Panthers agreed to terms with S Thomas DeCoud, formerly of the Falcons, on a two-year contract.
The deal is worth up to $3.75 million, and includes a $500,000 signing bonus. DeCoud will start out as Carolina's No. 3 safety behind Roman Harper and Charles Godfrey, but will see plenty of snaps regardless of his depth-chart position. Godfrey is coming off a torn Achilles', and expected to spend time in the slot. Now 29, DeCoud graded out as one of the NFL's worst safeties in Pro Football Focus' 2013 ratings, and was similarly ineffective in 2012. The Panthers' front seven has a way of making defensive backs look better, however. Apr 10 - 8:57 PM

Date:

Free agent FS Thomas DeCoud is still negotiating with the Panthers, but a deal is not imminent.

DeCoud has found a soft market since getting dumped by the Falcons, so he may be using the Panthers' interest to press the issue with other safety-needy teams. Carolina is after bargain depth to shore up a safety corps led by the aging Roman Harper and Charles Godfrey, who is coming off an Achilles' tear.

Free agent FS Thomas DeCoud will visit the Panthers Monday.

Despite going to the Pro Bowl in 2012, DeCoud has found a soft market since getting dumped by the Falcons in early March. The cap-strapped Panthers see an opportunity to swoop in on the cheap. Charles Godfrey and aging Roman Harper are currently penciled in as their starting safeties. Godfrey is coming off an Achilles' tear and scheduled to make $5 million.

Free-agent FS Thomas DeCoud has received interest from the Raiders.

The Ravens and Cowboys have also shown interest, but no visits have been scheduled at this point. DeCoud met with the Lions on Friday and left without a contract. Rotoworld ranks DeCoud as the No. 4 remaining free-agent safety.

Free agent FS Thomas DeCoud is visiting the Lions.

The Lions are looking for Louis Delmas' replacement on the back end next to Glover Quin. It's the first visit DeCoud has made since being released by the Falcons ten days ago. After a 2012 season that saw him make the Pro Bowl, DeCoud was often burned in coverage in 2013. He turned 29 on Wednesday.

Falcons released FS Thomas DeCoud.

DeCoud's $4.2 million would have become guaranteed on March 15, and releasing him now saves the Falcons $3 million against the cap. After making the Pro Bowl in 2012, DeCoud was routinely burned on the back end last season. We don't expect him to have a strong market. DeCoud turns 29 in eight days.
Mar 11 - 4:03 PM

A league source tells Yahoo's Rand Getlin that Falcons FS Thomas DeCoud will be released by the fourth day of the new league year.

The oddly-specific date is because $2.3 million of DeCoud's $4.2 million salary becomes guaranteed on the fifth day of the new league year, which begins March 11. The move would clear $3 million in cap space. DeCoud had a miserable 2013 for the Falcons' soft defense, grading out 83-of-86 in Pro Football Focus' safety ratings. He turns 29 next month.
Feb 25 - 10:10 PM

ESPN Falcons reporter Vaughn McClure considers FS Thomas DeCoud's status with Atlanta "uncertain" for 2014.

Signed to a five-year, $17.5 million contract in 2012, DeCoud's tackling was noticeably poor this past season, and he ranked 83rd among 86 qualifying safeties in Pro Football Focus' 2013 ratings. DeCoud carries a 2014 salary cap charge of $4.8 million with a $4.2 million base salary. The Falcons could clear $3 million in salary cap space by cutting DeCoud this offseason.

Falcons FS Thomas DeCoud (concussion) practiced Wednesday.

DeCoud is on track to play in Monday night's game at San Francisco. His return will at least give the Falcons secondary a veteran presence as they started three rookies in Week 15.

Falcons FS Thomas DeCoud (concussion) has been ruled out for Week 15 against the Redskins.

Seventh-round rookie Zeke Motta will get the start in DeCoud's place, next to SS William Moore. According to Pro Football Focus, DeCoud has been nothing short of terrible in coverage this season, checking in as their No. 83 safety out of 87 qualifiers. Motta is purely a run stopper.

Falcons FS Thomas DeCoud exited Sunday's Week 14 game at Lambeau with a first-quarter head injury.

DeCoud went down in a heap at the tail end of a punishing run by Eddie Lacy on Green Bay's opening drive. DeCoud was later declared done for the day.

Falcons agreed to terms with FS Thomas DeCoud on a five-year, $18.7 million contract.

The deal contains $4 million in guarantees, including $1 million of DeCoud's first-year salary and a $3 million signing bonus. A third-round pick in 2008, DeCoud has started each of the past three seasons, and notched 86 tackles and a team-high four interceptions in 2011. DeCoud graded out negatively in coverage by Pro Football Focus, but has long been solid in run support.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution believes free agent FS Thomas DeCoud is a strong candidate for an extension and may not hit the open market.

The Falcons are projected to be $28 million under the cap, but are focused on signing Curtis Lofton and Brent Grimes and have key decisions to make on fellow free agents John Abraham and Harry Douglas. The paper suggests SS William Moore as an option to replace DeCoud if an extension can't be struck.

The Falcons have yet to indicate whether they plan to re-sign free agent FS Thomas DeCoud.

In his year-ending press conference, GM Thomas Dimitroff said that the Falcons could realistically re-sign eight of their 17 impending free agents. James Sanders, who was signed as a backup safety during the preseason last year, is also set become a free agent this offseason.

Falcons FS Thomas DeCoud left Sunday's game in the first quarter after a helmet-to-helmet collision with Cedric Benson.

Benson lowered his shoulder to protect himself at the end of a run, and DeCoud was on the receiving end. The free safety looked OK on the sideline, but NFL protocol will probably require that DeCoud miss the rest of the game.
