Bills CB/KR Leodis McKelvin underwent groin surgery on January 10.

He received a 3-4 month recovery timetable. The Bills must be confident in McKelvin's health, considering GM Buddy Nix just locked him up on a four-year, $20 million deal, with $7.5 million guaranteed. McKelvin will be fully recovered by training camp. He'll face competition to be the starter opposite Steph Gilmore.

Bills re-signed CB Leodis McKelvin to a four-year, $20 million contract.

McKelvin was the most explosive return specialist in football last season -- Jacoby Jones included -- but the money here is surprising and may indicate the Bills envision McKelvin as a 2013 defensive contributor. He's long struggled in pass coverage and with his ball skills. Turning 28 before the season, McKelvin will probably compete with Aaron Williams to start at left corner opposite RCB Stephon Gilmore. The LCB position figures to remain an exploitable weakness if Mario Williams and Mark Anderson can't generate better pass rush.

The Bills and free agent CB/KR Leodis McKelvin are in the "beginning stages" of contract talks.

The two sides will meet again Friday before teams can start legally tampering at midnight. McKelvin has been inconsistent on defense, but he's a potent return man. He led the NFL with 18.7 yards per punt return last year, bringing two to the house. The former first-round pick would draw plenty of interest.

McKelvin has already established himself as one of the league's top return men, but he started just four games at corner this season. "Most definitely we'll be considering the positions I'm playing," he said. "That's what I'm looking for. [The] return game is always going to be there, but I'm going to be looking for a chance to play on defense." The Bills need to aim higher as they search for a competent starter across from exciting prospect Stephon Gilmore.

Burned often outside his first four NFL seasons, the Bills are hoping McKelvin's move inside to the slot will kickstart his career in a contract year. "Leodis has played really, really well at nickel," said Gailey. "It would be hard to move him out of there." With McKelvin entrenched in the slot, Aaron Williams will be the Week 1 starter at left corner with Stephon Gilmore at RCB.

Terrence McGee can't kick his knee injury, and Justin Rogers is behind McKelvin at this point. Coach Chan Gailey is confident the position switch can jump start McKelvin's career. "He has great quickness and great speed and the only trouble he has had is with the deep ball and you don’t get many deep balls in the slot," said Gailey. "You’re trying to let him do what he does best."

"Last year I didn't play the nickel," McKelvin said. "I feel like I should be on the field. ... I know I can play on the field in the nickel situations." McKelvin is technically competing for a starting job, but this is a strong indication the Bills don't expect him to beat out No. 10 pick Stephon Gilmore. Excelling in the slot could be McKelvin's best shot at saving his roster spot.

The Bills are giving former first-round bust Leodis McKelvin a legitimate shot at a starting cornerback job.

McKelvin is running with the first-team defense at OTAs, and the Bills are going to make rookie Stephon Gilmore beat him out for the starting right corner job. McKelvin has been a flop as a pro, struggling more often than not in coverage and showing poor ball skills. If Gilmore does unseat him -- and we expect the first-round pick to -- McKelvin could go on the trade block in training camp.

The Bills are expected to keep six cornerbacks, which confirms that Leodis McKelvin is on the roster bubble.

Aaron Williams and rookie Stephon Gilmore are the favorites to start. Terrence McGee is likely to return in a nickel corner capacity. Drayton Florence is due $4 million this season, so it's fair to wonder if the 31-year-old's roster spot is in jeopardy. No. 124 pick Ron Brooks is considered a lock to make the team, which means Leodis McKelvin and Justin Rogers currently sit sixth and seventh on the depth chart. Our guess is that McKelvin is the odd man out.

Coach Chan Gailey admitted at the Combine Thursday that the Bills have been disappointed in former first-round pick Leodis McKelvin.

McKelvin is entering the final year of his rookie deal. "He just hasn't made the plays when he's had the opportunity," Gailey said. "And it seems like every time he's in there, if a ball gets tipped and goes to a guy, it's the guy he's on." The Bills may be open to trading McKelvin this offseason, because they don't intend to extend his contract. His 2012 salary is $1,518,750.
