Falcons agreed to terms with FS Thomas DeCoud on a five-year, $18.7 million contract.
The deal contains $4 million in guarantees, including $1 million of DeCoud's first-year salary and a $3 million signing bonus. A third-round pick in 2008, DeCoud has started each of the past three seasons, and notched 86 tackles and a team-high four interceptions in 2011. DeCoud graded out negatively in coverage by Pro Football Focus, but has long been solid in run support. Tue, Mar 6, 2012 11:21:00 AM

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution believes free agent FS Thomas DeCoud is a strong candidate for an extension and may not hit the open market.

The Falcons are projected to be $28 million under the cap, but are focused on signing Curtis Lofton and Brent Grimes and have key decisions to make on fellow free agents John Abraham and Harry Douglas. The paper suggests SS William Moore as an option to replace DeCoud if an extension can't be struck.

The Falcons have yet to indicate whether they plan to re-sign free agent FS Thomas DeCoud.

In his year-ending press conference, GM Thomas Dimitroff said that the Falcons could realistically re-sign eight of their 17 impending free agents. James Sanders, who was signed as a backup safety during the preseason last year, is also set become a free agent this offseason.

Falcons FS Thomas DeCoud left Sunday's game in the first quarter after a helmet-to-helmet collision with Cedric Benson.

Benson lowered his shoulder to protect himself at the end of a run, and DeCoud was on the receiving end. The free safety looked OK on the sideline, but NFL protocol will probably require that DeCoud miss the rest of the game.

New Falcons secondary coach Tim Smith singled out FS Thomas DeCoud as someone who performed well in 2009.

DeCoud wasn't an IDP monster in 2009 as he had 68 tackles, two sacks, three interceptions and two forced fumbles. The Falcons aren't changing their defensive scheme and we doubt DeCoud can raise his tackle totals enough to be considered among the solid IDP bets at the safety spot. Still, he's solid in both run support and coverage and is locked in as the starter.

Falcons coach Mike Smith named free safety Thomas DeCoud his defensive MVP for the 2009 season.

It was a split vote, with GM Thomas Dimitroff giving his award to star linebacker Curtis Lofton. A first-year starter, DeCoud excelled in run support while proving more than adequate in coverage. He's a defensive building block for the Falcons.

Second-year man Thomas DeCoud has been penciled in as the Falcons' starting strong safety.

With William Moore (knee) out two-to-four weeks, DeCoud is the clear choice for the job. Jamaal Fudge isn't going to push him. We'll see what happens when Moore returns to full strength.

Scout.com's Adam Caplan says second-year man Thomas DeCoud will likely be the Falcons' new strong safety.

He's going to have to beat out second-round pick William Moore, but DeCoud would likely be Atlanta's best option in coverage. The Falcons will probably lean towards Moore if they're looking for a more physical, in-the-box type.

Falcons coach Mike Smith says second-year man Thomas DeCoud has a "great opportunity" to be the team's starting strong safety.

DeCoud and Jamaal Fudge will battle to replace Lawyer Milloy. DeCoud is a much more physically gifted player, especially in coverage, and is presumably the heavy favorite. The 2008 third-round pick looks like an IDP sleeper.

Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff indicated at the Combine that he doesn't envision 2008 third-round pick Thomas DeCoud as a strong safety.

Dimitroff says he's looking for a "tough hombre...a 220-pound-plus guy" to replace free agent Lawyer Milloy. DeCoud is only 6'2/185. The former Cal Bear will likely resume third safety and special teams duties next season.

Falcons signed third-round S Thomas DeCoud to a four-year contract.

DeCoud will likely be Atlanta's third safety behind SS Lawyer Milloy and FS Erik Coleman as a rookie, then replace Milloy in 2009. If DeCoud looks good in training camp, it may be enough to push Jimmy Williams off the club.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the Falcons are close to signing third-round draft pick Thomas DeCoud.

He's been working with the first two units at free safety, but is expected to backup Erik Coleman. Lawyer Milloy will start at the strong spot, but the Falcons hope to make the positions interchangeable.

Falcons selected California S Thomas DeCoud with the No. 98 overall pick in the draft.

DeCoud won't have to wear his patented super-tinted black visor playing in the Georgia Dome. The experienced starter will likely compete to start right away with Lawyer Milloy at strong safety, so he's an IDP to monitor.
