The San Francisco 49ers have forced just 12 turnovers in 15 games this season.
The 49ers check-in at 31st among NFL defenses in takeaways, ahead of only the Dallas Cowboys. San Francisco failed to force a turnover in three of the last six weeks, and the team went 1-5 in that stretch. Week 17 brings a matchup with the St. Louis Rams, where the 28th-ranked run defense of the 49ers will be no match for Todd Gurley. Fantasy owners will be wise to leave the 49ers D/ST on the waiver wire. Wed, Dec 30, 2015 11:55:00 PM

The San Francisco 49ers will face Cincinnati quarterback A.J. McCarron in Week 15 with Andy Dalton (thumb) out.

McCarron racked up 280 passing yards and threw a pair of touchdowns after Dalton went down in Week 14. The backup quarterback also chucked a pair of interceptions as he showed no apprehension about throwing the ball deep. The 49ers D/ST has been such a disappointment in 2015, they are not a recommended fantasy option against a quarterback with 36 career passing attempts. Leave this group on the waiver wire.

The San Francisco defense will face Cleveland QB Johnny Manziel in Week 14.

Manziel is back as the Cleveland starter this week, and last played in Week 10 when he threw for 372 yards. Manziel has thrown only two interceptions in 128 passing attempts this season, but is completing under 60 percent of his passes on the year. Despite a relatively friendly matchup, the 49ers D/ST is not a recommended fantasy option in Week 14, as the group has recorded just nine turnovers and 20 sacks in 12 games.

The San Francisco defense has forced just eight turnovers in 11 games, the second-worst mark among NFL defenses.

The 49ers have not recorded an interception since Week 7, in what has been a rough season for coach Jim Tomsula's defense. In addition to not forcing turnovers, the San Francisco defense is allowing opposing quarterbacks to complete passes at a 69.1 percent clip, the second-highest percentage in the NFL. The 49ers D/ST is an avoidable group this week at Chicago.

San Francisco LB Ahmad Brooks is going through the NFL concussion protocol this week and did not practice on Thursday.

Brooks had three tackles and a sack in Week 11 at Seattle, but is a dicey bet to suit up in Week 12 when the 49ers host the Arizona Cardinals. With or without Brooks, the San Francisco defense will face a stiff challenge this week against the Arizona offense that has averaged a hefty 35.7 points per game over the last three weeks. The 49ers D/ST can be left comfortably on the waiver wire.

The San Francisco defense will attempt to improve upon their Week 7 performance against the Seahawks when the team travels to Seattle in Week 11.

The first 2015 matchup between Seattle and San Francisco was lopsided as Russell Wilson and company tallied 388 total yards in a 20-3 victory at Levi's Stadium. This week, San Francisco will look to return the favor at CenturyLink Field in Seattle. Despite a surprising Week 10 effort against Atlanta, the San Francisco defense is struggling against opposing passing games and has failed to make a dent in the sack and turnover categories this season. The 49ers D/ST won't be a viable fantasy option on the road in Week 11.

The San Francisco defense heads into their Week 10 bye in the bottom-five among NFL defenses in passing yards allowed per game, completion percentage, and yards per attempt from opposing passers.

The 49ers D/ST has not even sniffed the fantasy radar this season and their struggles against the pass will keep them on fantasy waiver wires throughout the remainder of 2015. After the bye, San Francisco takes on Seattle and Arizona, and will not be a recommended fantasy option.

The San Francisco defense has a tough Week 9 matchup on tap as the Atlanta Falcons travel to Levi's Stadium to face the 49ers.

Atlanta is fourth among NFL offenses, averaging a healthy 414.8 total yards per game in 2015. With the San Francisco offense being led by Blaine Gabbert this week, the 49ers defense will likely be on the field a ton while having to deal with Devonta Freeman and Julio Jones. The 49ers D/ST has been a miserable fantasy option in 2015 and won't be startable in Week 9.

The San Francisco defense will face a tough task in Week 8 as they look to corral St. Louis running back Todd Gurley.

Gurley has been an absolute beast as a rookie and has run for 144.3 yards per game over the last three weeks. The 49ers' 20th-ranked run defense will likely have a difficult time stopping Gurley, making the San Francisco D/ST an avoidable Week 8 fantasy option. This group will remain on fantasy waiver wires for the foreseeable future with matchups against Atlanta, Seattle, and Arizona looming after St. Louis.

The struggling San Francisco defense will face the Seattle Seahawks at home on Thursday night.

The 49ers D/ST has coughed up 472.5 total yards per game over their last two contests as they head into a matchup with their division rivals. Although the 49ers have allowed just 13.3 points per game at home compared to 40.0 points per game on the road this season, they will not be a recommended Week 7 fantasy option against Russell Wilson and the Seahawks offense.

The San Francisco 49ers are tied for 32nd among NFL teams with just two forced turnovers through four weeks.

The 49ers D/ST has intercepted two passes on the season but has yet to recover a fumble on defense. While the San Francisco defense is allowing opposing offenses to rack up yardage in chunks, the lack of turnover production has cemented this group in the bottom-tier of fantasy defenses. Week 5 will be no different, as the 49ers D/ST is not a start-worthy fantasy option as they travel to New York to face the Giants.
Sat, Oct 10, 2015 04:00:00 PM

The San Francisco 49ers have allowed 90 points in their last two games.

The 49ers did face two stellar offenses in Pittsburgh and Arizona, but the performance of this defense has plummeted after a great Week 1 showing against Minnesota. Things won't get any easier this week, as Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers pay a visit to San Francisco. The 49ers D/ST will remain a waiver wire fixture and is among the absolute bottom fantasy options in Week 4.

CSN Bay Area lists San Francisco LB Ahmad Brooks as a key player to watch in Week 3.

Brooks has not recorded a sack through two weeks of the 2015 season. The San Francisco linebacker has averaged seven sacks per season over the past four years and is being counted on heavily this season after the tumultuous offseason of the 49ers defense. San Francisco failed to sack Ben Roethlisberger a single time in Week 2 on their way to giving up 43 points to the Steelers. The 49ers D/ST will certainly need improvement in their pass rush this week against Carson Palmer and the Arizona Cardinals.

CSN Bay Area believes the San Francisco defense will focus their efforts on stopping the passing attack of Ben Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

This is a fairly obvious statement with Roethlisberger coming off a 4,952 yard 2014 season and a 351 yard effort in Week 1. However, the focus on the passing game could allow running back DeAngelo Williams to duplicate his successful Week 1 performance. The San Francisco defense allowed just 248 total yards to Minnesota in their season opener, but now travel to Pittsburgh to face a far more prolific offense. Despite the impressive Week 1 performance, the 49ers D/ST is not a startable group in fantasy leagues this week.
Sun, Sep 20, 2015 12:27:00 AM

The San Francisco 49ers expect cornerback Tramaine Brock to play in Week 1 after being limited in practice this week.

The San Francisco defense lost its share of defensive contributors over the offseason, so having Brock back in the fold will be important as the 49ers face the Minnesota Vikings on Monday night. New head coach Jim Tomsula will have plenty of work ahead of him on the defensive side of the ball this season, which will begin with attempting to stop Adrian Peterson and the Minnesota offense. The San Francisco D/ST unit is a fantasy option to avoid in Week 1.
