Bengals signed RB James Johnson, formerly of the Vikings.

Brian Leonard and rookie Cordera Eason came up injured Sunday night and may be lost for the season. Johnson spent the majority of the 2008-09 seasons on the Bengals' practice squad, so he's familiar with Bob Bratkowski's offense. If Leonard is truly done for the year, it will be interesting to see if the Bengals contact Brian Westbrook as a potential third-down back.

Johnson was on the Vikings' practice squad last year, but couldn't bypass Darius Reynaud behind Adrian Peterson, Toby Gerhart, and Albert Young.

Bengals signed RB James Johnson, DT Clinton McDonald, TE Darius Hill, WR Maurice Purify, S Corey Lynch, FB Chris Pressley, OG Jason Shirley, and LB Dan Skuta to their practice squad.

Shirley is the ideal practice squad guy. The converted defensive tackle has a lot of power in the running game, but is still learning the position. They went with the undrafted Pressley over Fui Vakapuna, a seventh-round pick.

Bengals released RB James Johnson.

Even though he saw some action behind Cedric Benson late last season, Johnson was never in the discussion. Both Brian Leonard and DeDe Dorsey made the team.

James Johnson (3 catches, 27 yards) was the Bengals leading receiver against the Browns in Week 16. He also carried three times for 10 yards.

Johnson caught a few balls out of the backfield, but it was pretty much the Cedric Benson show. Still, Johnson looked good in his brief action and could battle for a backup spot next season.

Bengals promoted RB James Johnson from their practice squad.

Expectations for Johnson should be low, as he doesn't run particularly well and is fourth on the depth chart behind Cedric Benson, Chris Perry, and Kenny Watson. He might be incorporated into the third-down offense in the last four games and will have a chance to audition for a 2009 roster spot.

Johnson will essentially serve as Cincy's fourth back behind Chris Perry, Kenny Watson, and DeDe Dorsey to start out. Both wideouts are projects.

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis mentioned undrafted rookie James Johnson as one of the most impressive players at their recent minicamp.

Lewis usually doesn't single out players by name, but praised Johnson and receiver Marcus Maxwell. Johnson went to Kansas State. While a little presser love may not mean much, he could be in the mix for a roster spot. Especially if DeDe Dorsey can't get healthy.
