Panthers placed RB Mike Tolbert (leg) on injured reserve with a designation to return.
It means Tolbert is out until at least Week 13, and leaves the Panthers very thin at running back. DeAngelo Williams (hamstring) is on track to play in Week 4, but Jonathan Stewart (knee) is out and Fozzy Whittaker (quad) is in doubt. If DeAngelo can suit up anywhere near 100 percent, he'll be a good bet for 15-20 touches against the Ravens in Week 4. He'll also get more goal-line chances with Tolbert out and Cam Newton (ribs) hesitant to run. Sep 23 - 12:16 PM

The Charlotte Observer reports Mike Tolbert could miss "more than a month" with a hairline fracture in his left leg.

He also has a bone bruise. The injuries put UDFA Darrin Reaves on the fantasy radar with Jonathan Stewart also in danger of missing multiple weeks, and DeAngelo Williams short of 100 percent. Tolbert can be safely dropped in any leagues where he was owned. He might eventually become an I.R. candidate.
Sep 22 - 4:17 PM

Panthers RB Mike Tolbert has been diagnosed with a "hairline fracture" in his leg, and ruled out for Week 4.

He's week to week. Tolbert took a big hit late in Sunday's loss, but it was unclear how serious it was since the game was almost over. With Jonathan Stewart battling a "severely" sprained knee, DeAngelo Williams could have the Panthers' backfield all to himself for Week 4 if he can get over his thigh injury. If not, the Panthers will be down to Fozzy Whittaker (quad) and Darrin Reaves. It's a big concern for a banged up Cam Newton.

Jonathan Stewart and Mike Tolbert will both have MRIs Monday.

The Panthers aren't revealing any information yet, but both looked like knee issues on Sunday night. Neither injury appeared overly serious, but the MRI could very well find sprains. DeAngelo Williams (thigh) would get a boost in Week 4 if both Stewart and Tolbert sit.

Mike Tolbert rushed three times for four yards in Sunday night's Week 3 loss to the Steelers

Tolbert took over lead-back duties after Jonathan Stewart left in the fourth quarter with a knee injury. He secured all three of his targets in the pass game for 20 yards. Tolbert also briefly exited with knee issue, but it didn't appear to be a major concern. With DeAngelo Williams expected to return next week, Tolbert isn't on the fantasy radar.
Sep 22 - 12:52 AM

Mike Tolbert (chest) practiced again on Friday and is probable for Week 3 versus Pittsburgh.

Tolbert took what he called the hardest hit of his career from DT Nick Fairley. He had trouble breathing and will wear extra padding against the Steelers. Jonathan Stewart could see extra looks in the red zone with Tolbert not at 100 percent. Both would be desperation plays with DeAngelo Williams (thigh) back.
Sep 19 - 11:48 AM

Mike Tolbert (chest) returned to Panthers practice Thursday, getting in a limited session.

It puts Tolbert on track to operate as a Week 3 battering ram, though how he feels on Friday will be key. With DeAngelo Williams (thigh) trending toward a return, as well, Tolbert's status is less important than it was in Week 2.
Sep 18 - 7:57 PM

Mike Tolbert (chest) is not practicing Wednesday.

Tolbert is day to day after suffering a chest injury in Sunday's win. The Panthers are hoping he can return to practice later this week.
Sep 17 - 1:15 PM

Mike Tolbert (chest) could miss practice time this week.

Tolbert suffered a bruised sternum on a goal-line carry. He should be considered day to day. With DeAngelo Williams and Fozzy Whittaker also dealing with injuries, Jonathan Stewart is the Panthers' only healthy running back.
Sep 16 - 11:29 AM

Mike Tolbert was thrown for -5 yards on four carries and caught three passes for 33 yards in the Panthers' Week 2 win over the Lions.

The Lions' defensive front lived in the Panthers' backfield in this one, and Jonathan Stewart got the nod ahead of Tolbert in a fourth-quarter scoring situation, with Stewart powering in from two yards out. Tolbert now has 16 touches through two games. With DeAngelo Williams (thigh) likely to return sooner rather than later, it's hard to get behind Tolbert having any fantasy value.
Sep 14 - 5:51 PM

Mike Tolbert managed 11 yards on seven carries and caught 2-of-4 targets for six yards in the Panthers' Week 1 win over the Bucs.

A plodding ball carrier with some power and receiving skills, Tolbert was used to kill the clock against Tampa Bay. He's more of a drain on DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart's fantasy value than a standalone option. Tolbert remained involved in red-zone packages and will score touchdowns in some weeks, but they'll be impossible to predict. Tolbert is not really even an RB4.
Sep 7 - 7:27 PM

Coach Ron Rivera hinted that Mike Tolbert will remain the Panthers goal-line back.

Rivera alluded to the goal-line role when discussing the 13 pounds Tolbert lost this offseason. "We don't want him to lose that nose for the goal line that he has. A lot of times he's our fourth-down, go-to guy. He's our crunch-time guy," Rivera said. Tolbert had five rushing TDs on 101 carries last season while DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart combined for three rushing scores on 249 attempts. Add in Cam Newton's goal-line leaping ability, and the scoring upside of Williams and Stewart is capped.
Jul 28 - 12:21 PM

Mike Tolbert rushed eight times for 20 yards in Carolina's postseason loss to San Francisco.

Tolbert handled two first-half goal-line carries but was stopped cold each time, initially by ILB Patrick Willis and later by OLB Ahmad Brooks. With Jonathan Stewart (knee) inactive, Tolbert surprisingly led Carolina in carries, with eight to DeAngelo Williams' five. As injury-ruined Stewart is owed a massive offseason roster bonus, Tolbert has a chance to return as Carolina's clear No. 2 back in 2014, behind Williams. At some point, however, the Panthers are going to have to inject their backfield with younger legs.
Jan 12 - 4:23 PM

Mike Tolbert rushed seven times for 29 yards and caught three passes for 10 yards in Sunday's Week 17 win at Atlanta.

Tolbert had one signature play as he burst into the secondary and absolutely trucked William Moore as he carried defenders to the 5-yard line. Other than that, he was quiet again despite the absence of Jonathan Stewart. Tolbert's second season in Carolina ends with 101 carries for 361 yards and five touchdowns in addition to 27 catches for 184 yards and two more scores. He never had more than 48 rushing yards or 41 receiving yards in a single game all year, burying owners when he didn't find the end zone.

Mike Tolbert rushed once for one yard in Carolina's Week 16 win over the Saints, adding two catches for five yards.

One of fantasy's most touchdown-reliant options, Tolbert was a total non-factor on a day where the Panthers offense could get nothing going, either before or after monsoon-like conditions settled over Charlotte. Tolbert has scored once in his past seven games.
