New Rams LBs coach Frank Bush talked up WLB Jo-Lonn Dunbar after watching St. Louis' 2012 game tapes.
Although Dunbar is a liability in coverage, he showed playmaking ability in 2012 and is one of two starting linebackers, along with MLB James Laurinaitis, on whom the Rams can count for 2013. "He was a surprise," Bush said of Dunbar. "After going back watching the tape, Jo-Lonn did a good job. He flashed a lot. He was physical. Had a little surliness to him, which I kind of like." The St. Louis Post-Dispatch projects Jo-Lonn Dunbar as the Rams' starting weak-side linebacker.

There's a long way to go, of course, but the too-early depth chart has Dunbar at weak side and Mario Haggan at strong-side linebacker. Rookies Aaron and Sammy Brown, and Alex Hoffman-Ellis will be vying for backup roles with Justin Cole and Josh Hull. Dunbar could be a sneaky late pick in IDP leagues.

Rams LB Jo-Lonn Dunbar says he's open to playing any linebacker position in St. Louis.

"I'm just here to play ball," he said. "Whatever they need me to do, I'm ready to do. I'm familiar with all three linebacker positions." Dunbar was mostly a versatile reserve in New Orleans, but should primarily man the strong side in St. Louis with James Laurinaitis entrenched in the middle.

Rams agreed to terms with LB Jo-Lonn Dunbar, formerly of the Saints.

Dunbar, 27, has experience starting both at strong-side linebacker and middle linebacker, and knows the new Rams defensive scheme after spending the past several seasons playing for Gregg Williams. Dunbar is undersized at 6-foot, 226, and lacks elite talent. He'll likely be the Rams' starting "Sam" 'backer in 2012, although St. Louis shouldn't expect a difference maker.

The Rams will host free agent LB Jo-Lonn Dunbar on Thursday.

St. Louis lost defensive coordinator Gregg Williams to an indefinite suspension, but it hasn't stopped pursuing his former players. Dunbar can play middle and strong-side linebacker. He started 14 games for New Orleans last season.

Free agent LB Jo-Lonn Dunbar is expected to be a "priority" for the Saints.

Dunbar is coming off a breakout season, including outplaying Jonathan Vilma while filling in at middle linebacker for a stretch. The Saints may indeed choose to ditch Vilma and re-sign Dunbar as the "mike" starter.

Saints MLB JoLonn Dunbar earned his second game ball of the year for his performance in Week 12.

Dunbar racked up 10 tackles with a forced fumble against the Giants. The Saints defense hasn't missed a beat with Jonathan Vilma (knee) out of the lineup. In fact, Dunbar has been an upgrade. He's expected to move back to the strong side in the next week or two, with Vilma due to return.

With Jonathan Vilma (knee) inactive for Week 9, the Saints are expected to start Jo-Lonn Dunbar at middle linebacker against the Bucs.

Scott Shanle will man the strong side with Jonathan Casillas at weak-side 'backer. Dunbar has seven starts this year, but only 35 tackles. Playing middle linebacker, however, makes him a sleeper candidate for 10-plus stops today.

Saints agreed to terms with OLB JoLonn Dunbar.

The Saints have signed Will Herring, but they appear to be ticketing him for strictly special teams. Dunbar will likely compete with third-rounder Martez Wilson for the starting job on the strong side. As a replacement-level player, Dunbar shouldn't keep the position for long even if he starts in Week 1.

Jo-Lonn Dunbar is working as the Saints' first-team strong-side linebacker during Organized Team Activities.

Dunbar isn't on the IDP radar, but New Orleans' weaknesses at both outside positions could benefit MLB Jonathan Vilma's tackle numbers. Dunbar is barely a replacement-level player and weak-side starter Scott Shanle is in decline. Vilma will beat both to the ball and should be a top-five LB target.

Saints placed OLB JoLonn Dunbar (hamstring) on injured reserve, ending his season.

This loss is quietly significant because Dunbar's been starting at strong-side linebacker in place of Scott Fujita (knee surgery, staph infection). A former undrafted free agent from Boston College, Dunbar's year ends after he made 20 tackles in nine games. He'll battle for a roster spot in 2010.

JoLonn Dunbar started in place of OLB Scott Fujita (calf) in Monday night's win over the Falcons.

It was Dunbar's first start of the season and he finished with three tackles. We're just guessing, but Fujita will probably be ready to take back his spot on the strong side for this week's game against the Panthers.
