Redskins signed DE Phillip Merling, NT Chigbo Anunoby, DL Dom Hamilton, FB Eric Kettani, CB Korey Lindsey, and TE Deangelo Peterson to reserve/future contracts.

Merling is the headliner as the 32nd overall pick in the 2008 draft. He was a colossal bust in Miami, compiling just 66 tackles and 3.5 sacks in four years. Merling landed in Green Bay last spring, but lasted just three games before being released.

Packers released DE Phillip Merling.

Merling was the odd man out after Mike Neal was activated from the suspended list. A former second-round pick by the Dolphins in 2008, Merling recorded just two tackles in very limited action with Green Bay this season.

Packers signed DE Phillip Merling, formerly of the Dolphins.

The No. 32 pick in the 2008 draft, Merling was released last month after combining for just seven tackles over the past two seasons. He hasn't been the same since a 2010 Achilles injury. At age 27, Merling is worth a roll of the dice for a team seeking an upgrade at right end in Dom Capers' 3-4 defense.

Dolphins released DE Phillip Merling.

Merling has been a bust since the Dolphins drafted him 32nd overall in 2008, but the move is somewhat surprising after they re-signed him to a one-year, $1.26 million deal last month. Merling's salary was not guaranteed, however, and he reportedly skipped voluntary workouts. Limited to five games and three tackles by an Achilles injury in 2010, Merling was active just 10 times in 2011. He hasn't notched a sack since 2009. Merling is still young and was regarded highly enough coming out of Clemson to get another shot soon.

Dolphins re-signed restricted free agent DE Phillip Merling to a one-year, $1.26 million contract.

Merling has been a bust as the former 32nd overall pick in the draft, but the Fins will give him one more shot to make an impact in 2012 training camp. His salary is not guaranteed. Merling turns 27 in April. While there's some feeling that Miami's move from a 3-4 to 4-3 scheme could rejuvenate Merling, his continued recovery from a torn Achilles' has sapped his explosiveness.

Dolphins DE Phillip Merling is scheduled for restricted free agency this offseason.

Merling's free agency status was a bit murky because he's been in the NFL for four years, which would ordinarily make him unrestricted. But Merling spent 11 games on 2010 on the reserve/non-football injury list, falling one game short of an "accrued year." The Dolphins will easily be able to retain Merling with an original pick tender. He was a second-rounder in 2008.

Dolphins DE Phillip Merling has shown decreased explosiveness in training camp after missing much of last season with an Achilles' injury.

Merling is running as the No. 5 end behind Randy Starks, Kendall Langford, Tony McDaniel, and Jared Odrick. The Miami Herald suggests Merling could be on the bubble, or perhaps traded if the right offer comes along. Defensive end is the Dolphins' deepest position. Merling has one tackle this preseason.

Phillip Merling, Jared Odrick, Randy Starks and Kendall Langford will likely compete for one starting defensive end spot in 2011, according to the Sun-Sentinel.

The Dolphins have a hole at defense end and are expected to also be searching for Paul Soliai's replacement at defensive tackle. It's possible Merling could hold that spot down in nickel sets, but both spots figure to be filled by some kind of committee.

Phillip Merling played about 15 snaps in his first game off Achilles' surgery.

Merling has made a remarkable recovery as he went under the knife just 4 1/2 months ago. He played defensive tackle in the nickel and saw some time at defensive end in the base defense. Most importantly, Merling came out of the game feeling healthy.

Dolphins activated DE Phillip Merling (Achilles) from the Reserve/Non-Football Injury List.

Merling isn't ready for game action just yet, but he's made an impressive recovery from a July Achilles' tendon tear. The Dolphins apparently remain high on his talent, but he's not going to be an impact player down the stretch.

Dolphins DE Phillip Merling practiced Monday for the first time since tearing his left Achilles tendon in July.

Merling is on the reserve/non-football injury list and the team has eight days to decide whether he's healthy enough to be placed on the 53-man roster. The former second-round pick hasn't done a lot in his two years with the team and doesn't figure to be a difference-maker down the stretch if activated.

The Dolphins stated Tuesday that felony aggravated battery charges against DE Phillip Merling have been dropped.

Merling was arrested in late May and accused of hitting his pregnant girlfriend in the face. With the charges dropped, the first-time offender of the league's personal conduct policy is unlikely to face suspension.

Dolphins DE Phillip Merling (Achilles) has reportedly been telling friends he is set to be activated to the 53-man roster.

Since August, Merling has been on the non-football injury list. The NFI allows a player to return at midseason, and Merling has been jogging lightly for a month. He's not going to be ready to play in the next couple of weeks, but it looks like the Dolphins want to have him on hand for December and possibly January.

Dolphins placed DE Phillip Merling on the non-football injury list with a torn Achilles' tendon.

Players placed on NFI can theoretically return by midseason, but that won't be the case for Merling. The former No. 32 overall pick will return to compete for a roster spot in 2011. Merling's impact to this point has been minimal.
