Rams placed LE Chris Long (ankle surgery) on injured reserve/designated to return.
He'll be first eligible to return in eight weeks. It's the last thing the embattled Rams need, as the defensive line is one of their only true strengths. They still boast impressive depth opposite all-world RE Robert Quinn, however. William Hayes and Eugene Sims are the next men up. Sep 11 - 4:44 PM

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Rams LE Chris Long will undergo ankle surgery and miss 8-10 weeks.

Long needs surgery on his left ankle and will be placed on short-term I.R. He got rolled up on a third-quarter run play against the Vikings. The Rams are deep on the defensive line, but that's about all they have on that side of the ball. William Hayes and Eugene Sims will fill in opposite Robert Quinn. With Long out, opposing offensive lines can turn their focus to stopping All-Pro Quinn.

Rams LE Chris Long didn't seem very optimistic on his ankle injury following Sunday's loss to the Vikings.

Long went down in the third quarter and did not return. "We're still doing tests on Chris. Hopefully we'll have more information," coach Jeff Fisher said Monday. Will Hayes is Long's backup on a deep Rams' defensive line.

Rams LE Chris Long exited Sunday's Week 1 opener against the Vikings with a left ankle injury and is doubtful to return.

Long got rolled up on a third-quarter run play. Eugene Sims and William Hayes will fill in opposite All-Pro RE Robert Quinn.

Rams LE Chris Long restructured his contract to create $2 million in cap space.

Long didn't take a pay cut. He's simply converting some of his $13.2 million base salary into a bonus so it can be pro-rated over the final three years of his contract. Long has averaged 10-plus sacks over the past four seasons.
Sep 4 - 1:20 PM

Rams LE Chris Long was ejected from St. Louis' Week 7 game against the Panthers.

A third-quarter melee broke out, but Long was the only player spotted throwing a punch. Long had two tackles, one for a loss, before departing. He'll be back in Week 8.

Rams LE Chris Long (hip) is expected to play on Sunday versus Atlanta.

Long popped up on the injury report and missed Friday's practice. It was likely more of a rest day for the veteran. Long will go up against -- and likely feast on -- Falcons RT Lamar Holmes. Holmes gave up a sack, two quarterback hits, and five hurries last week against the pass rush-starved Saints.

Rams LE Chris Long (hip) missed Friday's practice and is listed as questionable for Week 2.

There are indications Long was given a rest day and he is not in danger of missing Sunday's tilt with Atlanta. "Chris is fine. He's OK," said teammate William Hayes, who would start if Long couldn't play. "He just needed that day off, just to relax." Keep Long in IDP lineups versus Falcons RT Lamar Holmes.

Rams LE Chris Long restructured his contract, creating $4.5 million in cap space.

The Rams were right up against the salary cap with less than $1 million in room, so the move was necessary. Long converted $6 million of his $13.25 million 2013 base salary into a roster bonus. The 28-year-old former No. 2 overall pick signed a five-year, $60.31 million deal last July.

According to Pro Football Focus, Chris Long has recorded ten QB hurries and two QB hits through the first two games this season.

Despite not having any sacks, his 12 pressures show that Long is getting to the QB. Long could be in store for a big day on Sunday as he faces off against Bears RT Gabe Carimi, who has yielded 11 QB pressures so far this season. Long is Rotoworld's No. 8 DL for Week 3.

Rams agreed to terms with LE Chris Long on a four-year, $50 million extension through 2016.

Although details are not yet available, FOX Sports reporter Jay Glazer characterized the money as "huge." Long, the second pick in the 2008 draft, has panned out unlike many of St. Louis' pre-Fisher and Snead selections. The 27-year-old Long's sack total has increased in each of his NFL seasons, and he topped out with a team-high 13.0 in 2011. Long could stand to improve his run defense, but he's quietly developed into a premier NFL edge rusher.

Final-year escalators from his rookie contract shot Rams LE Chris Long's 2012 base salary from $2.56 million to $10.31 million.

As has reported, Long's 2012 cap figure is a whopping $18.1 million. The Rams could clear quite a bit of cap space if they signed Long to an extension. Long, who turns 27 later this month, has increased his sack total in each of his four NFL seasons. He set a career high with 13 in 2011.

Rams DE Chris Long (questionable, ankle) is a game-time decision for Sunday's game against the Niners.

Long leads the team with 10.0 sacks and would be replaced by Eugene Sims, but Long has said that he expects to play. He will attack the right side of the Niners' offensive line, which has struggled mightily without RG Adam Snyder (hamstring). Snyder is probable to play, but has some risk of an in-game aggravation.

Beat writer Jim Thomas believes that Chris Long's move to left end helped spark the 2010 breakout.

Long, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2009 draft, struggled badly as a rookie. But after Leonard Little retired, Long shifted to left end and went off for 8 1/2 sacks, 16 quarterback hits and 21 quarterback pressures in 2010. Long is now entrenched as the playmaking strong-side end for the Rams and has nice IDP upside.

Beat writer Jim Thomas referred to DE Chris Long's 2010 campaign as a "breakout year."

Long racked up a career-high nine sacks, 21 quarterback hits and 16 quarterback pressures. As the No. 2 overall pick in the 2008 draft, he should be merely scratching the surface. There will be even more IDP upside next season, as Long has room to take another step forward.
