The Cleveland Plain Dealer doesn't expect the Browns to re-sign free agent NT Ahtyba Rubin.
Rubin was a major part of Cleveland's league-worst run defense last season. He also struggled to stay healthy, missing three games to ankle injuries. Rubin is unlikely to find guaranteed money beyond 2015 on the open market. Feb 21 - 8:31 PM

Browns NT Ahtyba Rubin (ankle) is listed as probable for Week 8.

The Browns previously feared Rubin might need year-ending ankle surgery, but he practiced on a limited basis this week and will give it a go Sunday versus the Raiders. The Browns are still without LE Phil Taylor (knee scope).

Browns DL Ahtyba Rubin may need surgery on his ankle.

Rubin went down during a practice two weeks ago and has gone for a second opinion. It's another starter down on a defensive line struggling badly to stop the run. Phil Taylor (knee) is not expected back for Sunday's game against the Raiders.

After meeting with Browns officials at the Combine, the agent for LE Ahtyba Rubin is confident the team will retain Rubin at his current salary.

After an up-and-down 2013 campaign, Rubin is owed a $6.6 million base salary and $300,000 workout bonus. "They're happy to have him on team, no changes to his salary," agent Alan Herman told the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Rubin turns 28 in July. The Browns don't necessarily need cap room -- they're $56.9 million under -- but could lower Rubin's figure by signing him to a long-term extension.

Profootballtalk reports the Browns may release DL Ahtyba Rubin.

Rubin, 28 in July, is entering the final year of a four-year, $27.6 million contract and carries an $8.175 million cap number. The Browns are already flush with cap space but are cleaning house. They can save $6.8 million against the cap by releasing Rubin, who started 14 games at left end last season and registered 52 tackles and two sacks. He had one of his better seasons under Rob Ryan in 2009. Ryan's now with the Saints, and they could use defensive line help.

Browns declared LE Ahtyba Rubin, QB Brian Hoyer, TE MarQueis Gray, OT Martin Wallace, RG Shawn Lauvao, DE Armonty Bryant and LB Paul Hazel inactive for Week 2 against the Ravens.

Billy Winn will start in Rubin's place, leaving a soft spot in the Browns' otherwise strong front seven.

Browns LE Ahtyba Rubin (calf) is not expected to play in Sunday's game against the Ravens.

It's a little boost for Ray Rice and the Ravens running game. Perhaps the only crack in the Browns' dominant front seven is now at left end, where Billy Winn is filling in for Rubin.

Browns declared LE Ahtyba Rubin (calf) inactive for Sunday's game against the Dolphins.

It's a major upgrade for Lamar Miller and the Dolphins running game. Rubin hurt the calf during Friday's practice, leaving Billy Winn as the starter at left end. The Browns will have starting right corner Buster Skrine (shoulder). Their inactives: QB Brian Hoyer, TE MarQueis Gray, OLB Barkevious Mingo, OT Martin Wallace, G Shawn Lauvao and LB Paul Hazel.

Browns LE Ahtyba Rubin (calf) is not expected to play on Sunday versus Miami.

Rubin is listed as questionable on the injury report after injuring the calf in Friday's practice. It's a big loss for the Cleveland defense. John Hughes and Billy Winn will fill in next to NT Phil Taylor and opposite RE Desmond Bryant. Upgrade Dolphins RB Lamar Miller slightly. He's a middling RB2.

The Browns added LE Ahtyba Rubin to their injury report after he missed Friday's practice with a calf injury.

He's listed as questionable. Rubin missed time with a calf injury last season, as well. A 6-foot-2, 330-pound run clogger, Rubin's absence could give Dolphins RB Lamar Miller a few more running lanes in Sunday's opener.

The Browns are expected to rotate Ahtyba Rubin and Phil Taylor between nose tackle and left end.

Desmond Bryant is locked in at right end. Rubin (6'2/330) and Taylor (6'3/335) both possess nose tackle-type size and are light on their feet. DC Ray Horton could flip them back and forth ala Ryan Pickett and B.J. Raji in Green Bay. "We’re not necessarily going to pigeonhole people," Horton said. "We can mix and match." Cleveland's front seven will be much improved in 2013.

Browns DL Ahtyba Rubin has shed weight in anticipation of his new role at defensive end.

A nose tackle throughout his career, Rubin will primarily be used at left defensive end in the Browns' new 3-4 scheme while seeing spot duty behind Phil Taylor at the nose. He's slimmed down to 306 pounds in an effort to improve as a pass-rusher after playing around 320 in 2012. There have been whispers that Rubin may be available for trade due to being a poor fit in the new defense.

The Browns are expected to use Ahtyba Rubin at defensive end in Ray Horton's new 3-4 defense, with Phil Taylor at nose tackle.

Rubin will likely play left end with Desmond Bryant at right end. With a healthy Taylor and Rubin complemented by Bryant, and Paul Kruger signed to play rush linebacker, Cleveland's front seven may be the most improved in the league.

Browns DT Ahtyba Rubin (calf) practiced on a limited basis this week and is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Cowboys.

Rubin missed the last three weeks with a calf injury and is expected to return Sunday. It will be the first time both Rubin and Phil Taylor (pectoral) will be active for the Browns this season.

Browns DT Ahtyba Rubin (calf) has resumed practicing.

Rubin has missed three of the past four games, but says he's feeling good as the Browns come out of their bye. With Phil Taylor (pectoral) also healthy now, the interior of the Browns' defense has a chance to be special. Both defensive tackles excel in run defense.
