The Chargers are expected to start newly-signed LB Gary Guyton this week against the Panthers.
With Donald Butler (groin) and Demorrio Willians (ankle) both sidelined, Guyton will be forced to start at weakside linebacker despite having not appeared in a game this season. His starting role doesn't figure to last more than one week. Bront Bird and Andrew Gachkar will be limited to special teams. Sat, Dec 15, 2012 07:18:00 PM

Chargers signed LB Gary Guyton.

Guyton has bounced around with the Dolphins and Cowboys since the Patriots let him walk as a free agent after last season. He did make 32 starts for the Pats between 2008 and 2011. Guyton will be insurance in case Donald Butler (groin) and Demorrio Williams (ankle) can't go against the Panthers this week.

Cowboys release LB Gary Guyton and sign CB Vince Agnew off their practice squad.

This is a depth move with Mike Jenkins (back) questionable for the Cowboys Week 10 tilt against the Eagles. Guyton had been with the team for just three days.

Cowboys agreed to terms with LB Gary Guyton.

With Dan Connor (stinger) and Orie Lemon (hamstring) in question for Week 10, the Cowboys have no depth behind Bruce Carter, Ernie Sims and special teamer Alex Albright. Guyton started 32 games for the Patriots from 2008-2011.

Dolphins released LB Gary Guyton.

It's a "mild shocker," per beat writer Ben Volin, as the Fins are swallowing a $45,000 signing bonus. Guyton is a backup-caliber talent, but the Dolphins are leaving themselves thin at linebacker. Jason Trusnik, Austin Spitler and rookie Josh Kaddu are the reserves behind starters Kevin Burnett, Karlos Dansby and Koa Misi.

Dolphins agreed to terms with LB Gary Guyton, formerly of the Patriots.

Guyton, 26, is known as a coverage-specialist linebacker, but struggled in that role with New England last season. He'll likely be a backup option on the weak side in Miami. The Dolphins' linebacker pursuit shouldn't end here.

The Patriots are not expected to re-sign free agent LB Gary Guyton.

Guyton saw his playing time decrease each of the past two years after starting all 16 games in 2009, but did notch 47 tackles while making eight starts in 2011. More of a coverage specialist than run stopper, Guyton won't be landing a starting job on the open market.

Free agent LB Gary Guyton is expected to visit the Dolphins in the "coming days."

It's the first reported visit for Guyton, a 32-game starter in New England over the past four seasons. He would be a backup and special teamer in Miami.

Gary Guyton is expected to fill in at weak-side linebacker for Jerod Mayo (knee).

Mayo's MCL injury could cost him six weeks. In the meantime, Guyton will be an every-down 'backer and possible IDP asset. Guyton started 16 games in 2009, racking up 85 tackles and three passes defensed. Keep in mind that middle linebacker Brandon Spikes could also see an increase in snaps. Spikes is much better versus the run than Guyton, and may quietly be the better IDP pickup.

Updating a previous item, Gary Guyton is running as the third-team middle linebacker for the Patriots.

Brandon Spikes is the starter in the base 4-3. Dane Fletcher is second team, and Guyton is with the threes. The starting strong-side linebacker is Rob Ninkovich, with Jerod Mayo on the weak side. It's unclear if Spikes will be a three-down linebacker. Guyton is regarded as a coverage linebacker, though being so low on the depth chart suggests he's on the roster bubble.

Gary Guyton is playing middle linebacker in the Patriots' new 4-3 defense.

Jerod Mayo is roaming around with increased pass-rushing responsibilities, but he's a weak-side 'backer in the base defense. Guyton can run sideline to sideline and cover, so he's somewhat appealing from an IDP perspective. Mayo is still the player to target here. Brandon Spikes is now the Sam linebacker.

Patriots signed LB Gary Guyton to a two-year contract extension.

Guyton, an exclusive rights free agent this offseason, will receive a $650,000 signing bonus and $1.505 million in base salaries the next two years. He'll have to battle rookie Brandon Spikes this summer for the starting job next Jerod Mayo.

Patriots extended an offer to exclusive rights free agents LB Gary Guyton and S Bret Lockett.

Guyton served as a fill-in for Jerod Mayo last season, becoming a valuable reserve linebacker for the Patriots. He'll return in the same role in 2010 at a $470,000 salary. Lockett was merely a special teamer in 2009.

Gary Guyton played 874 snaps in 2009 after seeing just 307 snaps as a rookie in 2008.

Guyton, an undrafted free agent out of Georgia Tech, has become a valuable player to the Pats. He stepped in nicely at middle linebacker when Jerod Mayo was out and even served as the defense's primary play-caller. Guyton, an exclusive rights free agent, will be back with the Pats next season.

Second-year LB Gary Guyton will be the Patriots' signal caller on defense until Jerod Mayo (knee) rejoins the lineup.

This means he'll be an every-down player. Guyton is also likely to start at middle linebacker, with the Pats keeping Adalius Thomas on the strong side. It's unclear who will start on the weak side. Guyton, the fastest linebacker at the 2008 Combine, is a terrific IDP pickup. He won't come off the field.
