Jerome Simpson says a new bed is helping with his troublesome back.
Simpson has invested in a Tempurpedic mattress with a pillow top. "It's helped stabilize my back and keep me in good posture," he said. Simpson insists that injuries are the reason he could gain any separation last season en route to an embarrassing 26/274/0 campaign. Regardless, the Vikings would be best-served by getting Cordarrelle Patterson ready to start opposite Greg Jennings right away. May 29 - 11:24 AM

GM Rick Spielman suggested he expects Jerome Simpson to be the Vikings' starting split end.

The Vikings are blaming back woes for Simpson's humiliating 2012 campaign, essentially giving him a pass. "We've seen some of the things he did in Cincinnati," Spielman said. "We thought he was one of those young receivers that was on the come." This sounds like wishful thinking from a desperate general manager. Adding Greg Jennings certainly helps, but the Vikes should strongly consider adding competition for Simpson with one of their two first-round picks.

Jerome Simpson's one-year deal with the Vikings includes a $1.35 million base salary, $500,000 signing bonus, and $250,000 workout bonus.

As venerable beat writer Tom Pelissero put it, "wow." The Vikings actually gave a raise to a completely ineffective player who was limited by a mysterious injury last year and has been an off-field headache. It speaks to the Vikings' desperate situation at receiver, and seeming lack of front-office direction.

Vikings re-signed WR Jerome Simpson to a one-year contract.

Vikings fans will hardly miss Percy Harvin. Simpson's return is a major surprise for a team that appeared dead-set on moving on after he caught just 26 passes for 274 yards his first year in Minnesota. Now he's back as the Vikes' nominal No. 1 receiver until they inevitably address a WR corps that was among the worst in the NFL last season. Simpson's athleticism is ever appealing, but he's not going to have fantasy value in 2013.

The Vikings reportedly "have not moved" to re-sign free agents Jerome Simpson or Devin Aromashodu.

GM Rick Spielman has something up his sleeve at wideout, and it wisely doesn't include the below-average likes of Simpson, Aromashodu or Michael Jenkins. The Vikings are expected to be major players for free agents Mike Wallace/Greg Jennings, and could also address the position with one of their two first-round draft picks. Simpson is going to have to settle for another one-year deal after faceplanting with the Vikes last season.

The Vikings may re-sign free agent Jerome Simpson, but are not expected to use him as a 2013 starter.

Simpson was a complete flop as Minnesota's 2012 split end receiver and is better suited as a No. 3 or No. 4 wideout, coming off the bench. Regardless of Percy Harvin's whereabouts, Minnesota will make upgrading out wide a priority in free agency and/or the draft. Dwayne Bowe should rank high on their wish list.

GM Rick Spielman confirmed that the Vikings want to bring back impending free agent Jerome Simpson for another season.

Spielman still believes Simpson "has the potential to really thrive" despite a disappointing 2012 season. He couldn't separate from defenders and had trouble cutting after a nerve injury in his back caused weakness in his lower leg and foot. Spielman also wants to re-sign RT Phil Loadholt and FB Jerome Felton.

Christian Ponder wants the team to re-sign impending free agent Jerome Simpson.

Ponder blames Simpson's struggles on the receiver being on a new team for the first time in his career. "He's a guy that I hope we keep on the roster and continue to develop and build a relationship on the field and off the field," Ponder said. Simpson caught just 26 passes for 274 yards and no scores this season. He's a straight-line speedster who doesn't get open deep.
Jan 7 - 8:13 PM

Jerome Simpson caught two passes for 21 yards in the Vikings' first-round playoff loss to the Packers.

Simpson's shining playoff moment was a 13-yard gain on a slant route where he very nearly fumbled at the end of the play. A huge disappointment as a player billed to be Minnesota's answer at outside receiver in 2012, Simpson finished a pathetic 134th in per-game fantasy scoring among wideouts after returning from his three-game suspension. Simpson is an impending free agent and we wouldn't expect him back in Minnesota for 2013.
Jan 5 - 11:14 PM

Jerome Simpson caught three passes on six targets for 39 yards versus the Packers in Week 17.

The targets tied for the team high. Simpson was a non-factor in the fourth quarter after somehow passing locker-room concussion tests. He was unable to stand without falling before leaving the field. Unless the symptom surface in the next day or two, Simpson should be fine for the rematch at Green Bay.

Jerome Simpson was sent to the locker room for concussion tests in the third quarter of Sunday's Week 17 game against the Packers.

Simpson was clearly dazed and confused, unable to stand without falling after colliding with Morgan Burnett. He somehow gained clearance has returned to the game in the fourth quarter.

Jerome Simpson caught four passes for 32 yards in the Vikings' Week 16 win over the Texans.

Simpson didn't hurt his team in this one. He came back to the ball well and hauled in four of his five targets. The 32 yards mark the most for Simpson since he had 37 against the Bucs in Week 8.

Beat writer Tom Pelissero says it "seems a given" that the Vikings will not bring back impending free agent Jerome Simpson in 2013.

Simpson has been among the least effective starting wideouts in the NFL this season. Perhaps his early-season back injury has something to do with it, but the straight-line speedster doesn't even appear to be giving enough effort. He has 19 catches for 203 yards in his first 10 games as a Viking.

Jerome Simpson caught four passes for 27 yards in Minnesota's Week 15 win over the Rams.

The four-catch effort was just Simpson's second of the year, while the yards were his most since Week 8. The free-agent bust is very unlikely to be back with the Vikings in 2013.

Coach Leslie Frazier indicated Jerome Simpson's back injury has "definitely" affected his play over the past two months.

The injury's biggest impact has been in speed and the ability to plant coming in and out of breaks. "You can see he's not as crisp as he was before that injury," Frazier said. Quite frankly, Simpson has not been an NFL-caliber wide receiver since the weakness and numbness appeared in his lower leg back in early October.
