The Bills' official website didn't include Mike Tolbert when breaking down the backfield behind LeSean McCoy.
ESPN Bills reporter Mike Rodak mentioned Tolbert as a candidate for No. 2 duties in mid-June, but the Bills' own site isn't lumping him in with Jonathan Williams, Cedric O'Neal and Joe Banyard behind Shady. The site admits Williams is "most likely" to earn the backup job. Ace Bills reporter Joe Buscaglia has called Tolbert "more of a pass-blocking option on third downs." Jul 8 - 9:55 AM

WKBW Buffalo's Joe Buscaglia calls FB/RB Mike Tolbert "more of a pass-blocking option on third downs."

Buscaglia seems to disagree with ESPN Bills reporter Mike Rodak, who previously suggested Tolbert as an option to back up LeSean McCoy. Buscaglia sees Jonathan Williams as the favorite for the No. 2 tailback role, with Cedric O'Neal, Joe Banyard, and UDFA Jordan Johnson rounding out the depth chart.

ESPN's Mike Rodak believes Mike Tolbert could emerge as the Bills' No. 2 running back.

Per Rodak, Tolbert has received a "heavy dose" of work in spring practices. Sophomore Jonathan Williams is the favorite to replace Mike Gillislee behind LeSean McCoy, but has hardly clinched the job. Tolbert played for coach Sean McDermott in Carolina. Even were Tolbert to earn No. 2 duties, he would not take over as a bell-cow in the event of a Shady injury.

The Buffalo News says "there's no guarantee" Mike Tolbert makes the 53-man roster.

Tolbert was a surprise signing after the Bills made Patrick DiMarco the second-highest paid fullback. He's expected to see time as a short-yardage specialist but will likely have to beat out Jonathan Williams for a roster spot. Tolbert's one-year deal is for the veteran minimum.
Mar 11 - 3:14 PM

Bills agreed to terms with FB Mike Tolbert, formerly of the Panthers.

It's a one-year, $1 million deal. It makes little sense on a day where the Bills already signed Patrick DiMarco, but ESPN's Jordan Raanan reports Tolbert is coming aboard as a running back. Whatever his position is listed as, it's a puzzling move. The Bills must view Tolbert as a battering ram behind LeSean McCoy, who has had struggles at the goal line. Tolbert played for new coach Sean McDermott in Carolina.
Mar 8 - 4:40 PM

Panthers released FB Mike Tolbert.

The move frees up $1.725 million in cap space. Tolbert earned three Pro Bowl nods in five seasons with Carolina. Fullbacks are a dying breed in the NFL, but Tolbert should land on his feet. The 31-year-old logged 114 rushing yards on 35 carries last year, adding 10 catches for 72 yards and one touchdown.
Feb 21 - 1:32 PM

Mike Tolbert rushed two times for 13 yards and caught 3-of-3 targets for 28 yards and one touchdown in the Panthers' Week 15 win over the Redskins.

His one-yard touchdown grab at the start of the third quarter after a Kirk Cousins lost fumble was Tolbert's first end-zone visit of the season. Tolbert entered the night with just 118 total yards on offense.

Mike Tolbert (hamstring) is questionable for Week 5 against the Bucs.

Tolbert was limited in practice all week. Coach Ron Rivera expects him to play through his hamstring issue. Tolbert is a distant third for carries behind Cameron Artis-Payne and Fozzy Whittaker.

Mike Tolbert touched the ball four times for 19 yards in the Panthers' Week 3 loss to the Vikings.

Even with Jonathan Stewart sidelined, Tolbert wasn't a factor. He was a distant No. 3 behind Cameron Artis-Payne and Fozzy Whittaker. Tolbert will be off the Week 4 radar.

Panthers re-signed FB Mike Tolbert to a two-year contract worth a maximum of $4 million.

The "Tub of Goo" is back for another run at the Super Bowl. Tolbert is a glue guy for the Panthers as a veteran leader and strong locker room presence. He's found the end zone 18 times since joining Carolina in 2012.

The Panthers have "been in discussions" with free agent FB Mike Tolbert about a new deal.

A Panther since 2012, Tolbert has scored 18 touchdowns the past four seasons working primarily as a red-zone specialist. Tolbert's lead blocking has fallen off, but he remains a useful pass protector on obvious passing downs.

Impending free agent FB Mike Tolbert said he wants to remain with the Panthers.

He has yet to talk with the front office. With Tolbert unlikely to break the bank, it makes sense for Carolina to re-sign the versatile fullback. Tolbert earned First-Team All-Pro honors for the second time in his career in 2015.

Mike Tolbert rushed five times for 18 yards and missed his lone target in the Panthers' Super Bowl loss to Denver.

Tolbert's lowlight occurred on a short second-quarter run, at the end of which Broncos FS Darian Stewart helmeted the ball loose and ILB Danny Trevathan recovered for a Denver turnover. A 2015 Pro Bowl selection, Tolbert is headed into free agency at age 30. We suspect he'll return to the Panthers on a cost-effective short-term deal.
Sun, Feb 7, 2016 10:56:00 PM

Impending free agent Mike Tolbert said he "absolutely" wants to re-sign with the Panthers.

Tolbert should become the league's highest paid fullback after making the Pro Bowl two of the last three seasons. 30-year-old Tolbert will be seeking Marcel Reece money (four years, $14M).
Wed, Feb 3, 2016 07:20:00 PM

Mike Tolbert rushed three times for four yards and caught his lone target for a gain of 14 in the Panthers' NFC title game win over the Cardinals.

Tolbert received a second-quarter goal-line carry, but was stuffed at the line. Tolbert kept the chains moving in the third quarter, picking up 14 yards on an arrow route out of the backfield deep in Arizona territory. Tolbert's other two runs occurred in clock-killing mode of the Panthers' blowout win. He contributed a two-point conversion to put Carolina up 42-15 in the fourth frame.
