Ex-Steelers WR Limas Sweed signed with the Ottawa Redblacks of the Canadian Football League.
Sweed, the 53rd pick in the 2008 draft, was cut by the Steelers before the 2011 season. In 20 career games, he caught seven passes for 69 yards. He's been bouncing around the CFL for the past three years. Sweed's NFL career was derailed by mental miscues and a torn Achilles' tendon. He turned 29 in December. Tue, Feb 11, 2014 02:57:00 PM

According to the Newark Star-Ledger, ''it would be a shock'' if the Giants signed free agent WR Limas Sweed.

Sweed has struggled as a tryout player, and almost certainly won't be offered a contract. Still just six months removed from shoulder surgery, the 27-year-old Sweed insists he's fully healthy and has no plans to retire.

Free agent WR Limas Sweed is participating in Giants rookie minicamp this weekend.

Before taking the field, Sweed also revealed to reporters that he recently worked out with the Bears and Bengals. Sweed was the 53rd overall pick in the 2008 draft. His career has been derailed by mental errors and an Achilles' tear.

The Bengals worked out free agent WR Limas Sweed on Friday.

The 53rd pick in the 2008 draft, Sweed flamed out quickly with the Steelers after a poor rookie season and torn Achilles'. He was out of football in 2011. If Sweed is back to 100 percent, he's worth one last shot at age 27.

Steelers waived WR Limas Sweed from injured reserve.

After three-plus ugly years in Pittsburgh, Sweed is free. His shoulder injury was not expected to be major, so it will be interesting to see if any team takes a flier. The No. 53 overall pick in the 2008 draft is 6-foot-4 and had good speed when he broke into the league.

Steelers waived/injured WR Limas Sweed.

Sweed was dealing with a minor shoulder sprain, but he had no shot of making the team from jump street. Once the Steelers signed Jerricho Cotchery, there wasn't much reason to keep Sweed around. The 2008 No. 53 overall pick has been a major bust, catching just seven passes in his three years as a Steeler.

Steelers WR Limas Sweed (Achilles surgery) claims to be "110 percent" physically and mentally entering training camp.

Sweed is already trying to convince the coaching staff that Plaxico Burress isn't needed because he has plenty of size. It's not a very convincing argument. Sweed has been a full-blown bust for three years, and he's not a good bet to return to pre-injury form coming off a torn Achilles.

Limas Sweed is no better than sixth on the Steelers' wideout depth chart, according to ESPN's James Walker.

Sweed will get a shot to knock the coaches' socks off in training camp, but the odds of that happening are slim. He's been a bust ever since being a second-round pick in 2008 and is now coming off a torn Achilles tendon. We wouldn't expect Sweed to be on the Steelers when the season rolls around.

Coach Mike Tomlin insists the Steelers have not given up on WR Limas Sweed.

Chalk this one up to coach-speak. Tomlin conceded that Sweed's competition for a roster spot is getting "stiff." The 2008 draft bust is also entering a contract year while recovering from a torn Achilles tendon. He's facing long odds.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Ed Bouchette does not believe Limas Sweed will play for the Steelers in 2011.

"They'll give him a shot, but I don't think you'll see him in a Steelers uniform in 2011," says Bouchette. Sweed is not only coming back from a torn Achilles, he's also caught in a numbers game with Emmanuel Sanders and Antonio Brown emerging.

Limas Sweed (Achilles surgery) still believes he is in the Steelers' plans for 2011.

We haven't posted an update on Sweed since last May, which is an indication of how relevant the beat writers consider him at this point. Sweed is signed through 2011, but the emergence of Emmanuel Sanders and Antonio Brown has made him an afterthought in Pittsburgh. He could use a fresh start elsewhere.

Steelers placed WR Limas Sweed on injured reserve with a torn Achilles' tendon, ending his season.

Sweed suffered the torn Achilles' a week ago in practice. With just seven career catches in 20 games, the 2008 second-rounder's early career has been notable only for a serious of miscues and questionable effort. Sweed's 2009 season also ended early, reportedly due to severe depression. Sweed is signed through 2011, but he doesn't have a future in Pittsburgh.

Limas Sweed (Achilles) is likely done for the season, confirms the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

No surprise here at all. A torn Achilles is a serious injury that often takes at least a year to recover from. Sweed's career path needs to make a U-turn quickly if he's ever going to live up to his second-round draft pick status.

Steelers WR Limas Sweed underwent surgery Monday to repair a torn Achilles' tendon, jeopardizing his 2010 season.

Though some recover from Achilles' surgeries earlier than others, the injury will at least land Sweed on the PUP list to start the year, and the odds are heavily against him playing a down in 2010. Players that return too quickly from Achilles' tears also tend to suffer setbacks, or injuries to other lower-body parts. Sweed has developed extremely slowly since being drafted in the 2008 second round. It's safe to label him a total bust at this point.

Steelers doctors are expected to get word Monday on whether Limas Sweed's Achilles' injury is season ending.

NFL Network's Jason La Canfora confirms that the team is fearing the worst for its former second-round pick. Sweed was going to enter camp on the roster bubble anyway, but his talent gave him serious upside as a reserve.
