Redskins waived DE Kentwan Balmer.
The 49ers' first-round pick in the 2008 draft, Balmer has not appeared in a game since the 2011 season. He went AWOL from Redskins camp last July and spent all of 2013 on the reserve/left squad list. Balmer is still only 27. Fri, May 30, 2014 05:05:00 PM

Redskins DE Kentwan Balmer has been located by the team.

Balmer cleaned out his hotel room and went AWOL from camp nearly two weeks ago. The team was recently able to get in touch with him by phone, but no reason for his disappearance was given. Balmer remains on the reserve/left squad list.

Coach Mike Shanahan assumes that DE Kentwan Balmer doesn't want to play football anymore.

Balmer has gone AWOL from training camp, cleaning out his hotel room, leaving nothing but a Redskins sweatshirt. LB Lorenzo Alexander said Balmer simply "decided to leave." The organization can't get in touch with him or his agent. Balmer also went AWOL while with the Niners during 2010 training camp.

Redskins DE Kentwan Balmer has been AWOL from training camp the past two days.

Coach Mike Shanahan has no clue as to Balmer's whereabouts, confirming that the absence was unexcused. "Hopefully it's nothing very serious," Shanahan said. This is nothing new for the 2008 first-rounder. Balmer was traded by the 49ers after going AWOL in August of 2010.

Redskins declared DE Kentwan Balmer, RB Roy Helu, LB Markus White, C Erik Cook, TE Rob Myers, WR David Anderson, and DE Doug Worthington inactive for Week 16 against the Vikings.

Evan Royster will start but could lose carries to Ryan Torain with Helu (toe, ankle) ruled out. Worthington and Myers were promoted from the practice squad on Tuesday to replace Dominique Byrd and LaRon Landry (Achilles, injured reserve).

Redskins signed DL Kentwan Balmer and CB D.J. Johnson.

Balmer lasted just a week with the Panthers after being claimed off waivers in late August. He was reportedly out of shape at the time. The Redskins can afford to take a flier on the 2008 first-rounder now that their season is circling the drain.

Panthers waived DL Kentwan Balmer.

That was quick. Balmer was just claimed a week ago. The experiment at three-technique tackle predictably did not go well, reportedly because Balmer "wasn't in very good shape." The Broncos and Redskins also claimed Balmer a week ago.

Panthers claimed DL Kentwan Balmer off waivers from the Seahawks.

Though two organizations have already thrown in the towel on the 29th overall pick in the 2008 draft, the Broncos and Redskins also put in claims. According to ESPN's John Clayton, the Panthers intend to move Balmer inside as a three-technique tackle. He'll compete for snaps with Corvey Irvin and Terrell McClain.

Seahawks waived DL Kentwan Balmer.

Balmer was an 11-game starter at left defensive end last season after Red Bryant's year-ending knee injury. A huge disappointment as the 29th overall pick in the 2008 draft, Balmer has struggled mightily as a run defender and provided nothing as a pass rusher. Two NFL franchises have now given up on him.

According to Pro Football Focus, Seahawks DL Kentwan Balmer was the NFL's least productive edge pass rusher in 2010.

Balmer created just 12 quarterback disruptions (zero of which were sacks) on the 271 snaps he was deployed as a pass rusher on last season. The 2008 first-round pick will be a candidate for release this summer.

Newly acquired Seahawks DL Kentwan Balmer paid the 49ers $800,000 to facilitate his trade out of San Francisco.

It's the part of Balmer's rookie signing bonus the 49ers had been seeking. Balmer did preserve $800,000 in future base salaries. It was widely thought that the 49ers wanted to rid themselves of Balmer, but it's now apparent that he wanted to end the union just as badly. He'll fight for a backup job in Seattle.

Seahawks acquired DL Kentwan Balmer from the 49ers in exchange for a future sixth-round pick.

The Niners did well to salvage a decent late-round pick for the AWOL former first-round draft bust. The Seahawks had a need for depth up front, and Balmer is versatile enough to fill in as a backup at the very least. The 29th overall pick in the 2008 draft never started a game in two seasons with the 49ers.

NFL Network's Jason La Canfora reports that the 49ers have placed DL Kentwan Balmer on the trade block.

La Canfora passes along whispers of interest in the underachieving, AWOL lineman, with San Francisco potentially salvaging a sixth- or seventh-round pick for the draft bust. Balmer certainly looks the part at 6'5/315, and could appeal to some 3-4 teams as a five-technique defensive end. It's just never a good sign when a player is still a "project" entering his third season.

The 49ers have sent AWOL DL Kentwan Balmer a letter threatening to place him an the Roster Exempt List if he doesn't report to the team within five days.

The team could also place Balmer on reserve/Did Not Report, a list that could end his season. Balmer hasn't shown any urgency to report to the 49ers.

The 49ers will reportedly attempt to collect at least $960,000 from AWOL DL Kentwan Balmer.

Balmer's signing bonus was $1.6 million after signing a five-year, $8 million deal back in 2008. He's never started a game in two seasons while rarely leaving the bench. The Niners believe he's in violation of his contract since he's now absent without leave. It's highly doubtful that he'll ever suit up for the 49ers again.
