Jets RT Breno Giacomini will undergo back surgery Wednesday.
The operation will shave down a herniated disc in Giacomini's back. The procedure carries a four-month recovery, but the Jets will likely take it easy with Giacomini during the offseason program. The right tackle should be ready for training camp. Jan 2 - 11:45 AM

Jets placed RT Breno Giacomini on injured reserve with a back injury, ending his season.

Giacomini was plagued by back woes all season. He appeared in only five games. Now 31, Giacomini previously hadn't missed a game since 2013, but hasn't been an asset for some time now. Giacomini is signed for $4.5 million next season, but won't be back at that price, if at all.

Jets RT Breno Giacomini (back) has been ruled out for Week 14.

Brent Qvale, who started a game and saw plenty of snaps at right tackle early in the season, will get the nod this week. It is just another blow for a spiraling team.

Jets activated RT Breno Giacomini off the PUP list.

WR Jeremy Butler was waived in a corresponding move. Activating Giacomini suggests he will be active and likely start this week. Giacomini has not been great, but he will be an upgrade on Ben Ijalana.

Jets placed RT Breno Giacomini (back) on the reserve/PUP list.

Giacomini is reportedly making progress, but he'll miss the first six games of the season. Giacomini hadn't missed a start in two years since coming over from the Seahawks. Ben Ijalana should be the primary fill-in.

CBS Sports' Jason LaCanfora suggests RT Breno Giacomini (back) could open the season on reserve/PUP.

Giacomini has missed the entire preseason with his back issue. He's reportedly making progress, but the Jets don't have a timetable for his return. Ben Ijalana is the top in-house candidate to replace Giacomini.

Jets coach Todd Bowles admits RT Breno Giacomini (back, PUP) might not be ready for Week 1.

Bowles said the team may have to add a veteran free agent. The market is obviously barren, with Will Beatty the top option. "Retired" Eugene Monroe is also available.

Jets RT Breno Giacomini (back, active/PUP) has yet to return to practice.

Giacomini has not seen any work in training camp, and it does not sound like he is particularly close to a return. "He’s getting better," coach Todd Bowles said, "but not this week." It does not sound like Giacomini is a lock to be ready for Week 1, which would be a disaster for one of the thinnest offensive lines in the league. Ben Ijalana and Brent Qvale have worked with the first-team during camp.

Jets RT Breno Giacomini is week to week with a back injury.

Giacomini was viewed as a release/bench candidate, but Gang Green didn't add any legitimate competition. The Jets have extremely little tackle depth following the retirement of LT D'Brickashaw Ferguson.

The New York Daily News' Manish Mehta doesn't believe Jets RT Breno Giacomini is guaranteed to keep his job.

Mehta considers it a "stone-cold lead-pipe lock" that the Jets use an early-round pick on an offensive lineman, and fully expects GM Mike Maccagnan to select multiple blockers in this month's draft. Giacomini was a weak spot on the line last season, getting obliterated in pass protection. Releasing him and saving $3.8 million would allow the Jets to sign their draft class.

Jets RT Breno Giacomini is a potential cap cut.

Giacomini had a down year in OC Chan Gailey’s spread-heavy scheme, allowing a team-high 44 hurries. The Jets can save $3.8 million from releasing him.

Jets signed RT Breno Giacomini, formerly of the Seahawks, to a four-year, $18 million contract.

A very limited talent, 28-year-old Giacomini has forged a career as a starter with sheer determination and physicality. He's a brawling blocker, and will take the place of Austin Howard in New York. We wouldn't call it a big downgrade, but it's certainly not an upgrade, either. The Seahawks essentially made no attempt to retain Giacomini. He's a rather uninspiring addition for Gang Green.

Free agent RT Breno Giacomini will visit the Jets on Wednesday.

With two-year starter Austin Howard headed to Oakland, the Jets are in the market for a new right tackle. They've talked with free agent Zach Strief and will investigate Giacomini. Giacomini is an above-average pass protector but struggles in the run game, even though he brings a bit of a nasty streak to the field. GM John Idzik knows Giacomini from their days together in Seattle.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer puts the odds at less than 30 percent that the Seahawks re-sign free agent RT Breno Giacomini.

Giacomini is going to command more money than the Seahawks are willing to pay, especially since they already have significant dollars tied up in LT Russell Okung and C Max Unger. If Giacomini finds a softer market than anticipated, he could be back on a cheap deal. The 28-year-old is our No. 8 free-agent tackle.

Seahawks RT Breno Giacomini (knee) and LT Russell Okung (toe) are both practicing this week.

Yes, the Seahawks are about to get another infusion of talent. Along with Percy Harvin's impending return, their starting tackles are expected to get some snaps against the Vikings this week. It allows natural guard Paul McQuistan to go back inside and should improve Russell Wilson's protection vastly.
