Cottam broke his neck at the end of the 2009 season and it's unclear if he could pass a physical now. The Chiefs are fine at tight end with promising second-year man Tony Moeaki.

Chiefs TE Brad Cottam (neck surgery) participated in workouts led by Matt Cassel this week.

Cottam spent last season on injured reserve after breaking his neck at the end of the 2009 season. The Chiefs have moved on to Tony Moeaki, but it appears that Cottam will try to make a comeback this summer.

Chiefs placed TE Brad Cottam (neck surgery) on the reserve/PUP list.

Cottam, who broke his neck toward the end of last season, cleared waivers after failing his physical on Wednesday. His placement on the reserve/PUP list means that he won't play before Week 7, and we'd be shocked if the Chiefs actually activated him. Considering his injury history, Cottam's career may be over before it ever had a chance to get off the ground.

Chiefs waived TE Brad Cottam.

Cottam couldn't stay on the field at Tennessee due to injuries, and he had the same problems in Kansas City. The 2008 third-round pick missed half of last year before undergoing neck surgery just following the season. He was still sidelined by June OTAs. So highly decorated at the time, the Chiefs' 2008 draft class has turned out to be underwhelming at best.

Cottam remains uncertain when he'll be cleared for football activities, but it's unlikely he'll have a major role even if healthy. The Chiefs drafted talented tight end Tony Moeaki in the third round and still have Leonard Pope penciled in as their starter.

Chiefs TE Brad Cottam's late-season neck surgery is not expected to affect his status for 2010 training camp.

Cottam had a cracked cervical vertebrae repaired on December 23; three days after his the game of his life (four catches, 62 yards in Week 15). The positive prognosis gives him a good shot at keeping a roster spot in 2010.

Chiefs TE Brad Cottam had surgery Wednesday to repair the cervical vertebrae he cracked in Week 15.

"Everything was very successful and went very well," coach Todd Haley said. "He’s already on the road to recovery, which is a big thing." It's unknown when Cottam will be able to return this offseason, but any missed time will hurt his chances of making the Chiefs' 2010 roster.

Chiefs TE Brad Cottam is out for the season with a cracked bone in his vertebra. He'll be placed on season-ending injured reserve.

Fortunately, there's no spinal cord damage, but it's horrible timing for the 2008 third-round pick. Cottam, invisible for the first 11 weeks for the season, finally broke through last week with four catches for 62 yards against the Browns. Cottam also struggled with injuries in college, so the Chiefs will be leery of handing him the starting job this offseason.

Brad Cottam caught four balls for 62 yards in the Chiefs' Week 15 loss.

Cottam, a third-round pick by the Carl Peterson/Herm Edwards regime in 2008, has been a healthy scratch for much of this season under Scott Pioli and Todd Haley. The 6'8" specimen has an intriguing skill set, but will need to keep this up in Weeks 16-17 to have any shot at a starting job in 2010.

Cottam was never a big pass catcher at Tennessee, so it's not surprising that his hands need work. With the position now open to competition, Cottam will have to beat out veterans Sean Ryan and Tony Curtis plus rookie seventh-rounder Jake O'Connell.

Chiefs coach Todd Haley is not ready to hand over tight end duties to Brad Cottam without competition.

Cottam remains the heavy favorite, but Haley wants him to earn the job over seventh-round rookie Jake O'Connell and undrafted free agent Tom Crabtree. If Cottam can't beat out that pair we'll know for sure he's not NFL material.

New Chiefs starting TE Brad Cottam acknowledged that he doesn't expect to catch many passes in new coach Todd Haley's offense.

Haley rarely threw to tight ends in Arizona, too. "I was brought here...to be more of a blocker," Cottam said. He started seven games in two-TE sets and caught seven passes as a rookie. Don't expect more than 20 grabs this year.

Cottam, the No. 76 pick in 2008, is a holdover from the old Chiefs regime, so this may not last. New coach Todd Haley also rarely used tight ends in the passing game in Arizona. Cottam, who is 6'8/270, may focus on blocking.

Brad Cottam caught four passes for 34 yards in Week 8 against the Jets.

The rookie tight end had zero career catches entering the day, so this qualifies as a big deal for him. He was even targeted in the end zone once. Still, his four receptions were mostly just the result of a career day for Tyler Thigpen.
