WLB Jerod Mayo admits the Patriots let Ahmad Bradshaw score on what proved to be the game-winning touchdown of Super Bowl XLVI.
"That’s situational football," Mayo said. "We needed Tommy (Brady) to get the ball and do his thing." Bradshaw attempted to go down at the one-yard line after the sea parted from the Patriots' six with 0:57 remaining, but his momentum carried him into the end zone. Eli Manning later said he was telling Bradshaw to fall down. Had Brady guided the Pats to a game-winning score, Bradshaw's mistake would have been remembered for a long time in New York. Patriots agreed to terms with WLB Jerod Mayo on a five-year contract extension.

The financial details are not yet available. Coming off his first Pro Bowl appearance, Mayo is making just $600,000. He was set to make $750,000 in the final year of his rookie deal in 2012. Third on the Pats with 68 tackles despite missing two games with injury, Mayo has graded out as Pro Football Focus' eighth best 4-3 outside linebacker this season.

Patriots WLB Jerod Mayo (knee) did not play a full complement of snaps in his return to the field Sunday.

Mayo was active for the first time since Week 4, but did not start and ended up with just two tackles. He should quickly ramp back up to an every-down role.

Patriots WLB Jerod Mayo and RT Sebastian Vollmer made the team flight to Pittsburgh, giving them a chance to suit up for Sunday's game against the Steelers.

Both are listed as questionable. Mayo sprained his MCL against the Raiders on October 2 and missed the last two games. Vollmer has been inactive for five of the Patriots' last six contests with a back injury. Josh Barrett (thumb) did not travel with the team and has been downgraded to "out."

Coach Bill Belichick doesn't plan to make a decision on LB Jerod Mayo's (knee) availability for the Steelers game until this weekend.

Mayo has been limited in practice the past two days. "He's trying to do a little bit more each day," said Belichick. "We'll see how that goes today. And then, we'll make a decision on this weekend, based on the whole body of work."

Patriots LB Jerod Mayo (knee) is not expected to be active for Week 6.

Mayo is officially questionable after making a surprise return to practice on Friday, but is expected to remain sidelined until the Patriots return from their Week 7 bye. Gary Guyton and Brandon Spikes should again split snaps in his place against the Cowboys on Sunday.

Patriots LB Jerod Mayo (knee) made a surprising return to practice on Friday.

Mayo's sprained left MCL was expected to keep him out for another month, so he's well ahead of his recovery timetable. While he seems like a long shot to play against the Cowboys just before the bye week, Mayo's quick return to the field is great news for the Patriots' defense going forward.

Multiple sources tell the Boston Herald that Patriots WLB Jerod Mayo's left MCL sprain could cost him as many as six weeks.

Mayo missed three games with this same injury in 2008, but the Pats rushed him back then, and he was ineffective upon return. They may have to exercise more caution this time around. "He’s our top defender," NT Vince Wilfork said of Mayo, who led the NFL in tackles last season. "He’s a top defender in this league." Gary Guyton should be picked up in IDP leagues this week.

Tom Curran of Comcast SportsNet New England reports that Patriots WLB Jerod Mayo will be out for "awhile" after injuring the MCL in his left knee during the team's Week 4 win over the Raiders.

Curran at least says the injury isn't season-ending. Gary Guyton will take over at weak-side linebacker in the interim, and MLB Brandon Spikes could also inherit more snaps. Mayo had recorded 24 tackles in the first four games, to go with a forced fumble. New England's run defense has been below average so far, and will take another hit until Mayo gets back healthy.

Patriots LB Jerod Mayo limped off the field with an apparent left knee injury in the second quarter of Sunday's game against the Raiders.

The Pats' second-leading tackler and top defender needed assistance from trainers to hobble off the field. It looks like he's done for the day. Gary Guyton has come on as his replacement.

Patriots LB Jerod Mayo rushed both off the edge and up the middle in Thursday's preseason game.

Mayo racked up two sacks, three hurries and two passes defended to go with his five total tackles. As the Patriots experiment with different defensive fronts, Mayo is getting moved all over the field and being used as a pass-rusher more. He blitzed three times in the Bucs' first two possessions last night, meaning we could be looking at an epic IDP season.

ESPN analyst Tedy Bruschi said on WEEI Boston Monday that he believes Jerod Mayo can become the best linebacker in football within two years.

After a disappointing 2009 season marred by injuries, Mayo led the NFL in tackles as a third-year player. The 2008 Defensive Rookie of the Year made 175 stops, two sacks, and one forced fumble. Pat Willis and Jon Beason are the only linebackers with as much value in IDP leagues. As for becoming the NFL's best at his position, the 25-year-old Mayo will struggle to bypass Willis.

Patriots ILB Jerod Mayo says the team's player-led workouts last week exceeded his expectations.

"Guys were out there competing and did a good job," said Mayo. "For the most part, guys have been in shape. They came in in shape, everyone’s working hard." He played an integral role in organizing the workouts in Boston. Mayo led the NFL with 175 tackles last season and has emerged as a leader for the Pats.

The Patriots defense has yet to set up any offseason workouts.

Jerod Mayo says they are in the offing, however. "As a captain of the team, I'm going to try to hold everybody accountable and try to do something later on," he said. "It’s all about beating the lockout at this point. Whatever team can beat the lockout has a good chance of success in the upcoming season." Spoken like a true Patriot. Extended lockout or not, the Pats are well positioned to win next season.
