Mundy would be an option for New York's third safety role behind Stevie Brown and Antrel Rolle. Incumbent third safety Kenny Phillips is not expected back.

Mundy is a quality run-support safety and special teamer, but there is a noticeable drop-off in coverage whenever he's forced to make spot starts. He'll return as the Steelers' third safety behind Ryan Clark and Troy Polamalu.

Troy Polamalu's backup notched 37 tackles and one interception in 2011. He has appeared in all 16 games each of the past three seasons.

Steelers SS Ryan Mundy was shaken up in the fourth quarter of Thursday's game.

He was starting in place of Troy Polamalu, so Will Allen has been moved to strong safety. Mundy's injury details aren't clear just yet.

Ryan Mundy is expected to start if Troy Polamalu (doubtful, ankle) does not play in Week 15.

Mundy was a sixth-round pick in 2008 who has seen time in 29 games over the past two seasons but has yet to register a start. Lawrence Timmons is expected to be counted on as the defensive anchor if Polamalu sits.

Steelers signed sixth-round S Ryan Mundy to a three-year contract. The deal includes a $67,600 signing bonus.

We were secretly hoping that Mundy wouldn't sign until Monday so we could make an Office Space joke, but it's probably better that he didn't. The West Virginia product is unlikely to be more than a special teamer in the NFL.
