Bengals signed QB Josh Johnson to a two-year contract.
Johnson worked out for the Bengals last week. It's Cincinnati's first outside-the-organization free-agent signing of the offseason. Johnson spent last summer with the 49ers, but he was part of their final cuts. He was then signed by the Browns in Week 17 and played one snap, losing a fumble on a sack. The Bengals likely aren't done adding quarterbacks behind Andy Dalton. Mar 21 - 9:15 PM

The Bengals worked out free agent QB Josh Johnson on Thursday.

Johnson was out of the league until the Browns picked him up as an emergency backup heading into Week 17 last season. He played one snap and was strip-sacked. Johnson has a good arm and has ties to Bengals OC Jay Gruden from their Tampa Bay days. He's also very athletic with a 4.55 forty time.

The Sacramento Bee suggests the 49ers as a possible landing spot for free agent QB Josh Johnson.

Johnson spent last offseason with the Niners before getting dumped at final cuts. Now that Alex Smith is gone and Colin Kaepernick is the starter, they could be looking for an athletic backup and cheap upgrade on Scott Tolzien. Johnson would fit the bill.

Browns signed QB Josh Johnson.

Brandon Weeden (shoulder) is almost certainly out for the finale. Look for Johnson to back up Colt McCoy and Thaddeus Lewis against the Steelers. Johnson was the No. 2 free agent quarterback available on Rotoworld's list of free agents, behind only David Garrard. The former Jim Harbaugh project has been on street since the Niners released him at camp's final cuts this year.

Seahawks worked out free agent QB Josh Johnson on Tuesday.

It's Johnson's first known workout since being among the 49ers' final cuts at the end of August. He later signed on with the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the United Football League in mid-September, but the league was forced to suspend operation shortly after. Seattle is likely just doing their due diligence.

Free agent QB Josh Johnson has signed with the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the United Football League.

The former Bucs and 49ers quarterback ranks third on Rotoworld's list of real-life NFL free agent quarterbacks. Johnson was cut by San Francisco in August in favor of Scott Tolzien and generated no looks with other clubs. With UFL camps opening up this coming week, we'd expect several out-of-work NFLers to latch on with the young league.

49ers waived or released QB Josh Johnson, LBs Ikaika Alama-Francis, Michael Wilhoite, Eric Bakhtiari, Kenny Rowe, Cam Johnson and Joe Holland, G/T Derek Hall, DTs Tony Jerod-Eddie and Matthew Masifilo, CB Anthony Mosley, TE Kyle Nelson, G/T Al Netter, OTs Kenny Wiggins and Mike Person, WR Nathan Palmer and S Michael Thomas.

In a mild upset, Scott Tolzien beat out Johnson for No. 3 duties, though Rotoworld's Evan Silva predicted Thursday Johnson might be cut loose. One of the symbols of the Matt Millen era in Detroit, Alama-Francis made just one tackle in five games for the Dolphins last season.

Josh Johnson was relegated to mop-up duty as the fourth-string quarterback in the 49ers' exhibition opener.

Johnson suggested that the order of appearance in the game reflected the training camp depth chart. "Since I've gotten here, it's pretty much been that order," Johnson said. Colin Kaepernick appears to have a firm grip on the No. 2 job, and the coaching staff remains high on Scott Tolzien as the developmental QB. Johnson is on the roster bubble.

49ers signed QB Josh Johnson to a two-year contract.

The Johnson-Jim Harbaugh reunion was bound to happen. After Harbaugh mentored Johnson to a remarkable 43-to-1 TD:INT ratio as a University of San Diego (Division I-AA) senior, the coach declared him the best quarterback in college football. Johnson will likely back up Alex Smith to start the season, with Colin Kaepernick remaining in the developmental third-string role. Smith now has two backups with arguably more talent than him.

Free agent QB Josh Johnson will visit the Redskins on Wednesday.

It will be the first visit for one of the better backups left on the market. Johnson is also drawing interest from the 49ers. If he signs with the Redskins, it will mean the end of John Beck's time in Washington.

The 49ers and Redskins have expressed interest in free agent QB Josh Johnson.

Johnson believes a visit to the 49ers facility could go down this week, though it's not clear how an Alex Smith re-signing would affect his standing with the team. Though he has a strong arm and top-notch running ability, Johnson has completed just 54.2 percent of his 177 NFL passes for a 57.7 passer rating.

SI's Peter King believes the 49ers could sign free agent Josh Johnson as a "bridge" to Colin Kaepernick if they fail to sign free agents Peyton Manning and Alex Smith.

The Bucs' backup the past three seasons, Johnson played for Niners coach Jim Harbaugh at the University of San Diego. Johnson has not posted good numbers in the NFL, completing 96-of-177 passes for 1,042 yards, five touchdowns and 10 interceptions, but his familiarity with Harbaugh would certainly make him an option for the 49ers. Johnson has not been formally connected to any teams since the beginning of free agency.

CSN Bay Area's Matt Maicco expects the 49ers to make a run at free agent QB Josh Johnson if Alex Smith remains unsigned when the market opens on March 13.

Smith and the 49ers appear to be in a contract stalemate, with Smith seeking a five-year deal and the club only offering three. Maiocco suggests Johnson as a placeholder in front of 2011 second-round pick Colin Kaepernick. Both young quarterbacks are highly athletic, potentially making for a smooth transition if Johnson held the reigns for a bit before ceding way to Kaepernick.

The Denver Post suggests Chad Henne and Josh Johnson as free agent quarterbacks most likely to be brought in as "competition" for Tim Tebow.

The Post's Mike Klis isn't citing sources, so this appears to be more of a guessing game than a report. Johnson makes sense in the Tim Tebow option offense, though Henne is a better fit if the coaching staff opts against molding the offense to Tebow's game. Klis rounds out the top five Broncos fits with Jason Campbell, Shaun Hill, and David Garrard.

CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco considers free agent Josh Johnson a "strong possibility" for the 49ers to pursue on the open market.

Niners coach Jim Harbaugh has publicly referred to Johnson as a "beloved son" after coaching him in college. Harbaugh mentored Johnson so well that he leaped from non-scholarship D-IAA to the NFL, a rare accomplishment. Johnson, who turns 26 in May, would be an athletic backup behind Alex Smith.
