Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland confirmed Dan Carpenter and fifth-round pick Caleb Sturgis will be in a training camp battle at kicker.
Sturgis is the heavy favorite because teams don't draft kickers they're not planning to keep. Ireland anticipates a "pretty good competition in camp and we look forward to that." Carpenter went 22-of-27 on field-goal attempts in 2012. Apr 29 - 12:12 PM

Per the Palm Beach Post, Dolphins K Dan Carpenter's roster spot is "at risk."

Carpenter, 27, made 22-of-27 field goals last season, but a couple of the missed attempts led to losses. The Dolphins are reportedly "high" on two draft-eligible kickers in Florida's Caleb Sturgis and Florida State's Dustin Hopkins. The Dolphins could save $3 million against the cap by cutting Carpenter.

The Dolphins are leaning toward adding another kicker to compete with Dan Carpenter.

Carpenter is owed $2.7 million, pricey for a kicker who's missed at least five field goals in each of the past three seasons. Cutting him would create $2 million-plus in cap space. Restructuring Carpenter’s contract is another option. The only kickers who presently have a higher salary are Oakland’s Sebastian Janikowski ($3.8 million) and San Francisco’s David Akers ($3 million).

Dolphins placed K Dan Carpenter (groin) on injured reserve, ending his season.

It's the second straight season that Carpenter has been hampered by a groin injury. He's converted 22-of-27 (81.5 percent) field goals this season, right in line with his career mark of 81.9 percent. Carpenter enters the final year of a four-year, $8 million contract in 2013.

Dolphins K Dan Carpenter (groin) was limited in practice on Thursday.

A Thursday morning report said Carpenter was ready to resume kicking, so it's likely he's just being eased back in after sitting out the past two weeks. Fill-in Shayne Graham was waived Wednesday, so the odds Carpenter are not active this weekend are low.

Dan Carpenter (groin) is ready to resume kicking duties.

Carpenter missed the last two games after pulling his groin in a practice. He was 18-of-22 on field goals in nine games prior to going down.

Dolphins declared K Dan Carpenter (groin) inactive for Thursday's game against the Cowboys.

Shayne Graham will handle kicking duties once again. Otherwise, the red-hot Dolphins are healthy. Their inactives: RB Steve Slaton, TE Will Yeatman, T Will Barker, G John Jerry, DE Igor Olshansky and LB Ikaika Alama-Francis.

Dolphins K Dan Carpenter (groin) did not make the team's trip to Dallas, and will be out for Week 12.

Shayne Graham will handle kicking duties for the second straight week. If for some reason you held onto Carpenter during his Week 11 absence, it's time to move on and put his roster spot to better use.

Dolphins K Dan Carpenter (groin) was held out of practice on Tuesday.

He's not a good bet to recuperate in time for Thursday's game. Expect veteran Shayne Graham to handle kicking chores against the Cowboys.

Dolphins declared K Dan Carpenter (groin) inactive for Sunday's game against the Bills.

Shayne Graham will handle kicking duties for Miami today, but isn't a real fantasy option. Otherwise, the Dolphins are among the healthier teams in the league. Their other inactives: RB Steve Slaton, TE Will Yeatman, T Will Barker, C Ryan Cook, DE Tony McDaniel and LB Ikaika Alama-Francis.

Dolphins K Dan Carpenter (groin) has been downgraded to out for Week 11.

His Saturday morning workout did not go well. ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Dolphins will sign former Patriots and Bengals kicker Shayne Graham to kick against the Bills. You should be able to do better for a fill-in in fantasy leagues.

The Dolphins will work out K Dan Carpenter (groin, questionable) on Saturday to determine whether they need to sign a new kicker.

The Fins lined up alternatives in Jeff Reed, Shayne Graham, and Rhys Lloyd during an open tryout Friday. They'll probably sign one of the above if Carpenter doesn't look healthy Sunday. We will have another update tomorrow.

Dolphins K Dan Carpenter (groin) is listed as questionable for Week 11.

The Fins held an open kicker tryout on Friday, hinting at concern over Carpenter's availability for Sunday's matchup with the Bills. We'll know Carpenter won't be kicking if Miami signs another placekicker before game day.

The Dolphins are reportedly working out free agent kickers Jeff Reed, Shayne Graham and Rhys Lloyd on Friday.

Dan Carpenter isn't listed on the injury report, but the Dolphins must be worried about his availability for Week 11 to be auditioning kickers so late in the week. Carpenter isn't much of a fantasy option regardless.

Winds of 20-25 MPH are expected in Miami when the Lions take on the Dolphins on Sunday Week 16.

Although the Lions theoretically present a favorable matchup for opposing kickers, Carpenter, a Pro Bowl candidate who is tied for second in the NFL in field goals made (28), should probably be benched in favor of someone kicking in more hospitable conditions.
