Free agent OT Sam Baker is unlikely to play another snap in the NFL.
According to Baker's father, Sam "probably just concluded his career" because of injuries. The 21st overall pick in the 2008 draft has always battled injuries and missed all of last season with a torn patellar tendon. In total, Baker missed 42 games in his seven-year career. He was released by the Falcons in June. Tue, Aug 11, 2015 09:55:00 PM

Falcons released T Sam Baker.

A team with major questions along their shaky offensive line is moving on from a guy who started 61 games for them over the last seven seasons. It suggests Baker's rehab off last August's torn patellar tendon has been as difficult as expected. Baker is just 30 years old, but is going to have to prove his health before getting another shot. He's started just four games over the last two years.

Falcons coach Dan Quinn confirmed OT Sam Baker (knee) is a candidate for the starting left guard job.

Baker spent all last year on I.R. with a torn patellar tendon. He also missed 12 games in 2013, and is best suited for the inside at this stage. Seven months removed from knee surgery, Baker is questionable for training camp.

ESPN Falcons reporter Vaughn McClure reports OT Sam Baker is open to playing guard in 2015.

Recovering from a torn patellar tendon, Baker missed all of 2014. Knee issues also limited him to just 190 snaps in 2013. With Jake Matthews locked in at left tackle, Baker will battle for a job at either right tackle or guard. At tackle, he'd compete with Lamar Holmes, a rookie or both. It remains possible that Baker gets released. He's a 30-year-old (in May) injury liability. Cutting him would create $1.9 million in cap space.

Falcons placed LT Sam Baker (torn patellar tendon) on injured reserve, ending his season.

No. 6 overall pick Jake Matthews will slide in on the blindside, with Lamar Holmes re-entering the starting lineup at right tackle. In theory, it significantly weakens Atlanta's line, but Baker was a question mark even before going down. Baker is dealing with a tear to his right patellar tendon one year after tearing the left. He'll enter 2015 having appeared in just four games over the past two seasons. Although he's due an affordable $4.5 million next season, he could easily end up a cap casualty. Cutting Baker, who turns 30 in May, next spring would create $1.9 million in cap space. He's been a mega-bust since signing a six-year, $41.1 million extension last March.

Falcons LT Sam Baker suffered a torn right patellar tendon during Saturday's preseason game and is done for the season.

It's a big blow for Atlanta, as turnstile Lamar Holmes will enter the starting lineup. No. 6 overall pick Jake Matthews will likely kick from right to left tackle. It's Matthews' more natural position, and he's the future at the position anyway. Baker signed a six-year, $41 million deal with Atlanta in March of 2013 and played in just four games last season due to a torn left patellar tendon. He's now likely to go down as one of GM Thomas Dimitroff's biggest blunders. Dimitroff has struggled mightily in recent years to piece together a competent roster.

Falcons LT Sam Baker was carted off the field with a right knee injury during Saturday's preseason game against the Texans.

Initial word is that Baker hyperextended the knee. More will be known once tests are completed. A left knee issue cut Baker's 2013 short. Lamar Holmes entered the game at left tackle in Baker's place. If Baker is to miss time, Holmes will likely move to the right side with rookie Jake Matthews shifting to his more natural left tackle spot. Matthews is the future on Matt Ryan's blind side.

Falcons LT Sam Baker (knee surgery) is participating fully at OTAs.

Coach Mike Smith observed that Baker moved "extremely well" on the first day of practice. With Baker back on Matt Ryan's blind side, Atlanta's offensive line is shaping up as LT Baker, LG Justin Blalock, C Joe Hawley, RG Jon Asamoah, and RT Jake Matthews. Peter Konz and Lamar Holmes will be reserves.

Falcons LT Sam Baker (knee) expects to be cleared this week.

Baker underwent platelet rich plasma treatment on his left knee before undergoing surgery in November and landing on I.R. He appeared in just four games last season. Whether Baker mans left tackle for the Falcons remains to be seen. Atlanta could easily take a left tackle with the No. 6 pick or trade up.

Falcons LT Sam Baker underwent platelet rich plasma (PRP) treatment on his left knee, specific to his patellar tendon, before undergoing surgery last season.

The Falcons never revealed the full extent of Baker's injury before placing him on I.R. in November, so we're just recording this more for bookkeeping purposes. Baker is entering year two of a six-year, $41.1 million deal he inked last March. The Falcons have said they plan to keep him at left tackle. But one of the big three left tackles will likely be there if the Falcons stick at No. 6 in May's draft.

Coach Mike Smith expects LT Sam Baker (knee, injured reserve) to be ready for the Falcons' offseason program, and says the team has no plans to move him to right tackle.

In the first year of a six-year, $41.1 million deal this season, Baker was a nightmare on Matt Ryan's blindside, but the Falcons don't have any better options on the roster. They're going to have a top-10 pick (at least) in May's draft. For better or worse, Baker is likely to get another shot at left tackle in 2014.

Falcons placed LT Sam Baker on injured reserve with a left knee injury, ending his season.

The Falcons have yet to reveal the full extent of Baker's injury, but ESPN's Vaughn McClure reports he's undergoing surgery. Baker had appeared in just one of the Falcons' past five games. The Falcons are moving forward with Lamar Holmes at left tackle. It's not a good situation for Matt Ryan, who has watched almost his entire supporting cast succumb to injury. That being said, Baker was playing extremely poorly before going down. Baker signed a six-year, $41.1 million extension in March. He'll be back in 2014.
Tue, Nov 12, 2013 05:37:00 PM

Falcons coach Mike Smith is "worried" about the health of LT Sam Baker (knee).

Baker was inactive for Sunday's loss, and it doesn't sound like he made much progress during his week off. He's appeared in just one of the Falcons' past five games. It's not outside the realm of possibility that Baker ends up on injured reserve.
Mon, Nov 11, 2013 02:58:00 PM

Falcons LT Sam Baker (knee) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Panthers.

Baker practiced on a limited basis this week and has a decent chance of suiting up after missing the last three games. He'll be an immediate upgrade on Matt Ryan's blindside if active, with Lamar Holmes moving back to right tackle.

Falcons LT Sam Baker (knee) was limited in Wednesday and Thursday's practices, and has a chance to suit up for Week 8.

Baker didn't practice in Week 7, so it appears he has a legit shot at returning. If he can't go, Lamar Holmes will make another start on Matt Ryan's blindside.
