Free agent OT Jeff Otah is training with former Saints and Browns C LeCharles Bentley in an effort to improve his conditioning and get back in the NFL.
If Otah is truly motivated to turn his career around at age 26, he certainly could help a team as a starting right tackle. He could probably even start at left tackle for some clubs. Otah is at Bentley's "O-Line Academy" in Cleveland, trying to rebuild himself. "I believe he's definitely going to be ready this season," Bentley said of Otah. "At what point in the season, I'm not sure." Wed, Aug 22, 2012 02:20:00 PM

The player rep for OT Jeff Otah maintains the free agent will "definitely" play again in the NFL.

The Charlotte Observer confirms Otah had a setback with his knee in training camp. "He's not currently ready to play today, but he will be there in the future," said the agent. "One thousand percent" committed to playing this season, Otah plans to travel to Ohio to work out in LeCharles Bentley's O-Line Academy before attempting to sign with another NFL team. It's a positive sign for a player whose effort was often questioned in Carolina.

Panthers released OT Jeff Otah.

Although Otah couldn't pass a physical in New York or Carolina, he won't receive an injury settlement because his knee and back ailments are considered existing injuries. A dominant run-blocker early in his career, Otah's play had fallen off and his passion for football questioned while missing 31 of the past 35 games. If he goes on to pass a physical and show an increased commitment level, the 26-year-old has the potential to help a team later in the season.

A team source confirmed to the Charlotte Observer that the Panthers will not retain RT Jeff Otah, despite his voided trade to the Jets.

Otah will be shipped back out of town, either waived or traded if Carolina finds a taker. "We tried to make a deal. Unfortunately, they didn't want it," coach Ron Rivera said. "So now we're back with Jeff. We'll see him tomorrow. (GM) Marty (Hurney) and I will sit down and we'll visit and we'll go from there."

Jeff Otah (knee, back) is reportedly "unlikely" to remain with the Panthers after his trade to the Jets was voided.

The Panthers have already set the wheels in motion to turn the right tackle job over to Byron Bell. "There were (teams interested in Otah) before, so I don't know," GM Marty Hurney said, suggesting he will continue to work the phones.

Jeff Otah (knee, back) will report to Panthers camp on Wednesday after his trade to the Jets was voided.

Otah will meet with team officials and trainers to determine the next step in his relationship with the organization. According to CBS Sports' Jason LaCanfora, Otah could be given more time to pass a physical and conditioning test. The alternative is placing him on the camp PUP list.

Jets voided their acquisition of OT Jeff Otah, returning him to the Panthers.

Otah, who has chronic knee issues, had to pass a physical by Tuesday afternoon for his trade to become official. The Panthers can now trade him, grant him his release or place him on the active/PUP list. The Jets get their seventh-round pick back. The Bears were believed to be interested in Otah before his ill-fated trade to New York. The move raises questions about Otah's NFL future, and the Jets' player evaluation skills. Expect RT Wayne Hunter to be coach Rex Ryan's most frequent recipient of praise for the remainder of camp.

Jeff Otah (knee, back) needs to pass a physical by Tuesday or his trade to the Jets will be voided.

Otah, who has chronic knee issues, failed his first physical upon arriving in New York. "It's getting better," he said. "It's not 100 percent, but that's what I'm doing right now." Even if Otah does end up sticking with the Jets, this is a reminder that he can't be trusted to solve their right tackle woes.

A league source tells Profootballtalk.com that Jeff Otah (knee, back) will be sent back to the Panthers if he doesn't pass his Jets physical within a week.

Otah was placed on active/PUP Wednesday after failing his initial physical. Per PFT's Darin Gantt, the Jets-Panthers trade was contingent on Otah passing a physical "in the next seven days, or else he goes back to Carolina." The Jets would then get back their conditional seventh-round pick. If Otah was returned to Carolina, GM Marty Hurney would likely look either to trade him again, or cut him.

New Jets OT Jeff Otah failed his physical to open training camp and was placed on active/PUP.

Otah is presumably still not fully healed from last year's knee injury, and he also has a bad history when it comes to his back. It's fair to wonder if he might be damaged goods. Otah will be eligible to practice when/if he gets healthy.

According to Profootballtalk's Darin Gantt, members of the Panthers' organization "wondered if (Jeff) Otah cared anymore" before his Monday trade to the Jets.

"If Jets doctors have a cure for soft, they have a steal," quipped Gantt, a longtime Panthers beat reporter. Otah battled back and knee injuries and a concussion the past two seasons, costing him all but four games. It sounds like injuries haven't been the only factor keeping Otah from his potential, however. The Jets and Tony Sparano will attempt to motivate Otah in training camp. From the Jets' perspective, the deal has boom-or-bust potential.

Jets acquired OT Jeff Otah from the Panthers in exchange for a conditional seventh-round draft choice in 2013.

Fare thee well, Wayne Hunter. The Panthers ran out of patience with Otah's continual knee woes, but he represents a potentially massive upgrade on turnstile Hunter if healthy. That's a rather large "if," however, after Otah appeared in just four games the past two seasons. He missed time in Carolina's offseason program with knee soreness, but is expected to be 100 percent for camp. Still just 26, the No. 19 overall pick of the 2008 draft has the potential to be one of the better right tackles in football if he can get and stay healthy.

According to Pro Football Weekly, the Panthers are running out of patience with RT Jeff Otah (knee).

Otah is owed $2.35 million in the final year of his rookie contract, and is coming off knee surgeries in the past two seasons. Per PFW's Dan Parr, there are "sources inside the organization" that aren't overly optimistic about his chances of returning to full health. Otah is expected to report for training camp, and will compete with Byron Bell for the starting right tackle job.

Panthers GM Marty Hurney expects RT Jeff Otah (knee) to be ready for training camp.

"I think he’s OK," Hurney said. "Just trying to be cautious with him and getting it stronger." Otah — who's missed 31 of the Panthers' past 35 games — was held out of minicamp after his left knee swelled up, but an MRI revealed no structural damage. Provided Otah can stay on the field, he should win his "competition" with Byron Bell.

An MRI on Panthers RT Jeff Otah's left knee came back negative.

Otah put a scare into the Panthers last week when his knee swelled up. He's missed 31 of the past 35 regular-season games due to injury and has undergone two separate knee surgeries. Otah may sit out the rest of OTAs and minicamp as a precaution.
