ESPN Chargers reporter Eric Williams believes Jahleel Addae and Dwight Lowery would be the team's starting safeties if the season started today.
Addae would be the strong safety in that scenario with Lowery at free safety, though those roles are mostly interchangeable in DC John Pagano's scheme. Dexter McCoil, Adrian Phillips and Darrell Stuckey will challenge for backup roles. Lowery has particularly big shoes to fill at free safety. He'll be tasked with replacing perennial Pro Bowler Eric Weddle. May 15 - 11:03 AM

Chargers signed S Dwight Lowery to a three-year contract.

Lowery managed four interceptions with Indy last year, but remained one of the worst cover safeties in the league. He'll give the Chargers a veteran stopgap to replace Eric Weddle. The signing does little to improve a secondary that allowed too many big plays in 2015. Lowery was PFF's No. 49 safety out of 88 qualifiers.

Colts GM Ryan Grigson said S Dwight Lowery will be pushed in training camp.

Lowery started 15 games for Atlanta last year, but was one of the worst cover safeties in the league. He’s facing competition from rookie Clayton Geathers to start opposite Mike Adams. At the very least, Geathers will see time in sub packages.

Colts signed S Dwight Lowery, formerly of the Falcons.

Lowery, 29, was one of the worst cover safeties in the league last year, grading out in the bottom half of PFF's ratings. Lowery's signing won't prevent the Colts from upgrading their secondary in the draft.

Free agent S Dwight Lowery visited with the Colts.

The Colts are expected to add a veteran safety opposite Mike Adams with Lowery, Stevie Brown, and Bernard Pollard the top free agents remaining. Lowery started 15 games for Atlanta last season, but struggled in coverage. He should be available for the veteran minimum.

The Falcons have yet to open contract talks with free agent S Dwight Lowery.

Lowery started 15 games last year, but his cover-skills graded in the bottom half of the league. He doesn't have the range to play free safety in HC Dan Quinn's scheme, and re-signing him isn't a priority. After settling for the veteran minimum last year, Lowery should be limited to one-year deals again this offseason.

Free agent S Dwight Lowery doesn't know if he'll be back with the Falcons.

Lowery signed a one-year, $760,000 deal with the Falcons in free agency last year. He ended up starting 15-of-16 games, grading out as PFF's No. 43 safety among 88 qualifiers. Lowery will get some nibbles on the open market.

Falcons FS Dwight Lowery (concussion) returned to practice Saturday.

He ended up missing just over a week of practice. Lowery has suffered four concussions since entering the league, so there was some concern his season could be in doubt. Now that he's cleared, Lowery will start opposite SS William Moore in base sets.

ESPN Falcons reporter Vaughn McClure believes FS Dwight Lowery's concussion could put his "season in doubt."

Lowery suffered a severe concussion three games into last season, so his history of brain injuries is a major concern. It's yet another worry for an Atlanta defense that could be roasted by the pass all season. They're below average at safety, and perhaps the NFL's weakest team when it comes to pass rush.

Falcons FS Dwight Lowery suffered a concussion in Friday's practice.

Coach Mike Smith doesn't believe Lowery's condition is serious, but it's concerning for a player who spent time on I.R. last year with a concussion. With Dezmen Southward also sidelined, the Falcons plan to crosstrain corners Robert McClain and Ricardo Allen at free safety.

The Falcons are giving Dwight Lowery the first crack at their free safety opening.

The ex-Jet and Jaguar is practicing with the first-team defense alongside SS William Moore. Lowery has a checkered injury history, but range to cover center field and plus ball skills. Signed to a one-year, $760,000 deal in April, Lowery could end up one of GM Thomas Dimitroff's shrewdest offseason moves.

Falcons signed FS Dwight Lowery.

Lowery, 28, started three games for the Jaguars last season before landing on I.R. with a concussion. He was then waived in November. Lowery has started 41 games the past six seasons but has missed 28 contests over the same span. The Falcons need a free safety after Thomas DeCoud's release, but we don't see Lowery being that guy. GM Thomas Dimitroff will likely draft a safety.

Jaguars waived FS Dwight Lowery (concussion) off injured reserve.

Players can be waived off IR when the team deems them healthy. Lowery will now pass through waivers and then be free to sign with any team. The six-year pro with 41 starts under his belt would be a nice depth add for needy contenders.

Jaguars FS Dwight Lowery (IR, concussion) will be released once he's medically cleared.

Lowery has started 20 games over the past two seasons, including the first three of this year. But the Jags would rather just move on and roll with Josh Evans next to fellow rookie Johnathan Cyprien.

Jaguars placed FS Dwight Lowery on injured reserve with a concussion, ending his season.

Lowery went down in Week 3, and apparently wasn't close to gaining clearance. It's always troubling news when a concussion proves to be season-ending. In his sixth year out of San Jose State, Lowery was struggling before going down. Going on 28, Lowery is signed through 2015. Struggling rookie Josh Evans will hold his starting spot for the remainder of the season.
