NFL suspended Vikings WR Jerome Simpson three games for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.
Simpson was in New York appealing the ban two weeks ago, apparently to no avail. It's not a huge loss, as Simpson has tumbled down the depth chart to No. 4. Cordarrelle Patterson, Greg Jennings, and Jarius Wright are Minnesota's top three wideouts. Simpson's suspension is the result of a November DUI. Aug 29 - 11:38 AM

Date:

Vikings WR Jerome Simpson failed to haul in his lone target against the Chiefs Saturday night.

Simpson only has two catches for 25 yards this preseason. He is clearly the No. 4 receiver behind Greg Jennings, Cordarrelle Patterson and Jarius Wright. Simpson likely faces a three-game suspension to start the season.

Vikings WR Jerome Simpson is facing a three-game suspension for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.

Simpson was in New York Monday afternoon for his appeal hearing. The three-game ban stems from Simpson's November arrest for DUI when he refused to complete a breathalyzer test. He later pleaded guilty to reckless driving. Simpson is a repeat offender after he was busted on felony drug charges in 2012.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press suggests Vikings WR Jerome Simpson could face a four-game suspension stemming from his November 9 DUI.

The NFL typically lets teams know about suspensions before training camp, so we'd expect to hear something by July. A Simpson suspension would clear the path for Cordarrelle Patterson to emerge as Minnesota's primary "X" wideout, with Greg Jennings and Jarius Wright sharing snaps at "Z" and slot receiver.
Jun 16 - 1:19 PM

Jerome Simpson is not in line to start this season.

Second-year breakout candidate Cordarrelle Patterson will be the "X" receiver and Greg Jennings will be the "Z." Simpson was re-signed to a one-year, minimum salary contract to be the No. 3 receiver and run the vertical clear-out routes needed in a Norv Turner offense. He's a poor bet to surpass last year's 48-726-1 line.
Jun 11 - 8:24 PM

Vikings re-signed WR Jerome Simpson to a one-year contract.

He's a player the Vikings just can't quit. Simpson is presumably back on another one-year deal. Simpson returns as the Vikings' No. 3 wideout, and should primarily run opposite Cordarrelle Patterson on the outside, allowing Greg Jennings to operate out of the slot. Yardage-wise, Simpson is coming off a career year, but will remain no more than a WR5 for fantasy purposes in 2014.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports the Vikings would like to re-sign free agent Jerome Simpson.

Coach Mike Zimmer confirmed as much on Thursday. It likely wouldn't be more than a one-year deal. The draft and free-agent market are loaded with receivers, so it'd be wise for Simpson to sign quickly. Simpson wouldn't be anything more than the No. 3 receiver in Minnesota, behind Greg Jennings and Cordarrelle Patterson. Simpson played in Cincinnati from 2008-2011 when new Vikings coach Mike Zimmer was the defensive coordinator.
Mar 5 - 5:53 PM

ESPN Vikings blogger Ben Goessling guesses the team will re-sign free agent Jerome Simpson on a one-year deal.

Before Cordarrelle Patterson's Dynasty owners freak out, Simpson would be brought back as a strict third wideout, allowing Greg Jennings to move to the slot in three-wide formations. Simpson certainly won't be expensive. He has a possible suspension stemming from a DUI looming over his head and has produced just one touchdown over the last two seasons.

Impending free agent Jerome Simpson pleaded guilty Thursday to careless driving and third-degree DUI stemming from his November 9 arrest.

He was sentenced to 120 hours of community service and must attend alcohol seminars. Since Simpson has a history of violating NFL policy -- he was suspended three games to open the 2012 season -- the Minneapolis Star-Tribune considers him "likely" to face additional discipline from commissioner Roger Goodell. Simpson will not be an attractive signing in 2014 free agency.
Jan 3 - 2:18 PM

Jerome Simpson caught three balls for 29 yards in the Vikings' Week 17 win over the Lions.

A physically talented but maddeningly inconsistent situational deep threat-type receiver, Simpson's 2013 season ends with 48 catches for 726 yards and one touchdown. Turning 28 in February, Simpson heads to free agency this offseason. Even the NFL's most receiver-needy teams shouldn't value him as a starter. Simpson is best suited for a rotational role.

Jerome Simpson caught one ball for eight yards in the Vikings' Week 16 loss to the Bengals.

Simpson has been losing playing time to Cordarrelle Patterson of late, hitting rock bottom in the box score. Unsigned for 2014, Simpson will likely play his last down as a Viking in Week 17 against the Lions.

Jerome Simpson caught one pass for 19 yards in Sunday's Week 15 win over the Eagles.

Simpson's three targets were fewer than Greg Jennings (13), Cordarrelle Patterson (6), Jarius Wright (5) and Matt Asiata (5). He's well off the fantasy radar heading into a tough Week 16 matchup at Cincy.

Jerome Simpson caught four passes for 48 yards and a touchdown in Minnesota's Week 14 loss to the Ravens.

Simpson's eight-yard score was an excellent, toe-tapping grab at the back of the end zone. Amazingly, it was his first touchdown in 25 games as a Viking. Simpson will have vanishingly-little upside as a WR4 for the final two weeks of the fantasy playoffs.
Sun, Dec 8, 2013 05:59:00 PM

Jerome Simpson caught three balls for 76 yards in the Vikings' Week 13 win over the Bears.

He also dropped a would-be touchdown on the left side of the end zone late in the contest. Simpson is a maddeningly inconsistent real-life player, and in fantasy his upside isn't enough to make Simpson worth starting, pretty much ever. Don't bother rostering him in 12- or 14-team leagues.
Sun, Dec 1, 2013 05:11:00 PM

Jerome Simpson caught two passes for 54 yards in Week 12 against the Packers.

Simpson was targeted four times on the day. His long gain of 31 yards came on a third-and-five where he beat Tramon Williams and high-pointed a Christian Ponder pass for a first down. Simpson is losing snaps to Cordarrelle Patterson but remains a deep threat for this Minnesota offense. Since the Vikings have a weak-armed quarterback, Simpson isn't worth owning in fantasy land.
