Vikings C John Sullivan slimmed down to 300 pounds this offseason.
Sullivan has played most of his career around 325 pounds, but he wanted to slim down after missing all of last season because of two back surgeries. "I’m not eating at restaurants very much; I’m not drinking at all," Sullivan said. "I’m really focused on being as healthy as possible." Although no restaurants or alcohol sounds like a torturous way to live, the lost weight should help the 30-year-old stay healthy. He is competing with Joe Berger for the starting job. John Sullivan took the first-team reps a center during Vikings OTAs this week.

Joe Berger, who started every game for an injured Sullivan last season, took the first-team reps last week. The Vikings will likely continue to split snaps between the two until a clear front-runner emerges.

Vikings C John Sullivan (back surgeries) has had "no limitations" in voluntary practice.

Sullivan still hasn't been officially cleared for OTAs, but he's on the right track. Sullivan has been the Vikings' center since 2009, but missed all of last season. He will be the starter if his health cooperates.

ESPN Vikings reporter Ben Goessling expects C John Sullivan (back) to regain his starting job if healthy.

31-year-old Sullivan missed all of 2015 recovering from twin back surgeries. There were offseason rumors over his health status, but he expects to be ready for the start of the season. With Joe Berger coming off a solid year, Minnesota can shed Sullivan's $5.5 million salary if he has any setbacks.
Mar 18 - 7:14 PM

Vikings coach Mike Zimmer suggested C John Sullivan (back) isn’t a lock to regain his starting job.

Sullivan missed all of 2015 with two back surgeries and is entering his age-31 season. He was one of the top centers in the league before going down, but could be expendable after Joe Berger graded as the Vikings’ best offensive lineman last year. Minnesota could save $5.2 million from releasing Sullivan.
Feb 20 - 3:27 PM

Vikings C John Sullivan (back) plans to return in 2016.

Sullivan is five months removed from his latest surgery, after undergoing two separate back operations. Although Joe Berger enjoyed a solid year on the pivot in Sullivan's absence, Sullivan's starting job security isn't in doubt. Sullivan's return should provide a lift to an offensive line that allowed pressure on nearly 50 percent of Teddy Bridgewater's 2015 dropbacks.
Feb 19 - 5:35 PM

Vikings C John Sullivan (back, I.R./return) recently had a setback, and isn't expected to return this season.

Sullivan had to undergo another operation following a weight room mishap. Joe Berger, who has held up well in Sullivan's absence, will continue to fill in.

Vikings placed C John Sullivan (back) on injured reserve/designated to return.

Sullivan underwent a lumbar microdiscectomy on Wednesday after missing the last three weeks of practices with back spasms. Sullivan is eligible to return Week 10. Joe Berger will start at center with Sullivan sidelined. Sullivan's loss is enormous, particularly when coupled with RT Phil Loadholt's year-ending Achilles' tear. From left to right, the Vikings' Week 1 line projects as LT Matt Kalil, LG Brandon Fusco, C Berger, RG Mike Harris, and RT T.J. Clemmings. It's gone from a likely strength to a near-certain weakness. Sullivan is one of the best centers in football.

Vikings C John Sullivan (back) was absent from Tuesday's practice.

He's still dealing with back spasms and may not be ready for Monday night's season opener at San Francisco. Eleven-year veteran Joe Berger is next up on the center depth chart.

Vikings C John Sullivan (back) did not practice again on Monday.

Sullivan has been sidelined three weeks with back spasms. The Vikings have said the injury is not serious, but he looks to be in serious doubt for Week 1. Joe Berger would start if Sullivan cannot play.

Vikings C John Sullivan has been sidelined the last two weeks with back spasms.

The injury was not thought to be serious, but he now appears in danger of missing the regular season opener. He will definitely miss the fifth preseason game. Joe Berger has started the last two games in Sullivan's place.

Vikings signed C John Sullivan to a one-year extension through 2017.

Sullivan was set to make $4.65 million in both 2015 and 2016 before his contract expired. Now he'll get base salaries of $7 million in 2015, $5.5 million in 2016 and $5.5 million in 2017. It's a well-deserved raise for the 29-year-old Sullivan, who has been one of the game's top centers since turning his career around in 2011.

His status is uncertain for Week 12 against Green Bay, but the Vikings really need him against B.J. Raji & Co. Sullivan has graded out as a top-11 center in Pro Football Focus' 2013 ratings. He finished last season No. 1 overall.

Vikings C John Sullivan (microfracture surgery) is full go for training camp.

"(I'm) out on the field, I'm practicing, I'm playing at a hundred percent and I feel great," Sullivan said Tuesday. Microfracture is serious business, but Sullivan is confident his knee won't be an issue. "Everybody associates (microfracture) with a lot of horror stories," Sullivan said. "The thinking is a little bit outdated. It's still obviously a serious surgery, but that stuff progresses fast." Sullivan graded out at Pro Football Focus' No. 1 center last season, playing an integral role in Adrian Peterson's monumental campaign.
