as the Browns' No. 2 receiver.
With Josh Gordon suspended for the first two games, Bess is behind only Greg Little and Jordan Cameron for early-season targets. David Nelson and Travis Benjamin are also candidates for extended playing time. Bess projects to start at 'X' receiver in the Browns' base offense and move into the slot in three-wide sets. New Browns WR Davone Bess is second in the NFL in third-down receptions over the last five seasons.

Bess' 130 third-down catches for the Dolphins since 2008 trails only Roddy White's 146. It's a role he can fill for the Browns as well, who struggled to move the chains with stone-handed Greg Little and deep burner Josh Gordon last season. They ranked 30th in the league in third-down efficiency at just 30.7 percent.

Browns acquired WR Davone Bess from the Dolphins in exchange for a swap of mid-round draft picks.

Bess was nothing more than a sure-handed slot receiver in Miami, catching 321 passes over five seasons but averaging just 10.7 yards per grab and scoring a mere 12 touchdowns in 77 games. It's a low-risk grab for the Browns, who have Josh Gordon and Greg Little outside but question marks inside in the form of David Nelson. Bess, still just 27, has a good chance to emerge as the Browns' primary slot man this season. He has signed a three-year extension with Cleveland, adding to the one year he had remaining on his previous deal.
Apr 26 - 7:03 PM

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Browns and Dolphins are still "haggling over mid-round picks" in the potential Davone Bess trade.

Draft-week trades sometimes fall through because the acquiring team feels uncomfortable about giving up compensation for players they can't immediately put through physicals. The same goes for the potential Branden Albert trade. The Browns want Bess, but they're not going to overpay. It's worth noting Bess missed late-season 2012 time with a back injury. A physical is critical.
Apr 26 - 3:20 PM

The Miami Herald reports the Dolphins are asking for a fourth- or fifth-round pick in exchange for Davone Bess.

The Herald's Barry Jackson confirms Cleveland and Miami are "discussing draft compensation." Bess offers no big-play ability and is somewhat expensive ($2.6 million) in the last year of his contract without a role on the Dolphins, so GM Jeff Ireland isn't in great position to negotiate. We suspect Bess will wind up heading to the Browns for roughly a sixth-round draft choice.
Apr 25 - 12:15 PM

Sources tell Draft Insider Tony Pauline there's a "99.9 percent" chance Davone Bess is traded to the Browns for "mid-round picks."

If Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland could get "picks" for Bess, it'd be a huge victory. The 27-year-old doesn't have a role in Miami after the Brandon Gibson addition. In Cleveland, Bess would likely compete with David Nelson for slot duties. He has one year left on his contract. Per the Miami Herald, the Fins also called the Jets, 49ers, Cardinals, Vikings, and Rams to gauge their interest in Bess.
Apr 24 - 8:15 PM

The Chicago Sun-Times reports the Browns are "seriously considering" a trade for Davone Bess, and are one of "several teams in the mix."

Reporter Sean Jensen hears "mid-round picks (are) being discussed." The Miami Herald confirms Bess is on the block, and it would be a "surprise" if he wasn't moved. Bess' ticket out of Miami was punched the day the Dolphins randomly signed Brandon Gibson to a three-year, $9.755 million deal. A chain-mover who offers nothing after the catch, Bess is due $2.6 million this season. He could maybe fetch a fifth- or sixth-round pick. A fifth would be a big-time win for Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland.
Apr 24 - 7:32 PM

The Miami Herald confirms Davone Bess "could be traded" if the Dolphins acquire a slot receiver in the draft.

We're not sure what the Fins think they could get for Bess, who's long been a media favorite but has never offered big-play ability. If NFL teams were seriously interested, we'd have heard trade chatter by now. There has been zero buzz. Perhaps Bess could net the Fins a seventh-round pick during the draft.
Apr 19 - 7:34 PM

The Palm Beach Post considers Davone Bess the Dolphins' No. 1 veteran in danger of being cut.

Bess and his non-guaranteed $2.63 million salary have been squarely on the bubble since the Dolphins signed Brandon Gibson. Cutting Bess would clear $2.7 million in cap space. Beat writer Ben Volin wouldn't be "shocked" if Bess was traded before or during the draft. It's getting harder to envision Bess in a Dolphins uniform come Week 1.
Mar 29 - 11:25 AM

Dolphins coach Joe Philbin indicated that Davone Bess will be competing for a roster spot in training camp.

Bess will have a non-guaranteed $2.63 million salary working against him as he competes with players due far less money. Philbin lumped Bess in with "10-12 receivers" the Dolphins plan to bring to camp, competing for jobs. It's quite possible Bess will be on the trade block leading up to April's draft.
Mar 22 - 2:25 AM

According to the Miami Herald's Armando Salguero, Davone Bess' roster spot isn't in immediate danger.

Per Salguero, the Dolphins' current plan is to let Bess duke it out with Brandon Gibson for No. 3 receiver duties in camp. They're redundant talents, and Miami isn't going to cut Gibson, so it still seems more likely than not Bess is somewhere else come Week 1.
Mar 17 - 6:46 PM

The Miami Herald considers Davone Bess' roster spot "at risk" after the additions of Mike Wallace and Brandon Gibson.

We haven't seen Gibson's contract terms yet, but Bess is looking like a No. 4 receiver and his $2.63 million base salary is pricey for one of those. It's worth noting that Dolphins coach Joe Philbin often used four receivers as offensive coordinator in Green Bay. It's not out of the question that Miami keeps all four of Wallace, Brian Hartline, Gibson, and Bess on the 53-man roster.
Mar 15 - 11:10 PM

The Miami Herald reports Davone Bess' status with the Dolphins remains "unchanged" despite Friday's signing of Brandon Gibson.

Chain movers who offer little after the catch, Bess and Gibson are redundant talents, but the Dolphins are sitting tight for the time being. Due $2.633 million in the final year of his contract, Bess might draw mild interest as a trade candidate.
Mar 15 - 6:11 PM

The Palm Beach Post suggests Davone Bess may not be a part of the Dolphins' 2013 plans due to "friction" over his late-season back injury.

Per beat writer Ben Volin, the Dolphins "thought Bess could play" through the injury, but he shut it down instead. Bess is still an efficient slot man and owed an affordable $2.63 million, so we suspect he'll return for the final year of his deal. He probably shouldn't get his hopes up for an in-season extension.
Feb 22 - 11:41 AM

The Palm Beach Post reports Davone Bess is fully recovered from the back injury that held him out of Miami's final three games, but that the Dolphins "weren’t thrilled" it caused him to miss so much time.

The missed games were the first of Bess' five-year career, so it's possible he's similarly "not thrilled" the Dolphins weren't thrilled with his effort to get healthy. Bess will make a cushy $2.63 million for a run-of-the-mill slot receiver next season, but he's guaranteed to be back with the Dolphins' receiver corps still woefully thin.
