Patriots placed SS Josh Barrett (calf) on injured reserve, ending his season.

It's a little blow to the Patriots' pass defense. Barrett was coming on as an asset next to Patrick Chung, making four starts this season. Former undrafted free agent Sergio Brown is the next man up.

Patriots SS Josh Barrett (thumb) has been downgraded to out for Sunday's game against the Steelers.

The Patriots are giving up an average of 6.2 completions of 20-plus yards per game, and the second-worst Cardinals are well behind them at 5.0 such plays per game. Mike Wallace was our No. 1 WR play before this news, with Antonio Brown and Emmanuel Sanders looking like solid bye week WR3s.

Patriots signed S Josh Barrett to a two-year, $1.75 million contract.

The deal includes a $250K signing bonus. Barrett, 26, was scheduled for restricted free agency after missing all of 2010 with reconstructive shoulder surgery. He's a good bet for a roster spot in 2011, focusing on special teams.

Patriots placed S Josh Barrett (shoulder) on injured reserve, ending his season.

Despite being claimed off waivers at the start of camp, Barrett was never going to play a down for New England due to reconstructive shoulder surgery. The Broncos won't like it, but he'll be back in 2011 to compete for a spot.

Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston believes that S Josh Barrett was claimed off waivers by the Patriots Friday "with the future in mind."

Barrett is scheduled to undergo shoulder surgery, so he's probably not going to be available until 2011. It's interesting, nonetheless, that Bill Belichick "stole" Barrett off injury waivers from his former understudy Josh McDaniels. We imagine McDaniels and GM Brian Xanders are none to happy.

Patriots claimed S Josh Barrett off waivers from the Broncos.

It's a rare move. Barrett was waived/injured, and waived/injured players are rarely picked up by other teams. The injury was to Barrett's shoulder. The Pats may opt to stash the gung-ho special teamer on I.R., or perhaps his injury isn't that serious. Either way, he probably won't make the final 53.

Broncos waived/injured S Josh Barrett.

The Broncos are ultra-secretive about the extent of injuries, so we have no idea what happened to Barrett. He was supposed to be a special teamer.

Broncos re-signed exclusive rights free agent S Josh Barrett to a one-year contract.

Barrett chipped in eight special teams tackles in 14 appearances last year, playing behind strong safety Brian Dawkins. He'll be on the roster bubble.

Second-year DB Josh Barrett has been running as the Broncos' third safety in nickel packages at minicamps.

Barrett, who started the last three games as a rookie, won't keep this job. The club invested the 48th and 114th picks on Darcel McBath and David Bruton to back up Brian Dawkins and Renaldo Hill. Barrett is looking at a fifth safety role.

Barrett was recently promoted from the practice squad. The nature of the injury wasn't immediately clear.

Broncos promoted S Josh "The Bullett" Barrett off their practice squad.

Barrett can run very fast in a straight line, which should make him a force on special teams. He's unlikely to help Denver on defense this season.

Broncos waived S Josh Barrett and DEs Paul Carrington and Larry Birdine.

Barrett can run in a straight line and hit, but has stiff hips and couldn't beat out Hamza Abdullah. He's a prime practice squad candidate.

The Broncos ultimately signed seventh-round S Josh Barrett to a four-year, $1.76 million contract.

The deal included a $56,300 signing bonus. Barrett's deal was originally reported as being for three years, but on the four-year pact he'll have a playing time escalator available in the final season.

The Broncos are expected to re-sign sixth-round draft choice Josh Barrett when he returns to the team for conditioning next week.

The NFL didn't approve a phrase in Barrett's rookie deal. The Arizona State alum will likely get the same $56,000 signing bonus he agreed to June 12.
