Raiders agreed to terms with S Reggie Smith, formerly of the Panthers.
Smith, 26, was out of football last year after being one of the final cuts in Panthers camp. The No. 75 pick of the 2008 draft is a career reserve and special teamer. Smith will add depth to arguably the weakest roster in the league. Apr 10 - 6:50 PM

Panthers signed S Reggie Smith, formerly of the 49ers.

"Reggie has been on our radar since the beginning of free agency and is a player we think can come in and compete at safety," said GM Marty Hurney. Outside of a seven-game stint to close out 2010, Smith has been a reserve and special teamer in 44 games dating back to 2008.

The Sacramento Bee confirms that free agent S Reggie Smith is less likely to return to the 49ers after the team franchise tagged Dashon Goldson.

Smith and fellow free agent S Madieu Williams "will be looking for starting roles" when the market opens on March 13. The 75th overall pick in the 2008 draft, Smith has starting-caliber tools and could be one of the better "second-tier" free agent targets. He goes 6-foot-1, 200 and played corner at Oklahoma.

The 49ers reportedly reached an "understanding" after the season that free agent S Reggie Smith would be allowed to test the market in 2012.

The Niners are expected to either franchise tag FS Dashon Goldson or lock him up long term, which would have left Smith as a third safety for another year behind Goldson and SS Donte Whitner. The 75th overall pick in the 2008 draft, Smith was a college cornerback. He held his own in seven starts two seasons ago, and should draw some interest as a starter in free agency.

49ers S Reggie Smith will miss "a couple of weeks" after being diagnosed Monday with a torn meniscus in his knee.

Smith will require arthroscopic knee surgery, though beat writer Matt Barrows reports it's "not a long-term injury." The surgery is still enough of a concern that it may give recently re-signed Dashon Goldson a leg up in the battle to start at free safety. Smith was shining in training camp before the injury.

49ers FS Reggie Smith will reportedly require surgery on an undisclosed body part and is out for an undetermined period of time.

This explains the team's sudden need to re-sign Dashon Goldson. Details of Smith's injury should be available soon. He was projected to start at free safety.

The Sacramento Bee expects Reggie Smith to be the 49ers' starting strong safety over Taylor Mays.

Beat writer Matt Barrows points to Smith's superior "fluidity and ball skills," the lack of which were knocks on Mays coming out of USC. Smith, entering his age-25 campaign and a contract year, finished last season with 42 tackles, four pass breakups, and one interception in 16 games (seven starts).

Reggie Smith has formally passed Taylor Mays on the depth chart as the 49ers' starting strong safety.

Smith and Mays shared snaps in Week 10, but Smith formally supplanted Mays against the Buccaneers. Smith only made one tackle, but contributed a QB hurry and broke up a pass. Mays is a special teamer until further notice.

49ers FS Reggie Smith will share snaps with Taylor Mays in Week 10.

Smith was the third safety at the beginning of the season, but Mays jumped past him and into the starting lineup when Michael Lewis was cut loose. Obviously it's a situation to avoid for IDP owners this week, though Mays hasn't made a major impact since entering the lineup, anyway.

Reggie Smith is the frontrunner for the third safety job right now, per beat writer Matt Barrows.

It's Mark Roman's old job. Smith will come in as a cover safety in nickel situations, a gig that fits the converted corner well.

Reggie Smith will be pushed by undrafted free agent Chris Maragos for the 49ers' backup free safety job.

Smith is a converted corner that was a third-round pick in 2008. We'd expect him to hold on to his gig.

The 49ers are converting Reggie Smith to safety.

Smith, who played corner and safety at Oklahoma, was a third-round pick last offseason. He'll push FS Dashon Goldson for playing time this summer.

49ers signed third-round draft choice CB Reggie Smith.

The Niners are hoping that Smith will push Walt Harris at right corner opposite Nate clemens. That would likely result in Smith being targeted quite often by offenses, thus giving the rookie some IDP potential.

Coach Mike Nolan says the 49ers are counting on rookie Reggie Smith to play cornerback.

Nolan indicated that Smith, who lacks ideal speed for the position, may start opposite Nate Clements from day one. That would mean Walt Harris competing for nickel duties with Shawntae Spencer. Smith would likely be targeted often by opponents.
