Released by the Redskins on Tuesday, free agent WR Malcolm Kelly indicated that he may consider retirement.
The former second-round pick just couldn't stay off the shelf in four training camps with the Skins. "As much as I love this thing, I’m not going to go out here and kill myself," Kelly said. "It’s one thing to have one injury, man, but to have as many as I’ve had, it’s to the point where it is what it is." Wed, Aug 31, 2011 06:04:00 PM

Redskins waived WR Malcolm Kelly with an injury settlement.

Kelly had been sidelined with a foot injury since the beginning of training camp. Besieged by knee and hamstring injuries since entering the league as 51st overall pick in the 2008 draft, Kelly managed just 28 catches for 365 yards and nary a touchdown in his three years in Washington. He won't attract much interest league wide.

Redskins WR Malcolm Kelly will undergo another round of MRI and X-rays on his slow-healing foot injury.

He's been out since August 4. The Redskins will probably wait for Kelly to get healthy, then place him on waivers. He isn't going to make the team.

Malcolm Kelly is going to be sidelined about a week due to a sore foot.

It's the latest malaise for Kelly, who never seems to be healthy or effective. The 2008 second-round pick has shown absolutely nothing in three years and is now a poor bet to even make the final roster.

Redskins WR Malcolm Kelly "feels good" after dropping 10-15 pounds this offseason.

Beat writer John Keim notes that Kelly was the "experienced receiver of the bunch" at Tuesday's workouts, which speaks volumes about the state of the Redskins offense. It's nice to finally see an increased commitment level out of Kelly, but it's likely too little too late for his Redskins career. He's not a darling of the coaching staff.

Comcast Sports Washington's Rich Tandler doesn't believe Malcolm Kelly will make the Redskins' 2011 roster.

"Doesn't seem to be a Shanny-type player, think he's out," writes Tandler. We'd also point to Kelly's inability to separate and stay healthy, in addition to the Redskins' three rookie draft picks used on wide receivers. It's pretty clear they're ready to move on. The 51st overall choice in the 2008 draft, Kelly has just 28 career catches without a touchdown.

Despite spending the entire 2010 season on injured reserve, WR Malcolm Kelly (knees, hamstring) stayed with the Redskins all year.

This isn't usually the case for I.R. players, but Kelly hoped to make a positive impression on Mike Shanahan. Still just 24, Kelly has one year left on his rookie deal. He needs to show he can stay healthy first, but the receiver-needy Skins should give him every opportunity to succeed in 2011.

Redskins placed WR Malcolm Kelly (hamstring) on injured reserve, ending his season.

Kelly is likely to be released with an injury settlement while fellow 2008 second-rounder Devin Thomas remains mired as a third-stringer. Once considered a future starter, Kelly's career is at a crossroads. He can't stay healthy, and multiple procedures to his knees have sapped his speed. He should be dropped in all leagues.

The Washington Post calls an injury settlement "the most likely result" for the Redskins and Malcolm Kelly.

Coach Mike Shanahan is a firm believer that players must practice to be effective in games. Kelly hasn't been able to do so, and aggravated his hamstring pull in camp on Monday. Injured reserve is the next likeliest option.

Redskins WR Malcolm Kelly aggravated his hamstring after returning to practice Monday.

Trainers told coach Mike Shanahan that it was a "pretty good pull," which means Kelly is done for the preseason. At this point the odds are against his making the final roster.

Malcolm Kelly (hamstring) finally returned to the practice field on Monday.

Kelly was originally injured at Donovan McNabb's passing camp in July. He's missed nearly a full month after re-injuring the hamstring on the first day of training camp. This week's work will go a long way in determining whether he makes the final roster.

Malcolm Kelly will attempt to practice on his balky hamstring on Monday in an effort to play in Thursday's preseason finale.

This might represent Kelly's last chance at a roster spot. The injury-prone third-year receiver has been sidelined since July. Kelly was able to run on a treadmill last Friday and ran a few pass routes over the weekend.

Malcolm Kelly (hamstring) has been ruled out for Friday's game against the Jets.

Kelly has finally graduated to running routes, but he's now missed almost four weeks with the injury. He's not a lock to make the Redskins' final roster.

Malcolm Kelly (hamstring) remains in the mix for playing time despite missing all of camp and both preseason games.

There's certainly playing time to be had at receiver for the 'Skins, but Kelly will really have to come on strong to make an impression. We still have our doubts that he'll even wind up making the team.

Malcolm Kelly missed practice Thursday because of a traffic court date.

Kelly was facing three misdemeanor traffic charges in Northern Virginia, including erratic lane change, not having a driver's license and failing to obey a traffic sign. It's not a big deal, but it won't help Kelly's chances of making the team. He's been struggling with a hamstring injury for all of camp.
