Former Patriots third-round pick Shawn Crable has signed with the CFL's Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
The 78th overall pick in the 2008 draft, Crable is just one of several recent early-round busts in New England. (They haven't been drafting well lately.) Patriots waived OLB Shawn Crable.

The move is somewhat surprising considering Crable played a lot of snaps as a pass-rusher off the defensive left side in sub packages against the Steelers Sunday night. The Pats will get to work on a different package for the Colts this week.

Patriots signed OLB Shawn Crable, DB Sergio Brown, G Rich Ohrnberger and WR Darnell Jenkins to their practice squad.

Crable was a third-round pick in 2008 but has yet to register an NFL tackle. He was a big-time pass rusher at Michigan but has had trouble staying healthy. Jenkins showed some flashes during preseason, but it wasn't enough.

The Pats did Crable a favor by cutting him now, because he wasn't going to make the team. An enigmatic 2008 third-round pick, Crable never appeared in a single game for New England. Crable was a standout pass rusher at Michigan, but he couldn't beat the injury bug. A change of scenery can't hurt.

It's not a good sign for Crable, who has spent his first two seasons on injured reserve. The Pats have not disclosed an injury, and Crable did participate in offseason practices. He may have just failed his conditioning test.

As the Boston Globe notes, this "can't be a good sign" for Crable, who is already well behind rookie Jermaine Cunningham on the depth chart. Crable may need to exhibit special teams value to win a roster spot in September.

The 2008 third-rounder has yet to play in a game, spending each of the past two seasons on injured reserve. Crable understands he "could have easily been gone" and says "this year's everything" for his career.

His chances of winning the weak outside 'backer job were crushed when Derrick Burgess was acquired. Crable will have to show special teams value to stick. He's behind Burgess, Adalius Thomas, and Pierre Woods at OLB.

2008 third-round pick Shawn Crable has spent most of his time at weak outside linebacker during Patriots OTAs.

Crable will compete for this position with fellow Michigan alum Pierre Woods. New England has discussed bringing in free agent Greg Ellis, but Ellis wants to play in a 4-3 defense. The winner here could generate 5-7 sacks.

The Boston Herald calls Shawn Crable a potential "wild card" to fill the Patriots' void at weak outside linebacker.

Crable, battling Vince Redd, Tully Banta-Cain, and Pierre Woods for the starting job, was the highest draft pick among them but didn't play last year. The Pats figure to end up rotating at the position, limiting any IDP upside.

The third-round pick had a lost rookie year. Expected to help the Patriots pass rush, he simply couldn't go on the field. Undrafted free agent Gary Guyton has made a far bigger impact. Crable will compete for spot duty on defense again next season.
